NS Longboarders, please read

A few days ago, I was cruising down a decent hill, going probably around 20 to 25 mph, when all four wheels slid out and I took a spill. Lots of road rash and bumps and bruises, but nothing serious (though I wasn't wearing a helmet.) However, it was definitely enough of a wake up call to make me realize that it's pretty stupid to be bombing hills without a helmet, considering how easy it is to wear one.

When I got back inside, I got a phone call telling me about a kid who went to my high school, who I had hung out with several times and was a ski buddy of mine. He was longboarding at night, without a helmet, and got hit by a golf cart, his head cracked on the pavement, and died in the hospital. He was young, and his death is so unexpected and tragic. He didn't deserve it in any way.

I guess the message I'm try to give is that despite that helmets might not look cool, and they might seem bothersome, they do save lives. It's not worth it to risk your life, when by doing something so simple, you can be safe. Casey's death has impacted our community in a terrible way, and yesterday's graduation found us all with a bittersweet taste in our mouths. May he rest in peace.

thats an awful story, condolences to friends and family of his. I always wear a helmet longboarding. I know kids who don't when they bomb hills. All it takes is one fall.

RIP. I don't wear a helmet when I'm just cruising around, but if I'm hitting any hills, I always strap on my brain bucket.

RIP friend, so sad. I hate hearing awful stories like that that could have been easily avoided. wear your helmets, and appreciate every day to the fullest. life's a bitch and then you die

thats so weird, i was just going to make a thread very similar to this, almost identical actually. ive never worn a helmet doing anything, but just bought one for longboarding. also, slide gloves can reduce your road rash by a million percent. i highly recomend making a pair as well.

yeah I know of one person that has died longboarding..and another in a coma right now. my friend sam has actually been hit by a car too, but they just drove off, and the dents in the car were larger than any damage done to sam.

Just got my first longboard (actually, first skateboard ever!) and love it!Not that good yet so yes, I wear my Capix every time I ride hills....definitely a must.
Question: how do i build slide gloves? If i'm not actually doing slide maneuvers yet, what about just wearing some pipe gloves for protection? or would they just get shredded in the event of a hands-down crash?

Pipe gloves would more than likely get shredded. For slide glove I just got a pair of work gloves and hot glued pieces of plastic cutting board to them.

Good thread. I've never worn a helmet longboarding even bombing hills but I think I might finally start. I hate hearing about these kinds of things.

this is a great thread.

actually just last night iwas boarding down a big hill near my house and it was getting dark. i was doing my normal carves but it was hard to see the cracks in the road and i almost fell twice while carving because i was hitting the cracks hard. Anyways i ended up bombing it down the hill to the bottom without being able to stop and i hit the curb and flew 10 feet down the grass but fortunately i'm ok.

I'm going to wear a helmet from now on.

agree with op, learned this the hard way a few days ago. i was pretty drunk and decided to go cruising around with no helmet.. ended up hitting a rock and eating shit pretty bad and had to stay in the hospital overnight. its been 3 days since and i can not taste or smell anything still, so i agree always wear a helmet. even if your going for a cruise..

From what i know, capix are not the best helmets for protecting.

As to the op, vibes, i always wear my helmet.

I don't wear a helmet when I ski, but I do when I bomb hills. First time I bombed a hill I was drunk as shit and when I woke up the next morning I had like dried blood in my hair from taking a crack to the dome. It was fun as shit though so the next day I ordered a longboard, but I've never since bombed a steep hill without a helmet. Any time I'm going to be breaking 20mph I gotta have one. (20mph is the max speed I can safely jump off a board and run my speed out so I'm not really worried until I break that.)
Kinda funny actually because I bought a helmet for skiing but I only use it to longboard so I just bomb hills in a Giro Shiv.

I've never had any serious head slams (besides skiing, and I DO wear a helmet) But I ALWAYS wear a helmet when I step on a board. Putting a helmet on is too easy to not do, and it could save your life when you least expect it.

I have a friend who bombs hills without a helmet. It's scary.

helmets are important, but i think alot of people overshadow the fact that you shouldn't longboard at night, or while drinking, and you should never do anything that you know you can't handle. Because theres a point where even a helmet isn't going to save you.

Im still shaken up about casey, RIP buddy, I picked up my longboard from my parents house going back to p burgh, got there heard the news and havent touched the thing...Crazy to think how easy it could have been me or any number of people on so many other occasions...

Nah dawg I do most of my longboarding at night while intoxicated. Best way to get home from the bar haha. Plus you know if hills are REALLY scary then a little bit of alcohol in my system will stop my legs shaking from adrenaline overload.

I used to bomb quite a bit, with my piece of shit homemade deck and no name trucks. Never wore a helmet cause my hair (a didn't look good in one and (b didn't fit

Now that I have a short haircut, I always wear it bombing, but never cruising, because I use my board for point A to point B stuff, and getting home from parties and fires.

+vibes, and sorry about your friend though dude.

Here's what I did.

Went to Home Depot, went to the countertop sections, asked for 6 pieces of Corian, they gave them to me for free. Went to the work gloves section, bought some nice gloves. Went to the velcro area, got 4ft x 2inch industrial strength velcro. Went home, put velcro on palm of gloves, then on one side of Corian, put them together. Then I put a piece of velcro on the fingers, connecting pinky and ring. Then another piece of velcro on the Corian, repeat for all other places. Pretty easy actually.

haha, thats my buddy brian bishop! i ride with him and the owners of original once a week. buy original, they have a TON of new products coming out that are going to be revolutionary.

next year. original is one of the few companys to use springs, most use bushings. they new ones droping next year you can choose one or the other.

wow, thats not right. I hate hearing about things like this, if he had been 2 feet further back or something or had worn a helmet he'd probably be ok. +vibes to you, his friends and his family

i could never live with the guilt of being the guy driving that golf cart.

^hit and run too, the guy must be a dirtbag. Havent been in town much so i dont know whats happened in the last few days

Yeah, and he lied to the cops, said that he was lying down when there were two eyewitnesses that knew he was just riding normally. I'm sure he was drunk, there's no other reason to leave when someone's lying on the ground. I hope karma fucks that guy, and soon.

I went to the wake today, and everyone is so shook up from it. It's such an awful thing for the family; but I'm really glad I got to go pay my respects.

i almost hope he was drunk just so i can believe that no clear minded human would do that.

I read this last night...and today one of my really good friends, who taught me a lot of what I know now about longboarding took an awful fall and is now on life support with a cracked skull...there is a good chance he'll never wake up. I'm still kind of shocked, and horrified. I hate it when uggly tragedies happen in the sports I love so much, its just terrible. I haven't wrapped my head around whats happened just yet, but I know tomorrow i'm buying a helmet. people really should stop all the bitching about how they look. i'm done playing invincible.

helmets and slide gloves are just common sense.. you're going fast over pavement just above it. No protective gear is just stupid.. if you're riding at night LED lights and flashy shit is a good idea too. come on guys.

RIP. A buddy of mine was just cruising on his longboard and then he slipped and cracked his skull. survived, but lost his sense of smelling and it coulda been avoided if he whore a helmet.

i hate reading shit like this cuz i know im never gunna wear a helmet longboarding

+vibes to your frineds family but -vibes to you for givin me - vibes

jesus that's scarey.
my brother and i go out a bunch, and he wears a helmet cause he goes hard
he also has a drop board, as I have a battleaxe ( meant for carving )
I do brake a lot, but i guess I'll throw a helmet on just in case, better safe than sorry i guess.
