NS Brain Trust

I've got my senior seminar class starting this week, I need to design and build something to take it as far as I can in 10 weeks (length of the semester). I'd like to have it do with skiing so I don't have a boring ass project to work on all semester. I have some ideas such as redesigning the pole basket to make it easier to get out of the binding or a chair lift trash can to cut down on littering. Throw me a freakin bone here and lemme know what product interfaces annoy you what you think needs changing it would be greatly appreciated.

Crowd sourcing ideas for the culmination of your entire college career is kind of plagiarism ... right?

Simpsons already did it?

No, but it's relatively easy. The problem is the inside of the pole might not be safe to store a drink in. You can get some quite complex chemistry occurring when you factor in the alcohol and salts dissolved in the drinks, and you can certainly make toxic chemicals if you have the wrong container. Don't think "oh it's metal, it's safe".

A biodegradable pole grip that I can plant at the end of the year and some skunk ass dank ass will grow out of it.

Would make for a dope end of the year ritual.

How about a ski pole that have lock your skis into the ski rack while you're getting lunch

Seriously considering this as a ski pole redesign, make it a locking pole mechanism that would have to lock to your skis or the ski rack.

Safe and removale ski and/or boot bling.

Removable so you can leave skis outside without worrying. Safe so they don't have any sharp edges to cut somebody. Also has to be light (to not affect skiing) and inexpensive.

Hell, maybe just some transparent, mountable ski pocket to put anything inside.

Wait, maybe the bling could be fitted to a gopro mount.

Personally I like YOUR idea of a chairlift trash can. Just think about how many times peoplea are snacking, eating, rolling a doobie etc. on the chairlift and how often they just dump their trash from the chairlift. This shit really bothers me and sometimes I even find myself picking up trash from the slopes and putting it in a trash can on the bottom of the run just because I hate trash and waste on and in the mountains.

A smart, minimalistic design that has enough space for the trash of a day and could be connected to the saftey bar for instance would be a good idea in my eyes.

Keep the mountains clean!

go ahead, make it, market it, make billions.

Then I'm suing you for stealing my intellectual property.

as a product designer, I really think you are doing yourself a disservice asking for others ideas on you senior project. YOU need to be creative. Come up with your own idea, and keep it INCREDIBLY simple. you really don't know how much work goes into even the most basic products. Plus if it is simple you can actually go all the way through the process and get a real result, instead of just fluff. plus the pole idea has been rehashed over and over and over again. think harder. a trashcan might actually be simple enough, but its large and will be problematic to do quickly and inexpensively.

I think your idea is the best one on here! Honestly. It's super simple and reasonable. This will probably impress your teacher more than some pole modification because it shows care for the environment. It could really make a difference in our mountains. Keep em clean!

I always thought a cool thing would be to have a compartment in the grips that you put drill bits in, and have the bottom of the pole (tip?) be a place to but those bits in and then you have a screwdriver. Fix your binding on the go

I really like this idea, but not on the safety bar... as soon as you lift it up to get off the lift, the trashcan would tip and dump all the trash out behind you

I made something years ago, but you are welcome to the idea.

I made something to help teach beginners how to load and unload the chairlift. I built a bench and attached old skis to it. I put it at the top of a small hill. I could gently push beginning skiers and boarders up to the top of the hill, they could stand up and ski off simulating unloading a lift, but without the stress and you could talk them through it. I could move it over to a flat area and push it forward behind them so they got the feeling of looking to the outside, grabbing the bar and sitting down. It sounds goofy but it worked really well. Supervisors from other areas, came over and took pictures of it so they could make their own. Unfortunately I don't have any photos. PM me if you want more detail.

Yeah i like the trash can idea. Maybe make one you can bolt onto a the side of chairlift opposite to the tower?

My 2 cents in the lift garbage can idea:

Make them efficient and empty at the top of the runs or somewhere. Like, once the people are off, the garbage cans (on both sides) will tip forwards and dump the garbage into a dumpster or something. This way, they wouldn't fill up

CONS: people may not want dirty garbage bins next to them while riding up a lift. The dumping thing at the top would have to be bag-less, so people might throw like gum in there or something and it could get bad

One of my local hills just puts trash cans at the poles on the ground. They are mainly used for bottles and heavier stuff. but ypu are just supposed to toss it from the lift and make it in. as long as you get close its good though, because they rake around it and pick up the misses at night.

Makes for a fun game too.

This is true advice thank you so much! I've been developing a couple ideas for homework the first few weeks of class, and will heed this knowledge. It helps to have a community like NS to bounce ideas around I'll keep ya updated
