i was thinking about getting the canon hv30 and i was wondering if you have an option of what you want to film on a sd card or a mini dv because i have never filmed with mini dvs and there pretty exspensive for hd ones
 
No you have to film on mini dv the sd card is for still photo's. You do NOT have to buy hd tapes it's a scam; you can just get normal DV tapes there totally fine they do not effect the quality at all.
 
You don't have to no, but there's a higher risk of having drop-out, and because HDV is compressed (and really really sucks in general) one drop out really means 15dropped frames which is about a half a second...

Still there's no guarantee that a HDV tape wont drop out, but it will drop out less than using regular DV tape.
 
I have had my hv30 for over a year now and iv'e put about 20 normal Dv tapes through it and iv'e always captured on it. I have never had one drop out so, I will tell you HD tapes are a big scam.Here is a thread on the popular hv series forum and everyone will tell you there is no differencehttp://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=2844
