I don't know about others, but Im personally a massage therapist, and holistic health / nutrition nerd. I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can talk about health, nutrition, issues your having, painful muscles, diet stuff etc.

I can answer a lot of questions about the body, food, herbs, etc. If anyone else has a wealth of knowledge on any health related topics, let us know... Otherwise...

Ask away!

What is your favorite (go to) foods to pack for a AT day or even a first to last chair day? What gives you the most energy without weighing you down, and still tastes good cold?

This is a good idea, Ashlai.

I'm a pharmacy technician, so I can also answer some health related questions

Those little Justin's nut butter packets are gold. I usually have one or two on me skiing longer days. Also trail mix is not just delicious, it's got protein, fats and carbs, it's nutrient dense and it was created for long days on the trail. I like to make my own with dark chocolate chips, and lots of different nuts, seeds and some currants or cranberries.

And if I'm going out of bounds all day, my go to lunch is salami, cheese and crackers. It's good cold, easy to grab at the store, and easy to share!

How oh how do I make my back stop hurting? This last month I've been getting recurring back pain right between my shoulder blades. Not sure what's been causing it, either. It feels like I need to crack my back but can't and the one time I did it hurt like hell. Any suggestions?

Sorry it took me so long to respond! I'll give you a better answer when I get home in a couple hours! :)

I get horrible sun blisters when I ski/ am outside all year round. I've tried 14839432342 lip balms/ sunscreens, but nothing works. Recommendations?

This is great! I was wondering, are there some vitamins that are really good to help with joint health? I see some advertised but i don't know if they're really good. I'm coming back from a knee injury and thought maybe some vitamins would help? :)

Is there any natural way to help bruises heal faster and or better because soon my legs are going to be all purple and yellow. Any suggestions would be great!

Sorry this took longer than I though. My computer broke ahaha.

If you have a tennis ball, try rolling around on it. If you find a spot that seems to be a knot, I know it's counterintuitive, but just let the ball sink into it for a couple of minutes. Keep doing that with any spots that are painful, and do it a couple times a week. Also, if you have that much pain with cracking your back, if it was me, I would go to a chiropractor!

What elevation are you at? Like a sunburn or?

Glucosamine is really good for your joints! You can take it in a supplement, or you can get glucosamine sports drinks and things like that. I've also read that omega-3s can help with that as well.

You're seeing a pt, right?

Arnica can help with that! It's magical. If you don't know what it is, you can find it at any health food store, and you will want it in a gel or cream. It's kinda like natural icy hot, but it doesn't have the same feeling.

Also doing really light massage from the bruise up towards your heart can stimulate the healing process too! If you want to go as far as this, putting like 5-10 drops of lavender essential into a natural body lotion and using it for that massage can be even better!

calcium and vitamin d are both really good too

anything to help reduce scarring?

If the wound is still healing, putting lotion or vaseline on it daily will help prevent it from scarring. If the wound is past that, keep it out of the sun and if you have to have it in the sun, be sure to use sunscreen. Do this for like a year depending on how bad the scar is. Basically if it's skin colored, you're fine. If it's pink or purple-y, use sunscreen.

Commercial scar lotions are pretty much a gimmick. And vitamin E never helped me either. You can just use any lotion you want and follow their instructions.

Source: I have extensive burns on my legs and have subsequently dealt with lots of scarring.

I've been using Vitamin E oil since I took the stitches out on Tuesday. Normally I rock my scars with pride but this one is going to be bad. It really looks like the stitches on a football.

Rock it like no one's business! Haha, I wear shorts all year long. I can't guarantee you won't scar at all but this will at least help. I personally got staples and skin graphs so my thighs looked something similar to a horror movie for quite a few years but I was super diligent about sunscreen and lotion until the color went back to normal (took about 6+ years for me). But now my legs look pretty damn good. My skin tone evened out quite nicely and the weird scar texture has pretty much smoothed itself out. Hopefully your scar isn't as bad, but take care of it and it will heal nicely. Just have to be patient :)

Great thread :-)

I have what I think is haematoma on my left butt / top of thigh from falling off learning a trick one two many times onto icy snow. I've had it for about 6 months. Will it ever go away / how can I make it go away? I hate it and it hurts to lay on sometimes.

Thanks for any advice!

anyone ever had bone bruising?

Yes, and it's awful.

A few years ago I cased a jump so hard onto a hard icy knuckle. Bruised my calcaneus (pretty much the entirety of my heel on the underside of my foot), which caused my tibia and fibula to smack together into my knee. The knee part is somewhat separate to the bone bruise of my heel, but I was on crutches for a solid 5 weeks or so. There wasn't much to do except for to stay off of it and take anti inflammatories which is hard to do when it's kind of essential for walking. The heel healed up in a little over a month, but the knee took a long time to heal and for me to be comfortable with it again.

With your knee and you've already had surgery, it's a little different. Definitely take it easy and take some anti inflammatories, even taking glucosamine for your joints could help to lubricate the knee a bit more. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor/physio to see if they can do more, but unfortunately with bone bruises it just takes time...

Yeah It's definitely not that serious. I went to Physio and the Doc and they both said it seems fairly minor. I have like 75/80% regular movement and without any kind of pain or discomfort, can walk, run etc. normally for the most part without anything happening, its mostly just hampering full flexion. There's no pain really it's just still swollen and the joint line is a little sore. But not on crutches or anything

Oh that's really good news then! Do you still wear your brace? I probably used mine a little too much, but I always felt way more confident while wearing it, especially while skiing.

yeah I was wearing my brace when I fell too. Right now I'm wearing it all the time just for extra support

oh shit, yeah I feel that. Well hopefully you can recover quick to get back out there, being out during the season is such a bummer.

So not sure where to put this, but...

So about a week and a half ago I was being stupid and playing in the park (where I always get hurt) and slid out weird, felt my knee pain immediately, but was able to ski it off. Similar injury last Feb, same knee same spot, that I never got checked out, healed on its own. Fast forward to now and it's been getting worse everyday. Stepping over things, up and down stairs, straightening my leg, the pain is pretty much every other step now. Surprisingly it doesn't bother me much while actually skiing, it's when I click out and try to walk around when the pain comes back.

Went to the village clinic yesterday and they suspected a meniscus tear and referred me to an orthopedic in town. Called and got in this morning, they seemed pretty concerned because of the pain not getting any better and how tender my knee is. Did xrays, no fracture. All the main ligaments; ACL, MCL, LCL all seem to be structurally intact, good. But still not sure what's causing the pain. Getting an MRI this week, was supposed to be today but my insurance was being stupid.

Anyways, fuck.

Just got almost 3 feet of snow in 2 days, think I'm going skiing tomorrow (with my brace), I mean, I'm getting an MRI anyways?

If I were you I would but I'm stupid like that. The way I would look at it is you're only going to make your meniscal tear worse and if it is a meniscal tear then you have to have surgery anyway so it's not a dire loss (Although athroscopies suck and if you get rid of too much meniscus you're fucked in the future). I don't think you're at a huge high risk of tearing it more either (could be wrong on that, but I think that's what my physio told me), so I say go for it. If you do have confidence though, you don't want to be favouring that knee and then hurt your other knee because you're either off balance or putting too much pressure on your good knee.

Well the irony is real here.

Just got home from an MRI on my knee. I have a massive bone bruise on my femur. The doc said he's never seen one so big and I was lucky I didn't break my femur. He says nothing besides walking, stationary bike or swimming for 4-6 weeks. I don't know if I can hold out that long.

Here's some photos. Normal bone color is grey, like the bottom bone. The white area are the micro fractures (bone bruise).

^ Holy fuck that's insane!! Hope you recover well. Bone bruising is such a bitch. You are sooo lucky you didn't fracture it though! I had bone bruising like half that size and my surgeon said it was lucky it didn't fracture.

Ladies of newschoolers!

I think we can all agree that skiing and sex are two of the best feelings in the entire world. I recently found out that I tore my ACL, need to have surgery...so my ski season is over. Super bummed about it.

My boyfriend and I haven't made any real changes to our sex life since the injury, though, my knee is often super sore and swollen afterward. I love to be on top and I'm way bummed out because I just don't see how this will even be possible post surgery. Like wtf. I have to give up skiing anddddd my favorite kind of sex??!

Now I know there has gotta be some females out there who have gone through ACL surgery while having a boyfriend...what do you suggest??? I know I'd get bored af with sex if it's just always him on top and stuff gahh. How do I enjoy getting laid the weeks after surgery as much as I always have?

Please tell me I'm not the only chick who has been faced with this dilemma..the struggle is real.

sorry to say if you're knee is anything like mine after surgery you won't be having sex for a few weeks. but hey everyone's different. On top try and go to the edge of a bed/couch whatever and hang your bad leg over the side, easiest if you can touch the ground but don't put a lot of weight on it. it's just a lot of manoeuvring and finding what doesn't hurt pretty much. I mean for the first few weeks you're gonna be swollen, sore, and have very little range of motion if you're not immobilized after but that depends on the surgeon.
