Octopuses/Octopi are Ridiculous

The way these things change color and texture is crazy.

they really are amazing. they can also mimic behaviors like crazy. like they can wave around like a piece of sea grass would. cool stuff

They do it by contracting the muscles that shrink or enlarge pigment cells. It's pretty gnarly shit.

That's gotta be fake. If you watch after it completely disappears, there are like plants all over it and shit and then they are just gone.

looking at taht again, it's so baller. it's like a movie angle.

the octopus appears right next to the camera, kinda looks like hes looking at it, then pretty much just goes "lets roll out" and shoots off. that octopus is my new best friend.

They are crazy as hell, I've caught and tried to catch a few and they always go nuts, when (if, they are tasty) you throw them back in it's like they disappear when they hit the bottom.

if you look at its head, right before it goes invisible it gets algae all around the perimeter of it. It's possible that it just reshaped its muscles into that, since they have no bones its possible. I'm still skeptical though.

octopi(?) can also fit into anything as long as its bigger than their beak.

like squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter

it wouldnt need to form the shape of the algae, it would just have to mimic the subtle shading of the actual algae to make the pattern it creates appear three dimensional.

it's the same concept as drawing something to look three dimensional on a two dimensional piece of paper, just executed at an amazing level.

I realize what they can do, however, there is clearly 3 dimensions on this one which causes me to be skeptical. It appears doctored compared to many of the other videos I've watched.

I took this screenshot to show where there is 3 dimensional growth on the octopus. It seems very unlikely it would mimic its structure to that extent.

and estcst101, get off my back. I'm very well aware of the camouflaging capabilities of cephalopods. If you look up other videos none of them are nearly to the point of this one.

those little stub things that appear to be coming from the octopus in the picture are actually behind it, part of the plant. watch the video again carefully and pay close attention, you will see that those stubs dont move with the octopus

the octapus species are predicted to be the dominat species on earth if all large land animals are killed in a mass destruction kind of armagaggedon thing. They will be the first to sprout legs and start walking, plus they are really smart. They will look like the simpsons aliens I bet.

that first clip is my dad's! he's a marine biologist and he took that shot in cayman a few years back. he studies the camo of octopus and cuttlefish.. and i help him edit his shit because he uses an HVX200 now. in fact the first thing i helped him do was put a watermark on that exact clip because he makes thousands of dollars from that clip and he didnt want it ending up on places like ebaumsworld without any credit. but yeah its definitely real. crazy shit. haha he'd be excited to know a bunch of kids think its cool

eh not completely. they still dont know how the octopus/cuttlefish can match the background so well and so quick.. plus theyre colorblind

oh yeah and its "octopuses", not octopi. i always joke with my dad and "correct" him when he says octopuses

humans still havent been to the deepest parts of our oceans ON EARTH, and we have put billions of dollars on technologies to try and put people on a death trap of a rock that at its closest is 35 millions miles away and (with the current technologies) would take around 7 years to get to. Dont get me wrong, im all for space travel, just seems sorta wierd sometimes

When octopus evolve and can breath on land we would all be fucked, they'd be ambushing people all over the place. you'd think it was the plant in the parking lot one minute and its eating your face the next, scary

haha how often do you talk about them?

and they should do a Plant Earth show just on octopuses. That would be sick.

"cephalopods are the pinnacle of invertabrate evolution"- I saw a show on the discovery channel about squids and octopusses and cuttlefish and that quote sums up how freaking cool these animals are

the new octograb is the tits. u jump, do an octograb and then just fucking disappear into thin air, then morph to the landing of the jump while being all invisible and octopus like.

u have to be completely covered in octopuses tho so it's tricky.

hahaha wow this is funny because I just read a book on them today, totally out of the random.
