Obama to hack NASA's Constellation Program

It is a sad day for American space exploration. President Obama makes the motion to cancel Nasa's constellation program. The constellation program was Nasa's next step to return humans to the moon and potentially explore beyond earth/moon orbit. Nine Billion dollars have already been invested into this project. I would imagine that many of you are unaware that the space shuttle only has five remaining missions (9/2010 is the last) After that, we will not have a transport vehicle to orbit and will be forced to buy rides from Russia and or others nations.

I am really curious though why we need humans to explore space though. There is the Hubble Telescope that we could use for exploration. No idea if that is cheaper to use or anything like that but it is damn expensive to train astronauts to go into space and such. Plus the risk of the shuttle going boom.
 
its a shame, but this is how the general public feels about space exploration. they will only start to care when the satellites get so decrepit that their television signals start to go fuzzy.

maybe we need the money more elsewhere? just a shot in the dark there.... moon hasn't changed in the past years since our last visit, another decade and it will still be the same.
 
probably Obama trying to show that he is trying to limit spending on needless things, or needless things in his mind. As a die hard sci fi fan it kind of pisses me off we spend so much money on trivial shit but cannot spend a mere 9 billion on something as significant as exploring space.
 
if we need money elsewhere there are better places to cut spending then fucking NASA. Maybe our so called representatives shouldnt be living like millionaires, maybe we shouldn't spend hundreds of billions on F-22 jets that we don't even have a need for.
 
theres a whole lotta things we could cut spending to and nasa planning another trip to the moon is a step in the right direction. the moon isn't going to change in a decade fellas, relax. theres a lot of reasoning behind decisions like where to cut budget from and most of it is way over someone who isn't involved deeply in the system of politics.
 
The Constellation program wasn't just to return to the moon is was also to replace the space shuttle.(man/cargo transport) We will not have a orbital transport vehicle a year from now. Maybe you are unaware that we have a 75 billion dollar international space station floating in orbit? It is a waste of money if we can not easily excess this.
 
You do realize that most of our current technology can be derived from NASA right...? They're also not JUST going to the moon. Do you know what the ISS is?
 
seeing as how obama is making a notion towards raising the national debt ceiling by 1.9 trillion dollars, i dont think money is the primary concern
 
we aren't the only ones on the INTERNATIONAL space station. plenty of other capable countries on it. like i said, decisions made aren't made lightly and the reasons behind them are way over anyones on here. so go ahead and speculate and bitch, but i guarantee you that you would make the same decisions as obama. but again, every president is a fucking retard, right?
 
this is fucking bullshit. Scientific progression and exploration are practically human nature. Are we satisfied sitting around on earth surviving or should we be pushing the boundaries?

I think anyone who doesn't see the need for future technology is retarded. He's taking the easy way out (not that the decision is easy) and there are better places to take money from.

you just furthered my point. he spends. people complain. he cuts spending. people complain. the man could erase the deficit, have unemployment at a half percent, and reach world peace, and people would find something to bitch about.

you may think space is the most important, somebody else thinks whatever you think should be cut is important.

it just proves, that people want the same programs they have now, without the cost. thats just not possible.

i never fucken complained once. and under the presumption that space travel in this time is indeed important, there are other places to cut genius, like my 2 references to the 1.fucken 9 trillion dollar addition to national debt ceiling. something tells me that money may not have been the issue, and ill say it loud and clear so you dont read what i say and derive some completely astray meaning from it. i am not complaining

I think it is clear that you don't have much knowledge on this subject.

Plenty of capable countries on it? NASA's shuttle carried probably 75%

of the station to orbit and the Russians did the rest. Yes, there are

15 or 16 countries involved but most just bought rides and flight

time. 8 or 9 out of 10 people that go to the station are either

American or Russian and get there by Russian or American transport.

What it comes down to is that we have made a huge investment along with our international partners in building this is thing. Yet we wont have a way to get there?(many of our international partners depend on the USA to get there) We have already spend 9 billion on constellation, this project is in the works and they want to shut it down? Ridiculous.

back on the topic of the thread. i have yet to hear people point out what we should, (and can realistically) cut right now. people keep bringing up the debt, but not what we should cut.

and dont say the wars. id like to be out now just as much as the rest of you, but lets be honest, thats just not gonna happen.
 
i really have no idea what we should cut instead, im sure there are things, i just dont know, too young
 
You can change it based on who we send over there. Recon Marines, Delta, Rangers, the 2 Airborne Divisions, and SEALs are all super high end Special Forces or at least in the case of the Airborne they get paid a lot more on every deployment compared to regular troops. We could start there by not sending the top of the top guys that get paid hazard pay and such in addition to getting paid extra for all the specializations those guys have.
