Oakley Monopoly

Don't you think it is lame how oakley sponsores 80% of the best skiers! They have a complete monopoly on skiing. if you look at the snbrding industry they have so many more goggle companies that have so many sick riders, and there isn't many snb riders that have clothing sponsores with oakley. personal i think this is bad for the ski industry because it makes it impossible for smaller brands to be created because they wont get much piblicity in the ski industry with no uber pros wearing there stuff. And that leaves us with less options for sick get ups. i do believe that oakleys stuff is sick but i wish we had more clothing companies that made sick stuff besides oakley. Plus i bet oakley hooks up their riders real well so nobody wants to sign with smith or spy. is it a bad thing? what ya'll think?

.

hmm, oakley definately has it figured out. I imagine that they have a TON of money to offer riders to travel, compete, tons of free schwag, sick goggles and outerwear, so it would be hard to turn them down. It's up to the rider who he chooses to support.

Siver Cartel is blowing up man, I'm digging their shit so hard! Spy is my fav goggle brand. No matter what though, there is always going to be one company that is just huge. If you think about it though Oakley puts so much money into skiing and boarding that their riders become known all over the world and that promotes our sport. All the skiers sponsored by Oakley are all great guys and I imagine boarders are too. They probably make them sing long contracts so they dont just leave if they feel like it. It's hard to say, that's my take on it.

Has anyone ski Bear Paw Ski Bowl? Fun place to ski lots of rocks and icy kickers

oakley has a lot of the best pros but now all of them. chrighton, olenick, cr, belenger, candide, ect.

shit happens when you party naked

I think its fine, O prices are coming down a little and their outerwear sucks this year. I still like a lot of Oakley but others defi them and go for strictly sessions and whatnot. Now with anon making sick goggs cheaper and new skiers going with more untraditional companies it will not be a prob. Oakley does always hang on to its riders though, you never see someone be like Oakley sucks I don't want to be sponsored by them anymore.

Oakley started sponsoring skiers for newschool way before other companies offering similar product. They've put a lot of money into the sport to help it grow and have a great business approach and image. They deserve what they have.

Some people are trying to snowboard here!

Oh I get it. Sorry to ruin your day.

Personally I think that Smith has a better team with Pete, Sage, CR, and a bunch of others. Scott has a great team and Spy is putting to gether agood one two. The only problem I have with Oakley is them pretty much making their riders drop their clothing and outerwear sponsors to ride for Oakley. Burton does the same thing with all their subcompanies like Anon, Red, Gravis, and Ronin.

The ski segment makes so little of the overall profit that oakley as a congolmerate pulls in. They have huge contracts with the US military to provide eyewear and goggles for soliders in the middle east.

Look at their website, they do not even have pro rider profiles. They could give a shit about skiing, they just know that they have enough money to come in and dominate the entire niche. Must be nice.

I own you

^ are you retarted?.........skiing and boarding pulls in huuuuuuuge cash for oakley. All their clothing lines and googles are specifically designed and amnufactured for skiing and boarding. They wouldn'e exist as a company if it weren't for these two sports

actually scratch, radoripper has a good point... sure on a small scale to you they may be making a lot of money from skiing, a few million, but the miliatry contract alone is huge, well over anything they would make from ski gear...

Drop Cliffs not Bombs

Redbull was genious being first in on extreme anything and oakley saw that and got going, Smith has a great team 2 since they have been around forever but oakley and redbull get what they deserve for dominating the last 10plus years of sports that 95% of the population doesn't know exist like parachute skimming and all that crazy redbull shit.

Duffman can't breathe .. oh no

hm, i wouldn't say that they have their riders by the balls or anything: look at JP Auclair - he's sponsered by oakley just for eyewear. for outerwear he's under orage and sublux.

I love their goggles but i dont like thier outerwear, i just dont like their style, i dont really know what it is, mayby its just that thay are way over priced.

ok the way i look at it is like this. Oakley makes a whole bunch of skiers, because yes for the military they are making goggles, but when you think about it, skiers buy the clothing as well. Also, when you think about all the people in the ski industry and snowboard industry it probably makes up a large population. It is probably really close in terms of money between how much boarders and skiers put in compared to the u.s. government.

TRY EVERYTHING EVEN IF IT MEANS KICKING YOUR OWN ASS

^^Actually scratch....I am not retarded. I am quite accurate in fact. The military contracts make up over 70% of the revenue and the rest is split up amongst all of the other segments. Skiing and boarding is a very very small percentage of the overall profit. Oakley depends almost NOTHING on ski and snowboard product sales.

Before you run your mouth you should know the facts. It's ok though, I never really expect much enlightenment on this site anyways.

I own you

they definitely have some commitment in skiing.

just look at all the money they put into 1242, and they have some super cool people making decisions for them like greg strokes

Companies like Oakley and Red Bull put a lot of time, money, and effort into skiing. You might not like their products, or their prices, but they're sick, and they've worked hard to get to their respective positions.

Of course they put a lot of time and money into skiing....but it is not a large percentage of the company at all. When you have a multi multi mutli million dollar organization, 10% (skiing) is 20 million plus. They dedicated a segment to skiing b/c they can....they have lots and lots and lots of money. Nike could do the same thing if they wanted.

Look at their website. Where is the ski section??? Where is the team page??? They don't have one! www.oakley.com They go hire a guy like Strokes and say 'make the skiers like us.' They buy their status, which is fine, but don't act like they really care about skiing, because the C Level Execs at Oakley could give a shit.

I own you

shit man 70% that is a fuckload. now iknow why they are starting up camo gear. I smell conspiracy. The u.s. government is getting oakley to produce camo to get more army soldiers AHAHAHA. Joking. But shit 70% is a fuckload of money.

who here actually buys ski gear because someone else was wearing it and its supposedly cool. i buy my gear based on the quality first, i dont even care who skis or rides for them. i have alot of respect for oakley and red bull and all the other monster companies that support our sport in the way that they do.

Austin Ramaley, Stephan Thomas, Corey Vanular, JP Solberg, Travis Redd, Gagnier, Dylan Hood, Andy Mahre, and Dave Crichton! None are Oakley and all are Spy! Luke Van Valin, Griffin Cummings, Josh Bibby, TJ Schiller, and Niklas Karlstrom! Just to name a few more ridiculously steeezey skiers that are not on Oakley

Poniverus and 4frnt

Steezn it

Its interesting to think that in the ski industry as a whole, last year, twin tip or 'park skis' made up only 3% of total sales in skiing.

With that said, I wouldn't think that Oakley could believe that they will make a substantial profit from skiing. Therefore I think that they use their income from other markets ie. the military, as well as the general public, to fund their skiing segments.

This makes me believe that they are interested in supporting the ski industry. Oakley has made a name for themselves and may be corporate or overpriced, but I do think good comes from them.

Just my 2 cents

But of the skiers who get the most publicity oakley has them all.

Tanner Hall, Simon Dumont, and Jon Olsson get 10 times more publicity than every skier on the spy team combined - Oakley has all the mainstream pros that are household names. The ones you see winning X games and the only ones your parents can think of when they are trying to sound cool and newschool - oakley dominates skiing like burton dominates snowboarding. Burton makes sick stuff though, and so does oakley.

'I feel like I am taking crazy pills!' Oakley is one of if not hte biggest sunglass companies in the world. The revenue they pull in from glasses alone eclipses the goggle/outerwear profit at least 100 times over. Just think about it this way. For every pair of goggles or jacket they sale. They sale at least 50 pairs of sunglasses (probally way more). Sunglasses are cheap as dirt to make and that is why they are able to sponsor real celebrities like Lil'Jon for sunglasses. The military contract thing is likely true, but it is highly unlikely that any one on this site has the slighest clue on the details o fthis contract. If you think the ski reps know that kind of stuff you are kidding youself.
