THIS WAS NOT ME!!

sorry had to clear that up. but anyways so i was eating lunch in the lodge and i over heard this kid behind me(and mid you this kid's not a total nub, hes actually a really good overall skier, he used race and all) talking to his friends about whatever and he says "I don't like skiing powder" and i almost turned around and "POW! RIGHT IN THE KISSER!"-ed him, but i didnt.

so what im trying to say is, does anyone not enjoy skiing powder? im not here to hate on you, im just wondering, because everyone i know jizzes their pants when then get to ski that amazing fluff...

I think the people that say stuff like that are the ones that don't have the proper skis for powder. They don't enjoy it because they are sinking and can't get through the stuff. It's a nightmare if you don't have the right set up. So instead of getting a proper powder ski, they prematurely judge powder skiing as what they first experienced and miss out on something so great. But I like it that way, more untracked powder for us!

huh idk about that, because i just had fugitives last year and they would sink really bad, but skiing pow was still the best feeling ever. in a way i actually like sinking down, if your on a steep enough slope. i like the feeling of snow going up to my knees

I don't know about that... MDMA is some serious shit, especially power form. But I've only ever gotten to ski like shin-deep power so who knows. That would be pretty radical.

Pow really doesnt come around these parts to often but when it does I love it I could ski it non stop forever

Yeah try some chest deep colorado snow, bro. Not quite the same, but that same feeling of every aspect of life being absolutely incredible for that moment.

soryy for the double post but wtf dude? the right skis?

do you think people in the 80s had hellbents? no they were ripping pow on 195 70mm waist skis

I really hope someone bans your ass soon.

On a positive note. I have never been happier skiing than when I ski powder. Those are the days I live for. I love riding park but powder is on a whole other level.

wrong. did people not enjoy powder back in trevor petersen and glenn plakes day? they aint got fat skis then. its because kids these days dont learn to ski, and its a fact. kids jump into the park super early now, they rip it in there, but suck at skiing. iv seen some sick young skiers in nz do 1440s, then a pow day comes and they riding back seat coz they cant turn

Sup OG???

If you don't like skiing powder you are obviously not doing it right and/or should get something more suitable than your 160 scratch FSs.

hahahaha wow. i had no idea that me stating my personal preferences would make so many people mad, sad, and confused. i'm sorry if i made you mad and/or sad.
oh and yeah i've skied legit pow ( i live in co).

......alrighty

Skiing deep pow is an amazing feeling, absolutely love any fresh pow. I have gone skiing with park rats in the past though who couldn't handle deep snow for shit (then as a result they rationalize for why they don't like pow).

You gotta admit that most people you come in contact with on the mtn want it easy and aren't really diehard skiers. For most of those people if they don't have a ski that makes it easier to ski pow than they are done with it. I wasn't meaning that you can't ski pow with those other skis.

In most cases if you ask why they don't like pow they will tell you a story of how they kept getting stuck and it was too difficult. It takes a lot more skill and finesse (which "most" of these people don't have) to ride pow on a skinny ski vs something like the hellbent, and therefore it's too much work for them. There whole perception is biased off of there ski choice/skill to accompany said ski. The people ripping pow with 70mm had skill and love of skiing, if you asked weekend warriors to do that they would HATE it. Hell I enjoy pow on any ski I have, even my chronics.

Wrong choice of words on my part, but I was thinking of groomer fodder gapers when I wrote that. The wrong ski choice for THOSE type of people (which make up the majority of people who hate pow).

wow exactly what i was going to say... and i live in utah!

maybe i just need better skis and not ski pow with invaders? no idea i just eat shitt every time and it kinda pissed me off.

i dont like powder, simply because i dont have a the right set up. I can see how it would be loads and loads of fun, unfortunately, my AR6s arent that wide

.I can personally attest to the fact that people were digging powder well before the arrival of shaped skis, much less boards with 100mm+ underfoot.

The technique was different, and involved extending your legs through the initial-phase/outer-radius of the turn, allowing your legs to compress at the bottom of the turn, then unweighting and beginning the extension as you transitioned into the next turn. Find some old-school (as in, before you were born) powder skiing segments on YouTube and you'll see this style in action. I think that there's some footy from "Hot Dog - The Movie" on YT that shows some dudes even older than me ripping it up with the wack post-and-hop powder style.

With fat skis you can pretty much just swoop down powder fields and crank out long, GS style turns about as easily as you can carve your way down groomers. However - just because you don't have a set of fat powder boards doesn't mean that you can't get out and enjoy the snow. At Mammoth last year, I saw dudes in their 70's ripping it up on 200cm*70mm boards.

Try. Fall. Learn. If you can't enjoy powder, don't blame your skis - it's not their fault.

Powder is for losers. Everyone should buy some park ski and spend all their days hitting rails, that would be terrific.

i would ski more park.. but the most "pow" we get where i live is MAYBE like 6 inches deep maximum.. so its beat. i think i would like it if i ever got to experience it though.. haha

true, skiing waste deep on center mounted park skis is really a bitch. If you do it enough you get really strong, and develop your technique, but still I can see why people would say something crazy like that.

Do you guys follow snowboarding very much? I don't know if this is purely a Canadian movement, but I think it is down in the States as well.
There are a handful of pro (and am) snowboarders out there wearing "Powder Sucks!" T-shirts. Almost all of the boarders repping these shirts are in fact urban riders... and it truly piss's me off when I see these shirts... It goes further than this even. Earlier (I can't remember if it was this year or last year) Snowboard Canada wrote a article in their magazine about these "Powder Sucks" t-shirts, and the author sided with the shirt wearers.
His argument wasn't that powder actually sucked, but that the mentality of the pow rider is what ruined powder. From big line ups, to people getting agro about their lines, to the "no friends on a pow day" motto. After reading the article I could see the author's point, but had a hard time truly accepting it as something real.
Sure, people can become dicks when it's a powder day, but at the same time people can become dicks when jockeying for getting to that urban feature before another crew can show up, or booter site, or anything. In my opinion, it's not the kind of snow, or terrain, that you ride that makes people dicks... it's the mentality of the individual rider that determines that vibe of the setting. You get a small group of skiers together on a pow day with no one around to steal their lines and shit would be all time.

Don't hate the powder, hate the powder hound. After all, any skier who actually hates a form of skiing is probably in the sport for something other than the love. Know what I mean?

I love powder more then anything other than ripping a huge tree line. I ride trees and powder with center mounted Anthems. There is no "set up" for pow. Just skis that are more geared towards it. Stop blaming your inability to ski pow on your equipment.

Deep powder is incredably tiring, especially if you have to hike all of your lines! Its even more tiring if you dont have fat skis! ahah but its so fun!

more people should hate pow, Actually everyone should hate it, it's dreadful but I'll take the awful burden of skiing it. just think of it as me stepping up to the plate and taking the dirty job of stopping all that new snow down into hardpack just so you guys can be happyI would be ok with that

Haha, that was kinda the starting of our season here. It was snowing, but it came slow with cold temperatures... eventually we had a entire ski hill of untouched waist deep pow. Problem was, there was no real base, so this waist deep pow was sitting on everything you don't want to snag your skis. If your tips went under at all, odds are you'd snag something and bail.
We had to ski it, for the sake of making a base... It was a sacrifice I was willing to make for everyone else later. Aren't I a nice guy?

well my bro (not too much into freeskiing in general) is ripping pow with 85 underfoot völkl allround skis. and most local skiing teachers arent too much into fat skis since they make it somehow "too easy" to ski pow. for example you dont have to care about your balance tip/tail as much as with "normal" skis.

so they keep riding race skis in powder and í cant say theyre skiing slower or less aggressive than most guys on fat skis.

not liking powder...

that's comparable to not liking sex

if you don't like it then you're either strange, or you're doing it wrong.

But I bet all of there skis are nowhere close to center mounted. It makes a huge difference mounting traditional vs center or close to it when riding pow on a thin ski. It's not impossible to do, but it can make things not so enjoyable depending on the ski and the mount of the ski.......and the length of the ski. I was mainly saying that most people don't enjoy it because it isn't easy with their choice of ski, attitude, and skill in pow. That and nearly all of the people that don't enjoy pow are on 160cm max rental skis. Try riding on a 160cm thin ski and have a really good time in pow. I'm pretty sure it will sort of ruin the experience. You just know better than these people on why they experienced that. They won't go try it ever again based off that one experience.

Most people that sit in a lodge or ride on a chairlift saying that they wished that pow runs were groomed have only tried it once. Therefore they never took the time to learn the technique. If they had a better ski for it, they might not have had such an experience and would have taken the time to learn the technique. The difference is the learning curve, and most people don't want to take the time. And since it's going to take more time learning to ski pow on a thinner ski, they for certain aren't going to like it and take that time.
