NS DJ Contest!

I was thinking last night, that since so many people on here are apparently aspiring DJs, why not have a friendly competition amongst them all?

rules:

mix can be of any genres you desire.

mix must be between 10 and 15 minutes long.

email your mixes to NSDJContest@gmail.com with your username and DJ contest in the subject line.

at the end of the week, I will take all of the mixes, upload them to soundcloud or another site, and then set up a poll that will be open for a week or so of voting, then BAM, we have a winner.

prize will be bragging rights and maybe an e-cookie or plate of e-cookies.

if this one pans out, we could have future contests that would have specific challenges, like genre, or remixes, etc..

Thoughts?

10-15 minutes? This isn't the DMC and no one here is Q-Bert. Make it longer and I'll go all Norman Cook on you punks.

nobody on here is going to listen to anything longer than that and going to be able to make a decision, they'll have forgotten the previous mixes by then. 15 minutes gives you time to work between 4-10 songs depending on how you mix.

I thoguht about this thread last year.

We should all vote for the desired song to mix.

10 and 15 minutes seems a bit riciculous.

maybe more of a 1-3 minute re edit?

Whats it called when you make your own drums, bassline, synths.

and add them to an already created song?

or just throw in dubs???

^sounds better to me.

this is a dj contest. you can't just throw something together over garage band.

also, i say video of your mix so nobody can cheat

take this and your other post and put them back in your mouth because you have no idea whats goin on in here.
i have stipulations, i am in college and dont have my real decks with me, limiting my performance to Traktor LE and my midi. its not really fair if im going up against someone on Trak Pro or Serato. also is this supposed to be a mix of whatever the fuck you want? cuz i know kids here would like 25 minutes of jah rasta screamin his ass off but not 5 minutes of spacy Loné.

how? you record a 15 minute mix. then you post it. then people pick which one they like most. i dont see whats gay about it at all.
you dont seem to understand what the word "mix" means in this thread. what the OP shouldve said was a 15 minute "set". we're not talking about a mash-up that is incorrectly labeled as a "mix". youre not a DJ if youre a mash-up artist. you CAN be a DJ as well as a mash-up artist, but if youre only doing mash-ups youre not a DJ. yadidimsayin?

good call, 15 minute SET. and I was just ignoring brosicle because I assumed he was trolling.

well this isn't a production contest... but I can organize one as well if you want. find me a song that's split into stems and we can have an NS remix contest.

a single song is 3-4 minutes long. if you dj. you play multiple songs?

i dont get it the point here?

are you looking for mash-ups and remix's or something?

Yea that's a much better contest.

I think we should just vote on the song, I have no idea where to find songs split into parts, or even good dubs.

But you'll get a lot more feedback if you do this.

Trying to put together a bunch of tracks within a few minutes doesn't make anyone a great DJ unless you're a turntablist. Yeah, it's your contest and you can do whatever you want, but what makes a DJ great goes FAR beyond that. But what the hell do I know ... I've only been doing it for about 10 years now, had a radio show, and a few gigs in NYC.

Nah. I play mostly deep house and there isn't a scene here, at least not that I know of. Plus, I would hate to get sucked into a weekly preventing me from doing shit early on the weekends or making it to work on time. It was fun when I had no responsibilities and could piggy-back on my friends' parties.

Did you see Dixon's set at Electric Zoo? It was some quality deepness! Where have you played and are some of your sets online?

Wasn't at EZ although I know of the people behind it. Used to play a place called Sin Sin in the EV and some early sets at Sullivan Room. I still collect vinyl but it's been a bitch lately since so many tracks are going straight to MP3. Juno is still a great site, but dancerecords.com has been long gone for a while now. Guess I'm that jaded old fuck now who misses having a regular dnb night, a regular breaks night, a regular deep house night, a regular techno night, etc etc.

jesus this shouldn't be this complicated people.
make a set under 15 minutes.
not a song, this is no production shit, unless you've already produced tracks to put into your set, then all good.
send it to the email, then wait. op's doing most of the work here, appreciate it and send an entry...

Wow, you played at Sullivan Room? Even if its the opening set, quite impressive. I'm actually going to be up there on the 2nd to see Jeff Mills play...I'm quite excited!

Hell yeah, Jeff is great for sure. Just checked and sure enough some old acquaintances are throwing that party. Sully was my go-to spot. Once left there at 9am New Year's Day and there was still a line of 50+ people waiting to get in.

Now back to your normally schedule DJ contest ...
