NSG, I need computer help.

Hey guys!I need help with my computer because it is stupid and won't stay connected to the internet for very long. I have an Acer Aspire 3810 and I have Shaw (Vancouver) for internet service. I am 99.99% sure it isn't my internet service because my roommates two computers both work on it (he has a desktop PC and a Macbook Air), and they work fine.

Now my computer is constantly saying that it can't load webpages, but I am connected to the network, but with no internet access. I have tried resetting my modem. I changed all the settings on the battery and power options to allow maximum wifi usage. I have tried changing what channels I am on for my internet (11n, 11b, mixedmode, etc.) and none of it works. If I disconnect from the network, then reconnect, I can get my internet back for a bit, but it never stays connected longer than 30 minutes. And this only happens on my home network.

Anyone have any ideas? I thought I would try here before forking out money to a computer store.

Thanks for your time!

I know they can, but I was just hoping that I am missing unblocking a firewall or something that is a super easy fix, or I am missing a driver...I don't know. I googled all the things I could think of before posting in NSG and nothing really became of it so I thought I would try here first.

control panel > network and internet > network and sharing center> internet options..make sure your connection>LAN settings are set as automatically detect settings and automatic configuration script is on.

Another thing to do is click on the little connection icon on the bottom right of your screen and right click on your chosen connection then click status > wireless properties: make sure it's set to connect automatically when network in range.

Another solution would be to go to browser settings (of whatever browser you currently use) and allow proxy connection. If you can get a little bit of internet for a while I suggest trying to download another browser such as Firefox, Chrome or Opera to see if they work ( you can toggle their settings to allow proxys etc).

I had a very similar problem a few weeks ago with my Uni connection; i had a perfectly fine internet connection but couldn't access any webpages or applications which needed the internet. I pretty much went through all the net settings and browser settings I could until it worked.

Does your internet provider maybe have it so you have to provide them with a MAC address to allow you to connect to the network? On some networks you can only connect if the network allows your MAC address to be able to connect to the internet.

But I would just call the internet people and tell them what is up. Also are your roommates desktop and maxbook air on wifi or wired? And can you get on the internet if you hard wire in?

I called Shaw last night. They remotely reset my modem and stuff. They told me it wasn't them, and I believe them. I get internet sometimes, and I have changed all my settings... I guess it's my wireless card then.

Oh well. I have been looking at maybe buying a new computer anyways, so I guess now its as good of a time as any.

dang maybe its the comp! i have an aspire 4810tz and it does the same thing, but i always just blamed it on the network (i go to university so it's not like i can reset the modem or anything..).

Yah Acer kind of sucks...no offense.

I would look into getting a Vaio..they are amazing and you can get them for relatively cheap.

honestly i think i am gonna buy an iMac and have a desktop and then get a netbook later on or something. like this computer still works, it's just not reliable and the keys are coming off and such. i'm not in school right now so i don't need the portability of a laptop.

as my mom puts it, Acer's are "disposable"
