Skiing backwards is not “switch”, it’s fakie.

If anything, spinning unnatural would be “switch”. Nobody’s natural ski stance is backwards you fools.

“frontslide” isn’t a thing, it’s a fast slide.

Truck driver is really called “rocket”.

Im just scratching the surface. What is stopping us from using the right words to describe tricks??? Do people think skiers invented these things and deserve the right to name them? I’m only 25% trolling, it does irk me because its kinda lame to not know the history

Rocket grab is when you double grab the front tips. Truck driver is just a double grab between tips and bindings.

Only applies to spins no? I feel like fakie makes way more sense, because it’s the only tricks that are actually “backwards” on a skateboard. Regardless the term fakie was already used in rollerblading before skiing so that’s where I’m getting that from.

Not sure, I just remember Jossi wells, tanner hall, and TJ Schiller (among many others) called it that.

Tanner calling it cab:

U got me I was thinkin dub nose not truck

I feel like switch is different than fakie because of the difference of stances. There is goofy and regular stances for board sports and then fakie is the opposite of your normal foot stance. Nobody learns how to ski with their ass facing downhill so switch is the same for everyone.

It's switch, it's not fakie or cab, both are skateboard related terms and don't translate to skiing.

Yeah but skiing isn’t a board sport, skateboard terms can’t be directly applied to it

why does skiing have to conform to board sport terms when it’s kind of a unique thing within extreme sports having 2 planks etc. this thread is stupid

"I know what things are called in skateboarding so everything else is wrong"

Skateboard and skiing are kinda different. Sure skiing emulates skating and snowboard sometimes but they aren't the same. They can have different names.

Idk, I can never understand why people randomly get mad about trick names years later because something about skateboarding or another sport.

I say we come to a consession and call skiing backwards "non forward".

Yeah but in skateboarding both reg and switch you are facing “forward”. I mean you can also see it in the tricks, when people do fakie shit usually they show more back, it’s the only thing that compares to being “backwards”.

Yeah but would you rather say 'backwards dub 1440'?

Fakie and cab both refer to things you can not do on skis, stop copying others and embrace something unique for skiing.

I’m talking fruit boot terms g! Which yes, a lot did also come from skating, but they have unique names for some stuff and it makes more sense, and also came wayyyy earlier than any skiing tricks.

I’m 100% down to rename everything I already have roughly half of the theoretical new names already drawn up, but if we’re gonna copy anyone i don’t know why we chose snowboarders to begin with

Why would you change something people have been saying before you even skied?

It's called switch brother and honestly it's not a debate.

Eh, I mean my biggest struggle is trying to explain tricks to non-skiers. Plus they’re just words, and some can be universal. The whole switch thing is just one of the examples, there’s so many tricks that have different names in every sport despite being near identical for no reason.

Theres only one option for going forwards or backwards in skiing though cause you can only travel downhill. Then you can spin left or right.

I kinda cringe when people try and force skate lingo into skiing, like relax dude no one thinks youre cooler and its confusing people. I get ski trick names are derivative of skate/snowboarding but why change it when its widely accepted

I mean ya they're just words so why should we change how everyone else says something cause you aren't very good at explaining a trick to a non skier?

And how would saying fakie or cab fix that? Cab means switch front side which for skiers would be switch unnatural spin, now it's more complicated and confusing for people who don't skateboard.

It goes both ways man.

My only problem is when people have their legs together and call it truck driver. Deff got to spread those legs apart to drive truck. Used to be my local claim to fame and then I blew my MCL in the air kicking my feet out for the grab. I know fuckin athlete !

A lot of skiing terms were sort of mistranslated from snowboarding / skateboarding, but at this point they are the correct terms and there's no point changing them. Like a lip 2 should be called a hardway 2 because that's what it is in every other sport (or truespin in blading when done into a plate trick), but it stuck so it's a lip 2.

People downvoting this don’t know fucking shit. Todd Richards even talks about it on the bombhole

How does it make more sense to call it fakie not switch? Skating switch is when you are standing the other way on the board. Fakie is just the way you pop it going switch. Do you imply that when i do a switch lip 270, i am popping fakie and not switch? What makes it more fakie ollie than switch ollie?

Skating and skiing is not the same thing and doesn’t need to cross words this way. It’s just a word to tell what trick you are doing. Complicating it would be silly

Isn’t it Steve cabellero? He did fakie backside 360s and people called them full cabs I thought that’s where it was from

This is kinda what I was getting at. Like why is it so heinous to use the words that make sense, which judging by everyone’s responses, because it’s too late? Is that the consensus here?

Skiing backwards is just backwards. It doesn't translate to 'switch' or 'fakie' as it's known in skateboarding.

'Rocket' and 'Nose grab' are interchangeable.

I've never heard someone call a fast slide a front slide, but it makes sense someone would because a backslide is the back foot version.

Good luck undoing 20+ years of accepted terminology though.

Hot take if someone does an unnat switch three I will ski up and say "nice full cab". Sw unnnat 180 is a half cab. Those are the only two times id say cab in skiing.

i can see how "fakie" and "switch" both accurately describe skiing backward. But vast majority of ppl call it switch so it kinda stuck

On a related note I always find it hilarious hearing snowboarders try to name ski tricks lol. It seems like we know most of the snowboarding terms but they always say I'm doing 'combos' on rails, grabbing 'indy', doing 'half cabs' or 'full cabs' or a 'misty flip' for any invert.

Because the currently used terms all make sense to us and it comes off weird trying to change them, I just don't think it's necessary.

Wait...I thought we decided 10 years ago that we were going to start calling switch "ridin dirty"? Am I the only one that followed through?
