Hey NSers, newfoolers, and humans!,

I am working on a project in which I compile 8 songs on a CD in response to the question:What's going on in America? Not my favorite question either, but I'm doing my best.

My thesis thus far is: Americans have lost track of a proper balance between work and play, this has contributed to statistical poor health in many areas of well being- from obesity to depression.

What do you think of the thesis? Reword? Start over? I'm also having trouble finding songs to illustrate this argument. Any suggestions? Movies that back this up would be helpful as well? Any and all suggestions are genuinely appreciated and will be reciprocated with hugs and candy bars.

i don't think i would be asking for thesis advice from the NS community

in saying that, i think the topic is definitely a real issue which could definitely be explored further

thanks for the feedback dude. i guess what i'm most concerned with is coming up with songs to illustrate this idea. since 12332452 heads are better than one, and you NSers do have, generally, rich knowledge of music and film i thought id enlist your help. again, hugs and candy bars.

Agreed. do:

War -Bob Marley

Guns dont argue-Dilliner

Land of Confusion-Gensis

ect. I cant think of anymore right now but its a start.

That sounds like a reasonable topic. You could very easily do the whole thing with Country Western songs.

Yeah......I don't really think there's many songs that deal with that directly. The only songs I can think of that really pertain specificallyl to American culture are "Aenima" and "Stinkfist" by Tool. It seems to me most songs address personal or psychological issues rather than socio/cultural ones, so maybe switching your thesis to something more along those lines would help out.

are you serious right meow?!?! that song isnt about a single thing he said.its about not snitching on your homies or your enemies. not quite the blurred line between work and play.

thanks dudes. yes, i realise that there are few songs (if any?) that deal with this idea directly, some analysis is needed. as a backup thesis, I am considering something along the lines of the prevalence of skepticism/criticism about American government reflecting how strong of a state America is in; that we can and are critical of our government is the mark of strength and that the ideals on which America was founded still live in its people. Something like that.

hmm that's actualy tougher than it sounds...

How about Pranging Out - The Streets

oh and Dont stop believing by Journey...you could use that song for any thesis you come up with.

Thank you all so much. I appreciate all the feedback, it was all extremely helpful. I'll post the final track listing once I'm done. It's been a fun project and my teacher is a big hip hop fan so that will be an influence. Also, I rock hairblaster, holden, and seth pistols so call me out on the hill and ill give you a hug and a candy bar (probably twix, snickers, or snickers with almonds).

My thesis is: The US is working so hard to "help" everyone else and make them "democratic" and steal their oil that they don't realise that their own country is falling apart from the inside out. They talk about instilling democracy but with the Prez's veto power they're not getting any.

That's my view as an outsider.
