i like the idea if its for pictures and videos,

if its for a thread like the lets see your whips or scene girls thread

a notification after some time might get annoying if your on of the very first posters in a 20+ page thread

NOT threads. If you made a multipage thread like chadsgap, you would gets tons of notifications and it would just piss you off.

As part of the whole 'make it optional' thing....maybe instead you could choose what you wanted to receive notifications on. Like, maybe I just want to know when my pictures and blog are commented on, you know?

I'm going to take all the ideas in this thread that I like and give you my overall idea of what I'd like to see happen.
-Have a notifications feature-have it be optional... as in you can turn it on or off just like the fancy editor or whatever it's called-if it is on, be able to select certain items to receive notifications on. A little box that you could check mark would work perfectly. Check all the boxes that you want to receive a notification for. For example, check the boxes that say picture comment, video comment, but leave out blog comments and feedback comments.

oh and one more thing...
-you can have it enabled so you can receive notifications on both your pictures/videos/etc and other pictures/videos/etc that you comment on, or just things you comment on, or just your own pictures/videos/etc.
I think with those things covered, the people who want the feature would love it, and the people who don't want to receive notifications don't need to worry because they can simply disable the feature.

so you could pick if you wanted notifications on
Pictures
Videos
Threads
or whatever

Just make it completely customizable per user

It would still be nice if you could just look at a notification, click it, and it would take you too the point in the thread where the person quoted you, although generally I look through the whole thread anyways...

You can turn the email notifications off in account settings. There's a link at the bottom of every email to manage your notification settings.
