I think everyone agrees with the "movement" but most of us dont agree with how its happening. If you want to protest you need to do it in front of the people you are electing. Show them you are in their face and if they dont do what they promise when they are talking bullshit to get elected, it will be the last time they are in office.

This is the heart of it IMO.

I don't think most college grads (yes, even liberal arts students) have trouble getting employed. I think what people are protesting is the way large corporations and/or wall street have the power to undermine of democracy with money. Don't forget, our tax dollars paid for the huge bail out for those wall street assholes.
 
I didnt read anything posted in this thread because it is just like any other political thread on NS. With that i dont expect many people to read what i write, However, i feel i need to mention. THESE WERE CAMPUS POLICE PEPPER SPRAYING STUDENTS SITTING IN THE QUAD!!!!

That is what makes the actions of the officer incredibly wrong and the chancellor even worse for backing the officers excessive use of force.

I'm not diving into the argument regarding the use of pepperspray in any way, but what you said right there is undeniably b.s. If you were seeking solely to make people chuckle you would have never gotten on your soapbox to justify the actions of the officer to begin with.

You brought this multi-page "shit storm" as you call it, upon yourself. It's FAR from a shit storm as well. in terms of NS "debates", this one ranks as downright civil.
 
The protests aren't about freedom. It is the American idea of freedom (anti socialism) that got you all in this mess anyway. How about you all shut the fuck up because the cops are doing a lot more for society than the protesters are. The protesters do not offer solutions, and they WASTE TAX MONEY ON COPS WHO HAVE TO REMOVE THEM. If the majority of us don't agree with cops, that means that the majority of us wish we had criminals running rampant. Your society has agreed upon ideals that the police enforce.

This movement would be much more effective if it was a movement, not a sit on your ass (block of wall street for a daily parade from 8:30 till 10:00. It is legal and inconvenient for them) and if the protesters were intelligent enough to see that they look like idiots and their message is lost in the riot like protests and conflict.

however on the other hand, if my only purpose was to create a "shitstorm" i would have never bothered to post the pictures in the first place. i would have just said my peice and watched the chaos unfold.

The moment you interjected your opinion (See Original Post), this thread became a soapbox as opposed to a thread of clever and timely current events photoshops.

I still peg my B.S. meter at 'Very Strong' due to the fact that you aren't a spring chicken on NS. You've been around these parts long enough to know very well that stating opinions on current political events leads to shitstorms. It is highly improbable that you honestly thought that people would not focus on your opinion, and focus rather on the photoshops.

Don't act surprised when the fire gets larger when you throw gasoline on it.

The police broke the law. They should be forced to resign.

Should the debate go any deeper than that on this specific subject?
 
I find this thread fascinating. At first I was shocked by the images of the cop pepper spraying the protesters. I'm still not going to defend that, but it did get me thinking. The reason we came up with non lethal weapons was to avoid what happened at Kent State in the 70's. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Admittedly, I don't know what problems the protesters at UC Davis were causing. Pepper spray obviously wasn't the right solution in this case, but it was better than a bunch of cops approaching the crowd with assault rifles. Clearly we need to come up with new non lethal solutions like the sonic weapons that are supposed to make people sick to their stomachs without causing any physical damage. Sounds great if someone can get it to work right.

Ending serious thoughts on this matter and getting back to the more desirable aspects of this thread.

^ sonic weapons would have their problems too. I wouldn't be surprised if people starte saying it was a plot to get people to buy more peptol bismol. Also it is still a weapon and people will still consider it "assault". People will be unhappy with the police no matter what they do or don't do
 
the solution was simple, arrest them. you pepper spray a riot(or tear gas) because they're rowdy and out of control, not protesters. that's just ridiculous, and this isn't a question of following the law, they're protesters. therefore, their job is to stand their ground to make a difference, make voices heard and prove a point(though many of you question their opinions and methods, that is not currently up for debate). that guy is a fucking douche bag. in the end it doesn't matter who's right or wrong, this is a boundary that was unnecessarily over stepped.
