(This is an example of how out of control Glen Beck and the rest of his crew are, and also how much power they have over the scared and ignorant people in this country. Think what they would have been saying if schools refused to show George Bush's address to school children. For god sakes people he is just talking to American kids asking them to stay in school and you are protesting? I have no explanation for this except poorly veiled racism and blind hate. Discuss...)

By Judy Keen and Greg Toppo, USA TODAY

Some schools won't show President Obama's online speech to the nation's students Tuesday because of the objections of administrators and parents.

Independence, Mo., School District Superintendent Jim Hinson says he's gotten "more calls than we've ever had on an issue," some from parents who will keep their children home Tuesday.

Obama will challenge students "to work hard, stay in school and dramatically reduce the dropout rate" in the noon ET speech, says White House spokesman Tommy Vietor. "This isn't a policy speech."

Lesson plans sent to schools originally suggested that students write letters to themselves "about what they can do to help the president." That language prompted conservative radio host Glenn Beck to say the White House goal is the "indoctrination" of children.

This week, the wording was changed to suggest that students' letters focus on ways to achieve their educational goals, Vietor says. The speech will be posted online Monday, he says.

Sandra Abrevaya, U.S. Education Department spokeswoman, notes that President George H.W. Bush addressed the nation's students on live TV in 1991.

Regardless of who the president is, says Brett Curtis, a parent in Pearland, Texas, "I don't want him coming into the schools and making a political speech to my children. ... It's just wrong."

Some schools are setting their own limits. Hinson says Obama's remarks won't be shown in elementary schools. Other teachers can decide whether to watch.

Stu Silberman, superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools in Lexington, Ky., says about 50 people have called to protest. Some "got riled up" after hearing on talk radio that the speech will have political themes, he says.

The speech will be shown in many classrooms, Silberman says. Other activities will be found for students whose parents don't want them to see it.

Instead of showing the speech, Texas' Wichita Falls Independent School District will put a link on its website so students and parents can watch at home, says spokeswoman Renae Murphy.

David Bradley, a Republican and member of the Texas State Board of Education, says Obama's speech bypasses the authority of states and local school administrators. His advice to parents: "If you're concerned, keep your kids home for the day."

Chuck Saylors, National PTA president, a father of four and a trustee of the Greenville County, S.C., School District, approves of any president's involvement in "doing something positive" to encourage students. "It's sad that we've had to turn yet something else into a political issue."

Elsewhere:

• The communications department at Florida's Sarasota County School District has gotten about 50 calls, says spokesman Scott Ferguson. Teachers can show the speech if it fits into their courses, and parents can decide if their children watch.

• Granite School District in Salt Lake City has gotten a few complaints at each of its 89 schools, says spokesman Ben Horsley. The district is sending a notice to parents advising them that they also can watch online.

• Mark Enderle, superintendent of the Fort Osage, Mo., School District, started getting calls on Monday. He's not requiring teachers to show the speech, nor is he discouraging it. Parents who object can have their children excused.

Enderle wonders why the speech has stirred such controversy. He supports a positive message about education from the White House, he says, "regardless of whether my president's name is Obama, Bush or Millard Fillmore."

i was never really a fan of obama but this crap glenn beck and other ridiculous conservatives are pulling is insane. i hate you glenn beck way you are such a diva

There I have created the most constructive post in this thread.

now the thread can end

Did you even look into what exactly this means, you pathetic piece of slime? This speech is coming to kids a day before he delivers his big health care speech to the adults of the US in his attempt to shove Obamacare down our throats. Past Presidents have encouraged kids to succeed, but you just pay attention to the disinformation you will be hearing come next Wednesday. I predict it will be a whole ton of trumped up shit to get kids to jump on board without showing the other side of this shit storm. I would be fine if he just told them to try your hardest to succeed, and to always excel to your fullest potential, and to never give up on anything. These aren't only good conservative values, they are good American values. If he comes on and talks about some political bullshit, then it is the beginning of a long run of indoctrination. The second he mentions healthcare and the need to pass it, I will become outraged. Let these kids grow up to form their own opinions, they don't need some demogouge telling them what to believe.

thread creator. its not the idea of the President talking to their kids that has these people scared. i would be its the idea of the president espousing his ideology on their kids that has them concerned. such as being your brother and sisters keeper, government fixes. etc...

but hey if he gets up and makes and inspirational speech about working hard, staying in school, and striving for something better than yeah i support him...

i actually have an idea, its a speech so its all written out, how about he release the text to his speech, let the parents read it, then if its just an inspirational, stay in school speech. they'd know..

You are so out of touch with this entire debate you moron, good job bringing up an educated and valid point.

It is not a political issue you primordial puss bucket. He is not pushing an agenda and he is the president of the US, the spokes person for success. Get Glenn Becks dick out of your ass and think for yourself you poorly evolved speck of fecal matter.

And fuck you on "conservative values" this is a bull shit term designed to disguise your protectionist, racist, ignorant, and religious views that have nothing to do with morality and hard work. You are trying to spread the idea that liberals are not hard workers which is completely false. Just look at my life compared to yours and we can see that pussy conservatives like you are failures.

The Republican party is ruining this country by not participating in government and has become so twisted that they will actually prefer the country to fall apart than a democratic president be successful in passing anything. Fuck you and your face.

the issue isnt what hes saying to kids you fucking morons its the fact that the government has no business in school like that. its just not right to have the president (doesnt matter if hes liberal or conservative) do that in school thats like what stalin did (not to call obama a socialist even though he pretty much is). it wasnt any better when HW bush did it either.

you do realize the government operates quite possible the WORLDS LARGEST monopoly... the public school system.

o wait i thought liberals hated monopolies at every chance they get. but not now..

haha, typical knee-jerk response. I am automatically a racist.....for reasons unknown. Since you know me so well already, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. And from my response, it is clear to you that I cling to my bible day and night. I think the only ignorant person here is you. And, by the way, I didn't get this from Glenn Beck. My school doesn't have fox news, therefore, as any rational person could deduce with a small measure of logical thinking, I don't have Beck's dick in my ass. Not I. I do my own research and develop my own opinions. I haven't looked into what the Conservative talking heads have been saying yet, but I assume it is either A.) Pretty much what I am thinking, or B.) A little more alarmist than what I am thinking. But you just watch. I am pretty sure you will be proven wrong when Wednesday comes and he starts spouting his viewpoints on healthcare. I'm telling you, it will be a political message. On the day before he trys to validate this screw job to these kid's parents, you bet you sweet ass it will be a political message. Just don't be too shocked if it is, because thousands of people see it coming.

I thought you might chime in. I can pretty safely say you are the biggest active douche on NS. You don't know what a monopoly is, you don't understand the public school system, and you are a drain on every thread you participate in.

Your arguments are so foolish I have to wonder if you have a mental disability. Every nation has public schools funded by the government. Its not a monopoly it is a public program.

You cant instill a capitalist system in school because there is no ROR.

Quite possibly the worlds largest monopoly... fuck you are dumb.

evolution is an unproven (and completely wrong) theory so maybe you should try insulting people using facts next time

this shit is retarded- we talked about it in my government and politics class today- even the hardcore republican old dude that sits next to me agreed- this is fucked up

1st. how can anyone be sure he's even going to speak much about politics?
2nd. who gives a fuck if he does? its actually probably good if he does. a little bit of teaching about what the president wants to do isnt bad for the kids, its good.
3rd. one school visit from the president, not gonna change anything anyway
maybe im missing the point, but it seems like these people who are still mad they lost the civil war or something, are just bitching about every little, basically unimportant, thing he does.

your ad hominem attacks really help to advance your ideals... or wait. nvm.

"Monopoly a market in which there are many buyers but only one seller"

now i realize this it not a true monopoly, yet IMO there are comparisons to be made.

i am also in NO way saying we should completely get rid of the public school system.

i laugh at how classless and condescending your posts are. thankyou, have a nice day. stay classy NS.

Please don't call yourself a conservative. It embarrasses those of us who actually are.
You are a Republican, not a conservative. The main difference being that Republicans these days assume that Obama is out to steel their mother's money and corrupt children and then go drink blood in a satanic temple. Conservatives also tend to think.

Well considering that the government runs the school system (and for the most part has done a pretty good job) as well as pays for it (well really we pay for it, but we give them money and then they pay for the schools) I would say it is perfectly reasonable for this government employee to talk to students. If parents disagree with the ciriculum they are free to enroll their children in a private school or homeschool them.

He should jest text everyone his speech, maybe upload it too facebook, then everyone can read it on their own time. JK

ATTENTION NS POLITICOS

Okay, so this thread was okay (at least as far as NS political threads go) until Delphi got in and started his post by calling Tasche a pathetic piece of fucking slime. Then it got personal, and Tasche started responding in kind, and now the thread is a mess. I've made a note of this. Next time I come into a political thread and see either of you (or anyone else if I think you should know better) bring the hate and personal e-violence to someone you disagree with, I'm banning you for a month. Yes, an entire month. And if that doesn't cut the bullshit out of threads like this one, I'm stumped.

Now, to the real issue. The real problem here is that the President is black. And there are certain schools that blacks should not be allowed into, even via sattelite.

No, I'm kidding, because this is fucking ridiculous. Yeah, having the president talk to kids about "the importance of

persisting and succeeding in school" is going to really hurt them in

the long-run. If possible, a real role model, maybe a Michael Vick,

should instead talk about the importance of dropping out as soon as

possible. Are you people kidding? If that's the message he's

"indoctrinating" children with, let's hope they all fall under his evil

librul mind control spell as completely as possible.

That being said, two things about craziness: number one, George Bush the First did something similar to this in 1991 and the left freaked out in congress in similar fashion. Craziness and stupidity goes both ways. That being said, there is a much larger "grassroots crazy" movement going on on the right at the moment than has been seen since the "red menace" was a problem. Number two, if you want to see REAL Glenn Beck craziness, check out his rant from yesterday, where he talks about the ARTWORK (yes, the artwork) in Rockefeller Center (NBC headquarters, the anti-fox network that puts Olbermann on MSNBC). Apparently, this artwork, made about 70 years ago, hides evidence of progressive-communists and facism! Oh Glenn, if only someone had had your journalistic integrity during the McCarthy era, NBC would have been shut down and we wouldn't have all these "damn pinkos are salting the earth!" problems.

There we go. At least there's still some sensible people still left in the States. I wonder sometimes.Honestly, I really don't think the US is going anywhere unless you guys drop that sense of near-racism you have towards the opposing political group. just my two cents.

By the way, I swear some of you look at every issue like this flowchart. It's like political paint-by-numbers, your opinions are decided for you.

Lesson plans sent to schools originally suggested that students write letters to themselves "about what they can do to help the president."

You gotta admit that this is a little disturbing. I know they changed it, but still..

Spokes person for success? More like the spokes person of affirmative action. Case in point, where the hell are his academic records? Even Bush and Kerry let out their average grades, would that mean he did worse than them? And don't say shit about his apparent magna cum laude at harvard, cause anyone with half a brain can see that he was coddled all the way through by professors determined to see him suceed.
If he was just going to read and tell the kids to suceed no one would care. The problem arises in that its just a veiled attempt to make kids sympathetic to the president. The writing topic "How can I best help the president" or whatever the hell it was, not acceptable. The department of education even changed it when it was exposed. Why? Maybe part of an agenda? Debateable, more likely, the way Obama's been lately, its just another case of a significant lack of judgement.

tin-foil-hat.jpg

You know, I don't usually enjoy Bill Maher aside from the occasional chuckle, but he was dead on... the right wing has moved itself into a mental hospital.

Of course because its so irrational to want to know something like that about the president.
No conspiracy, just mediocrity and idiocy running the nation, like Bush but worse. From legacy to affirmative action, both are bullshit.

Okay then, let's agree on both of those then: to prevent affirmative

action, only smart people with good grades may be president. To prevent

legacies, HUGE inheritance tax.

Of course it's irrational to actually care about what his grades were.

They're not particularly relevant. The only thing they were relevant

for re: Bush was making fun of him when he said something stupid like

"misunderestimate". Getting worked up over it is being a loon, as is

doubting Obama's intelligence. He's quite simply a very smart guy.

Whether you agree with his ideas, or whether being smart makes you a

good leader, sure, that's up for debate... but classifying everyone you

disagree with as a moron just doesn't make sense unless you're...

yknow, me.

Anyway, the conspiracy theories you managed to stick in there were a) Obama is actually a drooling moron and there is a vast conspiracy of harvard profs, faculty and administrationg covering that fact up, b) Obama's ascendance to the US presidency has been carefully guided by people as far back as his college days, who gave him things like "magna cum laude" and "chair of harvard law review" to ensure that he would one day lead the nation, c) the ultimate goal of which is to brainwash kids into believing in a left-wing agenda.

Get out the tin foil.

Reality Check: the speech he will give will be published the Monday before it happens,

a transcript will be available to parents on the school's

website. There will be a choice as to whether you want your kids to watch it

or not, and only those children who want to see the speech will have to

do so. No one will be forced to see it. This is anecdotal from a friend whose kids go to school in the US and whose school phoned him to tell him as much.

Don't try and connect dots that aren't there. Sure he was intelligent enough to pass, coupled with the vested interest of his professors, the last thing they want is for their few minority students to fail. Had nothing to do with being carefully guided? I never once inferred any conspiracy theory, nor can you back up any of those 3 points you made with anything I've actually put down in writing.
To add to that I'm tired of hearing about his "chair of the harvard law review", that isn't a position awarded for intellect. He was given that position because his fellow editors voted him into it. Its not some kind of intellectual achievement as Obama's supporters like to claim. Seeing how easy it was for him to sway the American public with is very thin record of public service, it doesn't surprise me that he would be elected president of the harvard law review editors.
Like I've said, no one should care if he's just going to tell kids to do well in school. The controversy arose because of such topics of "how can I help the president", which are not acceptable for any president. But if you want to degenerate this simple argument back into conspiracy theory go right ahead.

first of all, I never called him a piece of fucking slime, not once, so you are wrong there. I called him pathetic slime, but not pathetic fucking slime. His Glenn Beck comment got me back for that, but it was probably disproportionate. You threaten to ban us for a month for something like that, yet you say nothing about the death panel killing me comment. Are you going to start banning people who have contrary opinions to your own, because if you are, you may want to report me to flag@whitehouse.us. Don't worry, I have already reported myself, I'm just waiting for the Secret Service to swoop down and chastise me.

I actually deleted the death panels post.

I love people who accuse me of playing politics when I enforce the site rules. The point is, you attacked him personally. I'm going to click on political threads every once in a while from now on. Usually those threads descend into madness, stupidity and name-calling. Usually someone starts throwing stones at some point, which is what sets it off. So, in future, anyone who does so first (the way you did in this thread) is banned for a month, whether it's you, or tasche, or salcedo, or ben. So from now on, keep it in your pants. Not that it wouldn't be nice not to hear from you for a month.

too lazy to read, but here would be my comment. noone shit themselves when reagan actually talked about lowering taxes when he talked to kids. so seriously chill the fuck out. no one is being indoctrinated.

i mean christ hes the fucking president. i hated bush, hated him, and i still would be stoked to see him speak, BECAUSE HES THE FUCKING PRESIDENT

Oh, and that doesn't include things like "here's why everything you said is fucking stupid". You can still do that. Just no personal attacks. There is simply no need for that crap.

You're a spokesperson of stupidity on NS (don't ban me JD, it's the truth anyway). The president is a role model for many young kids, regardless of his political performance. How many little kids say "I wanna be the President when I grow up." A lot. Therefore, yes, he is a spokesperson for success.

Also, this whole lesson plan this is blown way out of proportion. It wasn't "exposed," it was just a sentence worded in a way that people can twist it around to mean that he is trying to recruit a student army or something. How about the more likely situation, that this was in an elementary school lesson plan. President gets on TV, makes speech about doing well in school. Teacher follows up with question "How how can we help the president?" Billy raises his hand, "Try hard in school!" Mission accomplished, Billy has now been "brainwashed" into valuing his education. Billy is in elementary school, he doesn't understand socialized healthcare or the economy or federal bailouts, and he won't even be voting age when Obama tries for reelection, so there's no way he is being made into a democrat, since he doesn't even understand politics yet.
