What even is new wave. I see guys doing tech tricks in trackpants, does that make them new wave? I see people swerving around in snow pants, are they new wave?

I mean a lot of skiers I know have a clean smooth style but still do tech tricks, and they like to wear track pants, and i don't see why they can't. If you ski park like 90 percent of the time why do you need snow pants? People wear hoodies, why do the pants have to be waterproof? Lets ditch the new wave and old wave terms and appreciate freeskiing for the style, creativity, flipping, spinning, and many other dimensions freeskiing offers that I can't think of. When you see a kid do a dub in track pants appreciate the trick not the pants. Let people wear what they want, and again lets focus on things that matter like the tricks, style, and creativity.

the transition from old to new during 2012-2016 was my favourite time IMO- so many unique and original styles coming out but still a lot of OG's throwing down.

Thats one heckuva generalization. In terms of clothing, style, trick selection, equipment, and even edits new wave and old school are hella different, ski how you want-sure. Saying they're the same because "It's all skiing" is stupid- what about racing, telemarking, or touring? are they all the same because "iT's alL skIiNg"? or hell we should just clump cross country in there too cause I guess that's skiing too.

Opinion:

There are many differences in skiing with its many styles and disciplines. I could give a fuck if I upset anybody especially a bunch of skiers on a dying forum. Splitting up park skiing, the most niche of all forms of skiing with stupid ass names, when people do the same tricks with different clothes on and wave their arms a little differently is fucking retarded.

It’s seriously the dumbest shit that’s ever happened to this sport. If you’re offended by me saying it’s all the same, because wearing fucking track pants and a wizard cap and doing tricks people have been doing for years is labeled as “new wave”. Like it’s some totally new and different shit that’s never ever been done before...go fuck yourself. At the end of the day, it’s skiing, no matter where you are how you do it or what trick you do, it’s all free skiing. There is no new wave / old wave, it’s skiing. You don’t hear any of the guys in the lime light call it new wave, it’s all the fucks that talk about it online. When I’m skiing and I see a kid in track pants do a shuffle after a rail trick I don’t say “woah dude that was a sick new wave trick!” That sounds fucking dumb.

Old wave vs New wave is dumb.

How’s that for forming an opinion
 
That being said, the shit that mango and magnus are doing has never been done before, but it would have happened regardless of clothing trends. If track pants never popped off and the whole thrift store scene didn’t make its way into skiing, they would have been doing the same tricks in their tall t’s like they were doing in 2014/rant

I get "it's all skiing" but dude you're just completely ignoring the differences of those eras because it doesn't fit with your "chill boi chubz just likes to ski maaaan" mindset. They're 100% different if you actually cared enough to look into the style,culture, and inspiration behind them. But whatever, if you prefer to ski in ignorance then I'm happy to support your decision to do so just as I would you'd do the same, ya know- As a fellow skier.

Old wave was heavenly influenced by hip hop and snowboarding hence the gangster tall t heavy head style, it’s quite obvious how much new wave is influenced by skateboarding culture. I’m not denying that. I appreciate the culture and influence of each “form” of freeskiing but in my opinion I think labeling it is stupid. I think the words used to label it are dumb. We couldn’t have picked a better name than new wave? Who decided that was the term we used?

But it comes with everything. The transition period between the ogs, jf cusson, JP Auclair, Evan Raps, the Canadian Air Force etc..to the tall t wearing Tom Wallisch, Mike hornbeck, henrik etc..I’m sure that era was labeled as the new wave by the people accustomed to the old way of skiing. And I’m sure when everybody broke away from moguls and created freeskiing they were labeled as the new wave.

I appreciate it all, don’t get me wrong, I love what’s happening in skiing right now I just hate the discussion about it. I hate the endless new wave threads and how people don’t shut up about it. The reiteration of conversations every month about the same shit. It gets old. Idk maybe I’m just jaded. But the 15 year olds who all they know are new wave this and new wave that and make endless threads about the same thing just drive me crazy.

I agree the labels do get dumb and Im over these MF new wave threads. At the same time though kids make labels because it's an identity they either do or don't want to fit, or because it makes talking about a certain style easier. You're right though theres been tons of "new waves" over the years but I think this one is so polarizing because the culture damn near did a complete 180 and people either love it or hate it. IMO I think skiing needs the diversity, the comp scene, new wave, old school, hesh, and even big mountain bros all have a place and frankly keeps the scene from getting any more stale than it already is. Personally the only thing that irritates me about the new wave is the kids who ride it super hard and imitate it tit for tat, the whole idea of new wave was to branch off and try new styles and tricks but IMO it's all ended up looking the same in the end because oddly it seems that its only new wave if Magnus or the health_gang are doing it.

I'm glad we can have a legit skiing discussion like this site was intended for.
 
Shouldn’t we focus our hate on snowboarders instead of new wave v old wave , or is the skier v snowboarder considered old wave ? Or new wave? Is there an in between wave, how about ripples ....

Is not giving a fuck and just skiing it’s own wave ? What shall we call it ?

Am I old wave bc I wear waterproof pants and a jacket ? Is that why all these broke ass lil shits mean mug me in the lift line
 
I think I can speak for a lot of fifteen year olds, because I am one and a lot of kids I know feel similarly.

It's fun to try different styles of skiing. This season I tried the thrift new wave thing for a few random days. And I think I know why a bunch of kids are jumping 9n the new wave train

1. It's a way to loosen up your skiing, and not have perfect form. Getting loose with no poles swerving around is fun. I was taking my skiing less seriously and actually had a really good time.

2. Kids understand that they aren't gonna go anywhere in skiing from comps because the crazy stuff European and Chinese kids are doing. New wave is like an outlet from that where you can try your own stupid tricks, butter combos and swerves.

3. You can still do your tech tricks. 3 swap pretz 2 with a swerve on the landing still looks wavy and is an insane trick. It allows you to add on to tricks you currently know.

All this being said, if it's a pow day I'm gonna wear all the basic waterproof gear with goggles worn properly. Also, even if it's a park day, you dont yave to ski with the waviness. Switch up between styles to really see what you like to do. It's all fun and it's all sick. Also, skiing new wave doesn't require on3p or vishnu. Ride what you want and you feel comfy with.

You can literally do everything you just said without labeling it was new wave.

Learning butters isn’t “swerving” it’s a trick. You don’t try and fit a certain style of skiing you just wear what you think is cool and do what feels right and your style comes naturally. If you into the day thinking about what you’re wearing and trying to fit in a style you’re doing everything wrong.
 
I dropped my poles and wore a sweatshirt and mitts today so I could follow cam my 5 year old daughter slide her first box by herself today. Now that's New Wave...

I agree with this, except for the last part. You can't expect a bunch of kids to not care about what they look like. What you wear is a defining characteristic in not just skiing, but someone's everyday life.

I feel that people are labeling buttering w/ track pants new wave in effort to give them a sense of accomplishment and community with little effort. Also maybe its an angsty teen type thing wanting to go against the grain? Either way I've never been a fan of their "swerves" and "shuffles" which are mostly just shitty butters while waving your arms around.

The least I can ask is there isn't a new shit post new wave thread once a week.

When you start to develop a detailed idea of your style on skis that’s when you permitted to start match the aesthetics of your clothes to your style ... usually we can all judge someone and conclude in a heart beat if someone is good based on the $$$ value of all the gear but in reality it’s all being yourself.
