NS Secret Santa 2014

I'll continue to handle the banning, I am definitely going to be in the background. I just cannot run the show.

Rachy - that refund idea is pretty solid since its so easy for you to just refund. I actually like that more than the perma banning. This way there are funds left over for whoever is left out, can get them a simple gift cert to bc.com ya know? Or something.

I like the $1 or $2 buy in as stated up there^ remaining money can be used to purchase gifts for those left empty handed and the rest can be donated back to newschoolers.

I think $2 is perfect. I'd rather lose $2 to do something awesome then wait on $20.

If there is extra left over, donating to NS would be be cool. But since it is the holiday season, I think it would be really cool to donate to a skiing related charity.

Also banhammer.

do the 2$ buy in it sounds wayy more feasible to me! Also please don't do the 1k posts i barley post on here but would love to do this!

Hate to say it, but NS doesn't need the donation. $2 is also too cheap, I'd never be down with that.

Yeah, that's why I said donate it to charity...

But how many people joined last year, then how many didn't get gifts? Two was just being thrown around so I went with that. I wouldn't mind a $5 buy in.

I've been doing it for two years, it's great. So far i've gotten gifts from Jane6 and Magnus, which was awesome.

Like the artist formerly known as Chewy said, what would the amount be?

Basically we need to know how many people signed up and how many people went without gifts last year.

i would be down for like a 10$ or less buy in and then no refund and use the money to get people gifts it just sounds way easier to me then refunding everyone money and Im sure other people (including myself) would be down for shopping for the gift for the people that never got one.

also dunno about that, but pow or alpine initiatives could be cool

There was only one person left out last year, right? (Sorry Hippy) That's a pretty amazing statistic and says a lot about the system last year.

I dig the idea of a deposit rather than threat of perma-ban (it's a little more cheerful) but the amount would have to be a lot more than a few bucks to be effective collateral. Also, how does the deposit/return thing work with non-North American members and currency? Sounds like something that could spiral into complexity, especially around the holidays.

Is there a way that Europeans would get matched up with other Europeans? If there was I'd probably be up for getting involved.

So, I have received a lot of offers of help and a lot of messages and the likes.

This really seems plausible.

If you have done it successfully, you can either accept a ban if you fail this time, or do the deposit.

If you have not done it before. Deposit.

With the deposit, you automatically lose 90 cents of it. So you get $19.10 back. If it's a foreign transaction, they do it at the same rate as when you paid. If your own bank charges you, I can't help you there.

To the non North Americans... If you just prefer the ban option and the possibility of no gift, we can take that route since there will be a lot less of you.

To anyone who is seriously interested but really can't afford the $20 but has some stuff already at home that you would be really excited to give and you swear that you can afford the cost of shipping (It might be higher than you think)... We can deal with you on a case by case basis.

To anyone still wanting to donate to charity, I'd be happy to send your money over to Stoked Mentoring or Disabled Sports USA. You just let me know ;)

Does this sound reasonable?

I'm in. These terms sound fine.

So this won't be limited to just USA and Canada? Going Global?

yes but europeans are only paired up with other europeans. There isnt any shipping overseas

I'm in if I don't have to deposit.

For real though, if your heart isn't in it or you don't have the money DO NOT FUCKING JOIN.

I still motion to cap the value at $50. I wouldn't spend more than that and I have a full time job. If I spent like $30 and got someone a sick hat and they sent me over $100 worth of shit, I'd feel like a shitstain.

I got someone a jiberish puffeh vest and a pair of murdered electric goggles one year. If I can do it, nobody's gonna stop me from makin' it rain on bitchez. That's all I'm sayin.

God dammit Huck. Some of us have addictions.

I'm opposed to a cap. Some people literally just have stuff laying around that has a value of a lot more than $50 but to them it's free to give it to someone who will be stoked on it. Some people just have money. Last year the gift I gave was well over $200 in value and I was thrilled to give it.

Basically, if you have money to spend, you shouldn't feel bad about getting a gift that didn't cost much. Don't spend $50 if you're going to be bummed about a $10 gift.

What I will say, is if you are not going to put any thought into it or package it poorly so it doesn't arrive safely... then you shouldn't send a gift. A terrible cartoon crayon drawing of my profile picture in a dollar-store frame shipped safely in a bubble mailer would bring me more joy than a gift that someone put 0 thought into.

When you fill out the survey, try to think of cheap things you would be stoked on. Maybe your dorm room is entirely lackluster and you could use some new posters. Virtually any ski shop has a surfeit of posters and will hand them over for free. A $5 mail tube later and you have 10 new posters and hopefully a super nice message/letter about how he went to 3 different shops to find x y and z.

A lot of good ideas on here. I am down for whatever needs to be done to keep the Secret Santa going!

We could also look at a minimum year and post count. Let us say 2 years and 100 posts or something? It shows they are active and may care about being banned.

Either way.. I am in, even with a deposit.

If you smoked more than I do, I'd be impressed and disgusted at the same time haha

Fwiw I couldn't do that last year tho, but I still hooked it up with a sick Level 1 package. It feels awesome to hook up strangers. Something about it...

Also one year somebody sent someone else weed- and the kid that got it didn't even burn! I was like "WHY GOD, WHYYYYYYYYYYYY???!"

This, if somebody wants to hook up a fellow member and can make it happen, there should be no reason to cap that.

True that

I have a lot of time on my hands.....

Adjustments?

Really wish i could get into it however it goes down. Even though I was just introduced to NS by some friends I am really loving it and am excited for the next few years. I understand not letting new accounts into the SS, but it would be a bummer if i couldn't.

How come people new to it don't get banned?

We can absolutely change it to ban as well... I thought the deposit was so that 1) people still get something and 2) we don't need to ban people.

Do we make it a Ban regardless?

I feel like it works this way, or we do the $20 and ban for everyone including people who have done it.

I just want everyone to get something and be happy. World peace via online ski forums.

I think ban regardless. 20 bucks doesnt excuse you from being pathetic regardless of your tenure.

I like the way it is, I think those of us that have proved we can follow through shouldn't have to pay the deposit. But I think everyone that doesn't send a gift should be banned. Banhammer solves all the issues.

I feel the ban-hammer should be used rather liberally in scenarios like this.

.

Any piece of shit that doesnt send a gift needs to be permabanned, no matter if theyve sent a gift in the past or not.

Looked like an awesome time last year and I'd love to hop in it for this year. A $20 deposit sounds great and I'm in!

So do we permaban everyone who doesn't send, and members who have successfully sent in the past don't require a deposit?

Or do we deposit everyone, ban everyone?
