North American Open

Possible the best comp format invented! You didn’t see back to back double flips in the x games! The format was amazing and from a spectators point of view the coolest comp to watch because there was always a constant flow of people hitting the jumps! Props to the makers and Jon and Simon! I hope the North American Open is hear to stay!!!!!!

Most well run, well organized, athlete oriented, and fun event that I have ever been too, no contest. Also the biggest and most fun jumps that I have ever hit. Huge props to both of them for killing it skiing and organizing the event.

It was pretty sick. Even though it was an open though the "boss men" shouldn't have competed. I mean sure go compete against them, but don't count your scores.

It's the "North American Open" not the "only AM's who wanna place so they can get sponsered open. You don't see Tiger Woods holding the flag for his opponents at the Buick Open.

I'd be mad if they didn't compete, and throw down their best. It makes a podium run by an unknown more legit.

People seriously need to stop bitching about jon and simon winning and getting 2nd at their own comp. Simon is the second best pipe skier in the world, and the best one wasn't there. So why is it "stupid" that he won it? I'm sure he deserved it by a far shot. And you could argue that jon is the best jumper in freeskiing, so why is it surprising he podiumed? It wasn't an AM contest or anything, it was an open. Pros are the best in the industry by definition, and are going to win stuff. You guys may like AM's much more than pros and want t-wall and bobby brown to win, but there not as good as the pros in this sport. Sorry?

It was a dope competition, props to jon/simon for throwing it. Sucks about the weather; but there's never good weather when you need it.

The format was good and jon and simon definitly had the right to compete.

my issue is with how they judged the qualifying. if they saw a dumpshoot double back from across the park they ould give out a bib but when my buddy dose switch left 7, switch right ten nosemute, to switch left 10 tail 3 times he doesn't get shit exept thanks for comming out. they missed a lot of runs in qualifying because they were just hitting the awesome jumps.

jon and simon should have put in some effort to actually watch the qualifying in a tower where they could see everyone rather than just picking the names and the circus acts. fuck nao. that final would have been so much better if a two run qualifier decided the competitors and not felatio.

^ yea thats sucks for your mate, but wasnt the point of the comp to have fun riding with the pros? as with all comps it is only its first year so though will no doubt work on improving it and ironing out any glitches.

IMO it looked like a real sick comp with a great vibe

Yea, echoing this. It was soo much fun.

And I was pretty surprised about the kid who threw both sw10's not making it. Seemed like he was riding a lot better than some of the people who did make it. It's hard though, because a big reason as to why it was so fun is because so many people could drop so quickly, which inherently makes it harder to see everything.

I just don't think it's right that he is winning his own competition. Go ahead and compete against each other if your pro or not, but don't count the scores.

Here is what I thought the podium should have been...

1. Jacob Wester

2. Tanner Rainville

3. Bobby Brown

then Jon in fourth. His run just wasn't anything we haven't seen a thousand times. He can do different doubles, he should have thrown some other double, or just something else. And Bobby's switch double rodeo was an incredible trick.

Hey!

Bobby is sick, in my eyes he is the next guy to be an uberpro.. no doubt in my mind... but he did not grab in his switch doubles therefore he did not get a better score.. with a grab things would have been different.. huge props to him though!

As for judging we did have guys in the tower that would radio to us so we had it pretty covered, BUT it was the first year with an all new format, so sure we can inmprove this format slightly to make it even more fare but in order to change something you need to start somewhere and nothing is ever perfect the first time...

JON

Looked like a super sick competition as well! Looked like athletes had a good time, i dont praticularly mind big named athletes competing, but at this point in our sport with the need for growth for the industry to grow, i think it would be huge if athletes such as Simon and Jon did run an event but let a bunch of relatively unknown talented athletes jump in there and get there opportunities. Otherwise we'll have the same people winning the same competitions for so many years to come. Maybe not at this at event, but deffinately at some others!

i dont see your logic at all, its an OPEN... anyone can compete? Whoever throws the sickest run takes the cake... so simon and jon threw down at a comp with their name on it. That does not mean they dont deserve to podium...

Seriously, why is people having problem with Jon and Simon competing. What is all this crap about giving unknown guys opportunities? Since it was an OPEN everybody had their opportunity. They just did not ski good enough. Why should we not let the best compete just to give the the not-so-good-guys the opportunity to win? What would the status of a competition like that be?

And fot Bobby getting screwed, come on, as Jon explained he did not grab his double. As long as there is judges there will be some unfair decisions. Stop whining.

ppl r so critical jon and simon sarted something great and it will only get better... further more bobby's sw dub in m opinion is the second best i have seen next to jons...and his was in a sloperun just had to give hm props

How can you say that Jon doesn't podium? Who cares if we have seen the tricks before, that's not what judging is based on.

Bobby's run was good, but he hit the down flat down box and his tricks were thrown without grabs. Maybe if he spun onto the rail, and MAYBE if he had a grab in that first trick things would be different.

It reminded me of the X games when everyone booed tanner. It was another gutless move by freeskiers to be chanting Bobby's name when Wester won the comp. Come on. Show some class.

Not gonna lie I tough westers run shouldnt have won. that fakie 9 to spread eagle wasnt the best thing I've seen, sure the double was sick but the rest wasnt THAT great.

Boddy's doing a 270outon the box and the fact that he missed the grab on the double and seems like he did too on the rightside 7 on top makes it logical that he didnt podium. That being said I think the way he stomepd his shit was awesome and that he'll be one of those we'll have to watch closely in the future.

Jon's run was picture perfect as usual making it logic for him to podium.

he didnt deserve podium. the only people that got screwed were everyone attending the dinner who had to deal with his fucking jackass friends ruining the vibe by booing and acting like idiots. yeah he did get screwed but only by his own friends being disrespectful retards.

To Jon's credit, Not many other event organizers, if any, are watching and posting in threads about their events. From what I heard, everything ran smoothly and people were stoked. Find me one comp in the past 2 years where judging hasn't been disputed? The format of this event was different which is what we need more of in the sport. Leave the strict format for FIS. I like the idea of keeping it loose and having fun!

you clearly don't understand how comps work behind the scenes and are not very educated on how people get recognized in skiing.
I don't know how many times it needs to be said to people on NS that a comp without the biggest pros does not get unknowns recognition. Who gives a shit if Bobby Brown(sick skier by the way) beats Tom Wallish(also a sick skier) at an open comp when no pros are competing. Bobby Brown finished 4th behind a stacked podium of uber pros. That says something about him. He beat Simon, Peter, Mike O, and a whole list of others. Jon and Simon both said at the meeting grabs were very important. So next time you go to a comp, as specific questions if you dont wanna get screwed. Ask what percentage a grab is worth in a trick.
Like someone else said, Rainville proved spin to win is not the only way to get on the podium.
Jon's the man, deserved 2nd. And did anyone else notice that when the light and weather was not cooperating he was the one who grabbed the sprayer and painted the zig zags on the landings to help everyone.
And petertosh, go ahead and say fuck nao, the best comp these days. Classic Ninthward skier, hating on everything and everyone. Change your attitude and maybe you will learn to have fun skiing. Why don't you get Ninthward to throw down some serious money and you organize a comp with real sponsors, tv coverage and pros. We'll see what NS thinks about it.

its obviously my opinion.

i look at it this way

Jon had a huge advantage coming into his own comp, he designed the course, the format, and chose the pre-qual athletes.

i think it is GREAT that he made this comp, and i love the way they did the qualifiers. However i will stick to my words forever. Competing in a comp your hosting is an unfair advantage and just plain weird! whoever made the comment about Tiger Woods, the Buick Open isnt called the Tiger Woods Buick Open.

This event was marketed as Simon and Jon's North American Open... they put there name right in the title. whats it gonna look like on jon's resume

2nd Place My North American Open??

to ME (let me clarify this again ME) that seems a little fishy. who knows though

You are right, it is your opinion and your right to say it.
Jon build a comp, jumps, format and pre quals based on what he thought all skiers would like to compete in, jumps that would be big and safe and pre quals that legitimately deserved to automatically be in finals.
Jon and Simon tried to get the most legit judges they could, pro or ex pro skiers(from the last few years, not from the 90's like Josh Loubek). They even tried to get T Hall to judge after hearing he was hurt.
To me it is not fishy if Jon and Simon podium at their own event when they are the best in the sport and on the podiums at the biggest events. If I was good enough to beat them at slope and pipe and I was at their event, I would want them to compete to see if I could stand above them on the podium. The feeling would be amazing to know I beat 2 of the best. Just my opinion though.

i can see where you are coming from but without jon and simon running the comp, it had great potential to suck hard. it was their idea to give people second runs again when the weather went to crap and that has never happened before in a major comp. not one kid complained about how they ran the comp or got an unfair advantage. im so happy, and i know many others who didn't or did make the finals that were grateful for them running the comp. jon is the hardest working guy and after seeing him leave his own party at 9 to go to bed because he was exhausted from making sure everything was perfect, made me respect him so much. jon didnt have an advantage coming in, if anything he had a disadvantage because all the work he put into the jumps was incredible that he even had enough energy to compete. i hope that they run more comps like this one and remember that it was an OPEN comp. meaning anyone could compete. many well deserved careers have been launched at open comps and thats not going to change because two athletes decided to run the event for the better.

okay really, all this bitching about oh jon and simon podiumed at their own event shit is getting old and pros were there and aaahhhhh shut up and chill. yeah the pre qual stuff might've been a little whack but the comp format was the best ive ever been in and just being there was a great vibe. it was the comps first year anyways so of course there's gonna be some kinks in the judging. it will work out better every year as it progresses and even though it was its first year it out did the us open by a ton

props to nao

you like the 50 other NS members are so transparent and stupid, none of you can read the text in front of your eyes and go straight to feeling like someone that shares an opinion is personally attacking you or something you have jumped on the band wagon with.

Like i stated before, NAO looked like a solid event, and i had no problem with Jon or Simon competeing, Then i continued on with saying : It would be really cool to see events of this caliber put on by skiings veterans such as Tanner and Jon and be open events, but actually have themselves stay out to make room for Up and Comers! Now I'm all game for NAO being everyone and big pro's, but I'd really like to see events with this much magnitude and publicity as an option for the new kids on the block, with out having to compete against the biggest and best!

Now if you cant clearly understand it now, please refer to your 4th grade english teacher and re-learn reading comprehension!

Hey this is Bobby Brown and for the record I didnt know anybody who was booing or calling out my name. Those were not my friends, I was right next to all my buds and they were so chill. I know i didnt deserve podium cause i didt grab the switch dub but i did grab the the switch right 7. ha, but anyways i want to give a shoot out to Jon for holding the sickest comp I have ever competed in. well that about it, so don't hate on mty friends cause they are sick.

dude, i got hurt and watched the entire second half of qualifying and i know there were a few kids in there who shouldnt have made it * blake nyman*. and i watched adam battersby do switch right ten high mute into switch left ten lead true tail 3 fucking times and me and alexis godbout decided that if adam didnt make it the judging was bullshit. adam didnt make it, therefore, bullshit. good try but you didnt watch all the competitors. adam had the same color scheme on as colby west and i think that was the issue.
