Hot take if someone does an unnat switch three I will ski up and say "nice full cab". Sw unnnat 180 is a half cab. Those are the only two times id say cab in skiing.

i can see how "fakie" and "switch" both accurately describe skiing backward. But vast majority of ppl call it switch so it kinda stuck

No no I didn’t mean we as skiers should call it a full cab, I was referring to the origins of the name in skateboarding and how I thought it was because of Steve Cab not Daniel

Skiing backwards is not “switch”, it’s fakie.

If anything, spinning unnatural would be “switch”. Nobody’s natural ski stance is backwards you fools.

“frontslide” isn’t a thing, it’s a fast slide.

Truck driver is really called “rocket”.

Im just scratching the surface. What is stopping us from using the right words to describe tricks??? Do people think skiers invented these things and deserve the right to name them? I’m only 25% trolling, it does irk me because its kinda lame to not know the history

If you want to use the "right words" to describe the act, it's called skiing backwards. But no one who regularly skis backwards wants to call it that, so we will stick to borrowing from board sports/action sports world and call it switch, which universally means riding in opposite of your normal stance

Switch means riding in the opposite of your normal stance. So yes, you are correct nobody's natural riding stance is backwards, which means forward is regular, backward is switch

Fakie is not riding in the opposite stance, it has to do with which end of a skateboard you are popping from vs. direction of travel vs. natural stance.

You cant change where you are positioned on skis or a board, therefore makes way more sense to say switch.

Natural (natty), and Unatural (unatty), are some of the only terms that actually make sense in skiing, and you want to change them to some confusing shit related to skateboarding switch?

you really would rather say i did a Fakie Switch 7 versus saying Switch unatty 7

It's switch, it's not fakie or cab, both are skateboard related terms and don't translate to skiing.

Im a big rollerblader and it translates pretty spot on.... rollerblading backwards is called Fakie.... I disagree with alot of the other term switches OP says but I do think switch should be called Fakie it is literally the only sport (along w/ snowboarding) where this weird random change was made

"Rocket Air: Do a Zutnik then reach down and grab your left ski just in front of the boot, throw in a Twister to make it look even better"

It's not the snowboard trick, nor a truck driver. [can't find a good pic]

As a rollerblader I agree at least about the Fakie vs Switch part..... should defiitley be called fakie..... skiing is literally the only sport where going backwards isnt fakie and is instead switch....

rocket is only one hand on the ski on that side of your body. Cross rocket is when you reach across and grab the ski on the other side.

no, rollerblading is the only action sport that chose to interpret fakie as "going backwards", and skiing didn't choose to follow suite.

It's switch in my mind's dictionary and making the argument that its fakie in other sports isn't a convincing argument.

We're not trying to conform with the sports terminology gods here or in skiing in general, if I say switch you all know what I mean.

If it triggers you so much go talk to a counselor about whatever underlying issues you have that are creating this visceral reaction.

This. Also truck driver used to be a mogul trick, there’s a shot of someone doing one in Maltese Flamingo in the 80s

Doesn’t BMX also say fakie?

sounds about right...

I feel like blading and bikers started saying fakie because the weren't really riding backwards for extended periods of time. They emulated tricks like an "air to fakie" in skateboard or surf, therefore landing backwards/backwards in general became "fakie" even though thats not what the term means.

I think skiing should embrace a unique term vs trying to copy everyone

They already do, lui kang and safety are rollerblade grabs, so is japan, however japan on blades vs skis are pretty different. Where did these things get lost in translation?

Also rollerbladers/skaters/bmx all had the word fakie. Whether or not rollerbladers and BMX had correctly translated it doesn't matter, cuz universally it was already pretty common in action sports that "fakie" and "backwards" were identical.

And even if rollerblading isnt skiing, fakie on blades is is still identical to skiing switch

skate boarders/surfers coined the term "fakie" and it doesnt mean going backwards. You should take the time to understand what it actually means on a skateboard...

If we are gonna use board terminology might as well use it as correctly as possible...Steal straight from the source, don't steal the knock off

They are downvoting because you think his name is Daniel. It takes two seconds to google and his name is Steve. He is one of the most famous skateboarders of all time and there has been a Vans shoe named after him for like ~25 years

People downvoting this don’t know fucking shit. Todd Richards even talks about it on the bombhole

Dude I hope you know that when you ride fakie on a skate you are technically riding the board switch. The reason why its called fakie in skateboarding is because they didn't want to call it a switch nollie. Fakie implies that you are popping off the downhill foot which you don't do when riding skis.

Also Mr. Genius, if we called skiing switch fakie, and doing unnat tricks switch, then doing a switch unnat cork 7 would be called "Fakie switch cork 7" hahahahahah

So much to say, am just going to let the 90 other people that disliked this have at it.

I mean ya they're just words so why should we change how everyone else says something cause you aren't very good at explaining a trick to a non skier?

And how would saying fakie or cab fix that? Cab means switch front side which for skiers would be switch unnatural spin, now it's more complicated and confusing for people who don't skateboard.

It goes both ways man.

for starters, Evan debated the trick names that I invented, and he will forever be a newb, glad he has finally realized how he was acting towards actual professional level skiers... cheers

OP, MY SKIS ARE MOUNTED BACKWARDS. WHEN I SKI SWITCH, MORE SKIS ARE PERFORMING TO THE MAX. MORE THAN NOT, IM FAKIE.......

the only debate here , is why anyone thinks eheath should have an opinion about skiing, he cant do, he cant play the newb card, whats his deal?

it's relative. most people call it switch (never heard fakie applied to skiing until newschoolers) and therefore it is.
