NS Video Rating System/Homepage

TLDR

1. Change default home tab to "Top Day"

2. When you filter by "highest rated," I want to see content with the most upvotes

3. Put the daily "featured" homepage vids/articles back to 10 rather than 4

Hey guys, I've been becoming slightly irritated with the new home screen and whole video rating system. I know NS has all these fancy algorithms to determine what shows up first when you hop on the site, but it seems to me like there's too much emphasis put of the hot stuff while the best content quickly gets buried. I think that by default the homepage should bring you to the "Top Day" tab so that when someone comes on to check in once in a while or someone is new to the site, instead of seeing some random kid's edit with 30 upvotes first, we see the best content put out across the ski world. Which brings me to my next point... when I click the "Top all-time" tab, I want to see the highest-upvoted vids of all time. No algorithms, just the most upvotes. Not that hard, I don't think. I find an edit with 800 upvotes on the 10th page while one with 200 is on the first page. Doesn't really make sense, yeah? Finally, I did like the daily featured vids/news (though too much emphasis is put on news that no one reads), it made it easy to catch up on what I missed each day I didn't check in to NS. Whey have these featured vids dropped down to a rotation of 4 rather than 10? I think it was much better to have a greater amount of solid content right there for everyone to see first thing.

Anyways, love the site, just a rant on easy things I think should be fixed. Would love to hear your feedback.

I do think the way articles are rated could be looked at. Up votes are great but only work for members. If articles are getting most of their views from outside sources and many of the viewers are not actually members it can skew the rating. An article could get a tonn of views from say Facebook but perhaps only 10% of those views are from members. So although it can get loads of views the up vote vount can be really low as non members can't vote. It happens In reverse too. Articles and things which are very newschoolers may only get say 1000 views but because nearly all those views are from members it ends up with a higher rating.

Dont know how to change it but with less and less views coming from the site and more from non members else where I do think the rating system needs looking at.

The article I posted a while ago had a reach of 315,000 viewers and like 60-70ish up&down votes. So like if that many people came across it, it's pretty low to only have that many votes. So I totally see what you're saying.

Maybe do a vote through facebook kind of thing? That way people can't vote a million times but you also don't need to be a member to vote!

Well reach will always be huge. How many views did it get for those 60-70 up votes?

Dang I always confuse reach vs views. But it had about 1,700 views, so about 1 in 28 people who saw it voted.

Yeah see really 60-70 up votes is really good for that. I have an article with over 11000 views but only 70 up votes and another at 6500 whic gets about 60 views a day but it only has 13 up votes.

Just noticed that you can comment using a facebook widget thingy now! So that's pretty cool.

the facebook comment thing is cool any chance of an upvote version. News today is a perfect example, you have the article about park design on 6600 views but it was beaten to home page slider by an article with 2420 views but more upvotes. Then today you have an article (radish) with 3140 views but the slider article only has 1660 views but again more upvotes. It would seem upvotes are really skewing the news at the moment as actual views don't seem to mean much. as ever just my opinion

i agree but could that lead to super click bait-y titles though?

i don't wanna see newschoolers turn into buzzfeed
