NS, help me understand

As a fairly new member of the site, I wanted to ask some simple questions in regards to the park skiing community today. I enjoy a park lap just as much as the next guy, but I honestly dont understand this whole "thug steeze" culture that's been circulating the industry lately. All of these kids (cough FD cough) are literally trying to be thug and then they mask it with the whole "oh, we're just having fun" excuse which all you kids seem to eat right up. Do you think that some of these kids are dressing all thugged out in the park and making edits to ridiculously gangsta songs just because they are joking around and having fun with it? They honestly think that they can dress like that just because they can stomp tricks and look stylish while skiing. I really just don't get what's going on and how a whole community of people within one of the whitest/upscale sports industries can think that they are ghetto. Don't you guys realize that the pioneers of our sport are looking at the whole park scene in disgust because of this right now? And I'm not even talking about the big mountain dudes, but also a couple of guys that were on the forefront of park skiing a few years back.I also was reading some arguments in regards to Henrik Harlaut and how he thinks he's black. Kids defend it by saying "its freeskiing man, we're free to do whatever we want." Yeah, I understand that, but out of all of the directions you could take your skiing style/persona, why the fuck would you take it toward Ol Dirty Bastard and Wu Tang? People need to realize that when people see that shit on the big screen, it looks fucking retarded. And I know, "who cares how people see us", right? Well maybe not all of us are 14yo hardcore NSers who cream over "E-Dollo and B-Dog". I guess it's just the idea of how delusional alot of kids are and how they convince themselves that this is okay that amazes me. I realize this thread is going to bring a ton of hate my way, and I'm sorry if it sounds meaner than it actually is, I'm honestly not trying to start anything, I just want to gain some insight from different sides on what everyone thinks about this since I'm pretty intrigued/amazed by this cute little epidemic.

It is a winter recreation activity. Therefore its for everyone to do it how they want. Whatever it takes for you to have fun recreating is fine. There's no rules when it comes to having a good time. Something that makes sense to you may be ridiculous and stupid to someone else.

I SMOKE CHRONIC AND GANGSTERS SMOKE THE CHRONIC. THATS MY MAIN INSPIRATION IN SKIING SO I MODEL MY STYLE AFTER SAID GANGSTERS EASY BITCHES

I feel like the same could go for any sport. Is it more practical to play golf in shorts and a t shirt? Maybe. Wearing XXXXL clothes may not be very practical either, but that's the way it is in the park for some guys. More power to them.

Whats wrong with Wu-Tang?

But seriously

I may not like the 'thug' steeze but whatever i just laugh to myself and keep having a good time, I do enjoy rap and I think rap as culture gets a knock for being bad or dirty when its not, but thats for another discussion. if your not having fun because someone is wearing different clothing than you play baseball.

Dressing in baggy clothing and listening to gangsta music makes us feel cool. and therefore since we think we are cool, then we are cool.

just think of it this way; in the business world, when poeple dress formally, they have very expensive suits, ties, shoes, etc. and they do this to represent themselves. it is to show others that they are serious about what they do. it is also an internationally accepted dress atire to wear that isnt even that comfortable. if you don't have a fancy suit and tie on at an important meeting you will be seen as a joker. why is this? why dont people accept others if they are not "properly dressed"? well I cant answer that question, but I do know that us freeskiers don't care that others dress differently from us. it is the way we represent ourselves to our peers and it may not be "publicly accepted" to people who are in the freeskiing community, but that shouldn't mean anything. why is dressing up so accepted? again I have no idea but I do know if I saw a person in a suit and tie on the slopes I would think that the person is a little strange, (and yet I would think to each his own) I am sure that is how the public sees us and that may or may not be a problem depending on how your perspective is. and sure there are some jerks out there who make fun of people that dont dress like freeskiers, but then again I am more than positive that important business tycoons do the same to somoene who is in some jeans and a t-shirt. If you don't really understand the freeskiing culture, then just look at something like dress atire, because unlike formal wear and see how that became accepted, freeskiing is still in its teenage years of developing and becoming publicly recognized. so instead of questioning it, support it

i think two skiing thugs double penetrated the OPs girl...

seriously though, it is a way for people to fit into something.. shouldn't be anything wrong with it

Who looks at disgust to park skiers? For wearing a 3XL shirt because they like the style seems fine to me. Most extreme sports have a sort of style based around them, not particularly is skiing "gangster" but it has its own style. Why do skateboards wear tight jeans and flat brims?

Sorry, Mr. Ambassador of "the pioneers of our sport", but they're not, so no, we don't realize that. Now kindly, shut the fuck up, and get off this website.

with FD and the friday edits i think it actually is about having fun. it's pretty obvious they aren't being 100% serious, the whole milk-tits thing is an example of that. They know the response they are going to get, and they use it sort of as an advertising joke. the edits are meant to be funny, not serious. and skiing has just evolved into what it is. in a couple years, the style may be entirely different. I personally hate rap, but i do like the style of skiing. I have never met a kid that looks "thug" while skiing and genuinely thinks he is thug outside of the sport. it's the style, and if you don't like it, it may not be permanent, so don't worry

Honestly dude, it is what it is. you clearly dont know very much about the pioneers of our sport because they all ski with these thugs you hate on and have a damn good time doing it. just chill out a little and have some fun. oh, and another thing: the wu-tang clan aint nothin to fuck with homie

It's like how all style comes from; cause its considered cool or acceptable in his/her's community or affiliation. Like if you break down a collared preppy kid's shirt, its just a piece of cloth, Why wear it? Cause it is what looks ''good'' and accepted within that persons peer's views. Thats why people are thug.

the more you know

I think it's partly because we don't want to look like traditional skiers or racers, so we go with the baggy look, I am seeing hesh creep its way in, though.

Fuck u OP kids like u are ruining this sport freeskiing came to be because a couple of guys wanted to differentiate themselves and be original. They wanted people to know they didn't give a fuck and just wanted to have fun. Yah most freeskier wear baggy ski gear because they want to be different and put themselves apart from fucks like u. And about the music first of all it sounds good and second of all it makes u feel cool to act like a black person and skiing is the only legal way to do it. So shut up OP or get the fuck off this website.

Wow. With how retarded you sound, your Armada logo, and you being from Maine, I can just imagine what you are like in person. Congrats.

I like how you chose to reply to the ONLY stupid response in this thread. Please reply to parkplayground's post, and then we can talk.

I never wanted to argue with anyone. As I stated in my initial post, I just wanted to sit back and hear some different perspectives on it. However, if some jerkoff comes at me with the whole "fuck you man you're ruining our sport" argument, then I feel like some type of response is necessary.

So, you're saying that stupid posts get a response, but logical, well thought out arguments don't?

I take that to be a sign that you actually cannot back up your initial argument, and that the initial argument is wrong.

Seems like the baggy thugged out style is only really prominent in the U.S. I hardly ever see those Scandinavian kids with quadruple xl outerwear.

For one thing, that "gangsta music" actually happens to be some of the best music around discluding all of the Flocka being thrown around. Also, there is a huge portion of this site that doesn't take the XXL route and goes for as skinny as possible or takes a tailored approach. In regard to my music comment, there are still people who ski and listen to country and rock. Spend more time on the site before you make a judgement bub.

For the same reason that some people prefer to structure their thought process into paragraphs, and others prefer a giant dizzying wall of text that when you stare at it, you want to regurgitate.

personaly i perfer the baggier clothing while skiing it lets me be a little more flexible, some people prefer to dress like that, so what the fuck. let them dress the way they want. im sure if everyone dressed like a damn hippie and played music from the 60s there would be a problem with that to. deal with it man

OP, if you don't understand, you're not going to. Trends happen, and baggy happens to be one of many current trends in freeskiing. Baggy does not have to correlate with 'thug,' people like you just automatically make that connection. If you have quotes, rumors, anything backing up your claim that the forerunners of park skiing are in disapproval of us little thugs progressing the sport, please present it immediately or you have no ground to stand on.

heres my outlook on things. I've been skiing my whole life and was taught that the crown jewl of skiing were steep, powdery, glades. I became obsessed with skiing when I was 11 and dreamed of places like Mad River Glen, Tuckerman's Rivine, etc. So last season (I was 14) I joined NS and started to pick up freestyle and I agreed, yes the whole thug thing is really stupid. That is my opinion. The reality of it is that freestyle skiing was built around the idea of freedom from older stricter forms of skiing. So keeping true to our roots, we should be able to wear whatever we want. Me personally I wear a nice well fitted North Face, with khaki colored snowpants all fitted "Traditionally". But anyway, I think freeskiers should wear whatever they want (even though I agree I think it's very stupid the whole thug thing) but that's just my thoughts.

Peace

Oh, God, how many times? Wearing baggy stuff doesn't mean that you pretend to be a thug you moron. OP, nobody thinks he's a thug because he wears baggy clothes and neither does Henrik think he's black. OP, you should really check yourself because you sound retarded

Who cares what people ski in, Baggy or not, were all out there for the same thrill and if I wanna sag my pants and wear a tall t to be comfortable, you dont have too!

I really think E-Dollo and B-Dog (other and older pro skiers too) are influencing our way of skiing, we see them as really good skiers, plus they have a cool attitude and are stylish, it's normal for skiers to try to be like them, it's like that in every sport. Personally, I have adopted that baggy style, and I like it, I know i'm being influenced, but that's part of being an amateur, looking at the pros and admirating their skills and style. Of course some are too influenced, like people who can't do a box but have tees that go past their knees and think they are cool just because they look like the guy who did a nosebutt triple. For the music, I feel like some exagerate a bit, but it can also be verry influencing while skiing, music can also be a passion, so you try to mix it up with skiing as well.

I will try and answer this question as best as possible. My justification of the baggy clothes is that first i hate tight clothing. Tight ass shirts (i'm not even gonna get into skinny jeans 'insert big dick joke') feel gay and make you look like a tool. So i don't like wearing tight clothes while i ski. Second tight clothes are more restricting to movements for tricks and such. Third baggy clothes personally make me feel loose and when doing any sport staying loose promotes more athletic maneuvers and less injuries. Fourth everyone knows its all about what you look like when you ski and 'steeze' is in so if your looking good then your feeling good, good things happen. I would say that the baggy clothes are kinda going out right now. Not as crazy as it was a few years ago.
