So i've been roughly following the Jumbo resort plans by the big O O and only just found out that it is 100% not happening, imo it would be cool to have a real year round resort in Canada but the negative environmental effects out-way the positive effects and there are tons of ski resorts in that area. But O O is involved with a new plan, Vale-mount Resort, and I haven't heard many people talk about it but it would be a really big year round resort 7 hours away from Calgary and 5 from Edmonton and 3 from Kamloops. I know tons of people who would drive a-lot more than that for some summer turns.

Does anyone have opinions, info, anything?
 
I think you'd be surprised how small the market is for year round skiing, you are blinded by your passion and the bias of the company you keep, I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happened at all, starting a new ski area in 2020 isnt exactly profiable.

Yeah I guess most skiers have snow out of their mind even before ski hills close normally and I agree that building a new resort isn't the best idea from a financial standpoint especially in current times.
 
can Oberto fuck off already...?

I’ve never been but from a quick google Valemount looks like a beautiful and minimally spoiled part of BC, if you wanna ski in the summer go to Whistler the infrastructures already there. Building another megaresort in 2020 is so wasteful, the world has plenty of them...

Doing some more research I think Valemount resort is another really stupid idea, like you said the world has many large resorts and there are tons nearby to the town Valemount, Marmot Basin is literally less than 2 hours away.

From a tourism standpoint I don't think it would really do much it would only just take customers away from other resorts/tourist attractions in the area and wouldn't bring anyone new to the area.

I haven't seen too many things about the environmental side but most of northern bc is pretty untouched and I am guessing many locals like it that way, I don't see people living in a small town 5 hours away from any population center wanting a huge whistler size resort in their backyard.
 
From what I know, Valemount makes a lot more sense than Jumbo ever did. Seems like Valemount locals are more supportive of the project too. Although, from talking to people in the area, they doubt it will ever go through.

Oberto is getting up there in years so who knows how far this push will get.

Personally, this has nothing to do with me but I'd definitely prefer it never comes to fruition.

I was think Obertos son is involved aswell so if Oberto kicks the bucket I am guessing the project will continue
