NS Needs to Adopt a Reddit Style Voting System For Threads

This has probably been brought up before, but a voting system needs to be instated for the forums.

If anyone is not aware, Reddit and similar sites work by having a voting system for each thread and each post. If a thread gets a lot up "upvotes" in a certain time (not sure of the exact algorithm) it appears on the front page. This user created filter brings the good material to the top and lets the countless terrible posts fade into obscurity without even showing up.

There would be an option to see all threads by post date, in this way the hard core NS users control the content that makes it to the front page by being the first to see a post and "upvote" it.

I bring this up because I am spending less and less time on NS because the forums are a mess and finding interesting content is difficult. I think this system also gives the users of the site a lot more control and encourages participation.

Is there any reason anyone wouldn't support this change to the forums?

im not familiar with reddit but you can still see threads in the order they are now, correct?

i know you sort of adressed this but as i said before im not familiar with reddit

Ya there is an option to see them sorted based on last post or when the thread itself is posted. The guys who browse the "New" material are kind of like user moderators called by some "The Knights of New Reddit". NS already has this established hierarchy of members who have high karma ratings and browse the new threads.

The higher your karma rating the more powerful your "upvote" is. This keeps trolls from getting a spam thread on the front page.

Reddit is Reddit, chans are chans, NS is NS. It's good to have some variety on the Internet.

The thread/post filter system sounds good, though.
 
I'm sure there are far more nsers that aren't just 15 year old post whores that lurk around and would actually appreciate seeing more threads that aren't just memes and bullshit, not that there isn't a time and place for that. I've never been to Reddit though, so I'm not exactly sure what the voting system is like.
 
I guess I also should have posted this in site discussion, but that is kind of the problem as well.

There would be one forum front page that would include threads from every category. You could still go into the individual forums but if you wanted to you could browse all the good threads on NS on one page whether they be ski relate, site discussion, media and arts, they would all show up based on merit not simply on the time of the last post.

This also keeps kids from bumping threads from 2007 with 3 posts in them (unless they have merit and are voted for in the new section.)
 
I disagree. I feel that the most upvoted threads would be stupid ones, because they make people chuckle. and of you go on reddit at all, you know that the whole damn thing refreshes every couple hours. and anyway, the last thing ns needs is to be more like reddit.
 
to whoever mentioned bumps: it doesn't allow bumps at all. sure you wont be able to bump threads from 2001, but you can't bump threads from the day before either.
 
Well the thread would be bumped into the new section and the users who patrol the new section would have the option of upvoting it to get it on the front page.
 
Now this thread is in site discussion where it will die. This is exactly what is wrong with the NS forums.
 
I don't think that's what is wrong with NS, more so that much of the community is interested in little more than NSG or SG. A lot of users could care less about the topics posted in this forum, but I don't think that means we should get rid of them.
 
I can see the all timmy walnuts who is your favorite pro front page now. While rating edits and picsoffers some feedback as to whether others thought of it.

Rating people, threads and posts is a waste of time and the effort to put such a system in place when there are so many what I see as easier fixes is also a waste of time. what matters to one is wasted bandwith to another.

and like the karma system it doesnt work with insecure people who need that gold star atta boy or need to feel like their post has value.
 
Everything in your post is wrong. Go to any website that uses this system and the content and user involvement is superior to NS in every way.
 
What sense does that make? I like skiing, that content is not on other websites. Just trying to suggest ways to make it better. The way threads are organized makes no sense and there is a better way of doing it.

Why don't you go be a dick head somewhere else?

bullshit there are a bunch of skiing&fishing websites/forums out there none of them use a waste of time rate this system and a whole heck of a lot of em have a bit better content and some even magically have very little or no moderation.

Shit when the tammy nutwall fanclub got all butt hurt about the steezy dressup thread in maggotland first thing they did was start rating the thread 0 or 1 thread not knowing that no one there ever bothers to rate shit there

. Ratings are popularity contests and a way for people who when confronted with the stupidity of there of their posts can rate your post down to ease the butthurt.

and quoting post for the sake of quoting posts with +k or QTF is soy either explain why you feel that way or somehow expand on that or just add ^^^strong post with your hopefully useful funny or in some other way containing merit

Now scamper on back to your better content, user interactions, M4M web sites and start rating things

This. What NS is using now is very simple and easy to understand. Th threads that people want to see are still on the front page because they are the ones that will be bumped.

Tgrs changed a bit since 04 and summers a bit different more political than winter but basically good shit tends to rise to the top by choice of the masses. There is a reason that threads are on page one and its not because rabid pro worshipin fan boys are rating it #1
