No Snow Oh No!!! Go Green

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for alternative fuel sources and a cleaner environment.......as long as it affordable and reliable. I'm just so fed up with this global warming hysteria being force down our throats. The UK was toying with the idea of issuing it's citizens "carbon cards" in order to fight global warming. Basically, every citizen from the queen down would be issued a carbon allowance, and if they went over they would either have to buy unused carbon points or pay a tax on how they went over. It's gettting so rediculous. I'm all for lessing our dependence on oil, because it's not gonna be there and we need alternative fuel sources. I'm all for recycling because it's less trash going into landfills and is good for the environment. But the Global warming issue is a political/marketing gimic that makes billions each year.

i want anyone who is questioning global warming (which i feel if you are, your fucking retarded, ignorant or a republican... but i guess all those qualities go hand and hand anyways..) should come to SLC for a few years. last year we had one of the worst seasons slc has seen in a decade or so... this year we broke 700 inches and had the highest snowfall ever fallen in consecutive dec. jan. in one year... i have never seen more crazy weather than i have here... i skied pow last friday.. and last summer it rained 4 times, all summer. the pollution here is crazy. its not that we pollute more, but we have the "soup bowl" affect, all of our pollution gets trapped in the valley with mountains surrounding at all sides, some times it will stay in the valley for weeks until a storm can roll in and push the nasty inversion out, but thats not before we experience a little bit of acid rain. and speaking of inversion, sometimes when it gets really bad here, walking a mile outside is equivalent to huffing down a few cigs.. in the past decade, utah has seen a 2 degree increase of average temperatures.. and that's directly compared to the past 100 years of recorded history here in utah. now some of you may say that 2 degrees is no big deal, and slc has been one of the most effected places on earth when it comes to global warming, as most everywhere else in the world has on average seen a 1 degree increase, but 1-2 years every decade for the next 5 decades will wipe us out.. this is as real as it gets, and this is one war that we all have to fight together or we wont beable to beat it..

It isn't a coincidence though. They're dying because the ice they live on is melting, so they end up drowning trying to get to other ice masses because there is so much less ice.

Ice melts because of "climate change", and polar bears die because ice melts. Definitely related.

Cows are a result of our breeding of them and replacing rainforests with cow farms (or whatever they're called). Technically, we should eat less beef, so there isn't any demand, so no need for so much supply. Easy logic.

The "how to" is complicated, but I'm sure that situation could be resolved too.

PS sorry for the double post.

only problem is that out of the 1.5 billion cows in the world, 283 million of the cows live in india (the most out of any country, usa only has 98 million) where cows are sacred and arent killed and obviously not eatin...

Shit. Didn't know that...

Damn I'm stumped about those cows now. I guess if we solve all the other problems though the cow problem won't do quite so much harm.

Bottom line is that global warming has developed form an extreme environmentalist movement to a liberal's tool to increase taxation on the population and increase government control of our economy. So if you want to buy into the left wing propaganda than get ready to start paying higher prices on just about every consumer good you can imagine.

so are you denying that global warming is a problem? i dont really see your point here... and if you do believe that global warming is a problem, id like you to list of some ways to deal with it without spending any money.... shit is going to have to change... and everyone in this world is going to have to pay for it...

well i find this hard to believe since there is still a good foot or more of snow at my local mountain... and the snow usualy all melts by mothers day weekend..

I'm not trying to say that the earth doesn't change temperatures, but to place the blame on human pollution is absurd. It is extremely arrogant to think that humans have enough impact on the earths environment to significantly change the temperature. The earth has been changing temperatures SINCE IT WAS FORMED (remember a little thing called the ice age??), and last time I checked there were no humans alive at that time. And something that I don't understand is why people ignore the huge firery ball in the sky called the sun. A slight change with that thing could easily change the earths temperature by a few or by a few thousand degrees- but polliticians want us to beliieve its because of "US GREEDY AMERICANS!" I am all for taking care of the earth, (I live here to you know), but I don't want to see our economy destroyed because polliticians tell me that I am killing the polar bears and penguins because I drive my car to work, while they fly around on their private jets and buy up ocean front properties.

How is it arrogant to think that we can impact the earth?

We have proven our capability to be the cause of the 6th major extinction event.

We have proven our capability to recklessly pollute our oceans where there is a flotsam of plastic weighing an estimated 100 million tons.

We have proven our selves capable of creating weapons-- and we have the power to destroy the planet many times over.

We have proven our ability to spew enough chemicals into the atmosphere to create a hole in the ozone layer

I think it is reasonable to think that, with this list of grand accomplishments, that we are very likely the cause of global warming. We have been industrializing for over 200 years. Over 200 years of humans taking the energy that once came from the sun, and re-releasing it, along with gases that act as a means to better trap the sun's energy.

But you have the audacity to think that we are a minute force on this planet?

I understand your complaint, those who ask us to change, are responsible for more than our share of the problem. But if they were to 'lead by example' their power would be useless. How would a politician be able to do his/her job if he/she wasn't able to use the system we have in place today? The reality is still real, regardless of the hypocrisies of those preaching the reality.

well there are many definitions but basically it is living a sustainable lifestyle and being environmentally conscious.

did you not read my post like 5 posts up? just because global warming is happening doesnt mean that it wont snow, dramatic climate shifts will lead to odd and unusual weather patterns.. some things dont matter as much as others, but many things have changed... like el nino which hasnt been around for that long..

im quite aware that global worming exists... i was making fun of all the dumb fucks who wont admit it.. like our shitty government

hybrid cars are worse for the earth right now then those that are run by gas or diesel. our planet is going through a food crisis and all these go green types are using up corn that could be used to save starving people (or our economy) to run their stupid little hybrids. fuck, i live in boulder and the special spots for hybrids are closer to the store entrance than the handicap spots. shits ridiculous.

corn based fuel (ethanol) and hybrids are two different things. hybrids are engines combined of gas and electric motors. they are more fuel effecient than regular gas engines, but cost more and are less environmentally friendly to produce and dispose of.

it baffles me to see that some of you kids are so swayed by the bullshit that your parents feed you... maybe research some shit on your own and you'd be a little bit more knowledgeable, but as stated above me, hybrid and ethanol are two completely different vehicles... and yes ethanol is bad, but not because were not helping starving people (one of the worst arguments ive ever heard, since ethanol, although corn based, is not made from the corn stalks you see when driving through ohio, rather its made in a factory with a bunch of chemicals), the real reason why ethanol sucks is that it takes so much transportation (by big rigs, boats and other petroleum based means) to get it from start to finish that it would end up hurting us more than helping... in my honest opinion i think that hydrogen and ion lithium batteries (with rechargeable drivetrains) will be the future that we need..

i dont believe in global warming. in 1986 they started talking about it and saying that snow was almost never going to be around. but here in WI we just had the best winter in like the last 80 years no joke.

First, eli112233 read the thread.

Next, another thing about ethanol. To make it fields have to produce the grains or whatever it is they make it with. Countries in South America end up chopping down rainforests to make room for these grains, so the benefits of ethanol are most likely outweighed by the bad of losing rainforests.

So ethanol isn't sustainable. That is kinda old news though.

Electric cars and hybrids are definitely steps in the right direction though.

So are hydrogen vehicles, which most of the buses (sp?) in Vancouver are.

'Who killed the electric car' is a great doco worthy of checking out. Obviously it's going to be biased towards a promotion of the electric vehicle as the solution, but from what is said there, and what i've heard else where Hydrogen just relocates the problems of conventional fuel emissions to the production of the fuel source rather than the usage of the fuel source within the vehicle.

you guys are fucking idiots. global warming isn't something you believe in like the easter bunny. it is PROVEN that it exists! denying it is not going to help. pull your head out of your asses and pay attention!

but how is that possible... i was under the impression that basically all you have to do is add an electrical current to water and split the atoms that we can make hydrogen (i know i put it in a very elementary way but you get the idea) not to mention that at least the end result is 100% water vapor... i mean gasoline, which takes a lot of fuel and energy to produce, by the time you put it in to your car and use it, it comes out as a very harmful chemical to our environment... i mean think about if every car in slc was converted to hydrogen, we could get rid of this ridiculously arid climate in the summer and add snow in the winter!! (claim)

make a decision about what? i dont give a fuck what al gore has to say.... and i dont give a fuck about the inconvenient truth, but the fact is that global warming isnt a theory... its a fact... its like all you fucking republicans that dont believe in evolution, even though it's not a fucking theory anymore...

its true, but having a stable hydrogen cell is a challenge. its pretty much like driving around a hydrogen bomb. and there still working on making it work better

this i understand and i know this is one thing engineers still have to perfect... but mercedes, bmw, and VW groups are already really close (last year mercedes broke the land speed record for a hydrogen car at 172 mph and also release there Bluetech engine, which has both hydrogen and gas tanks and the capacity to run on both [300 miles on gas and 200 on hydrogen])

no i did not read it... nor did i read the 2 pages before it... i simply stated my opinion..

And as part of my opinion i dont believe in "global warming".. thing like this have happend in the past except it was called "global cooling".. so since we arnt all icesickles now im not too worried....

technically its a theory and so is evolution. just no one understands the science definition of a theory. a theory is proven by many, many experiments by different people, but because of how science is you can never be entirely sure. as einstien said many experiments could never prove him right, but one experiment could prove him wrong.

wow you really need to shut the fuck up. evolution is far from proven fact (although i do believe it to be true, thanks for making generalizations). its called the THEORY of evolution, just like te THEORY of man made global warming. you probably didnt even watch the vid so thats all the time ill waste on you

well they would be now, but they wont be once they can produce them in an efficient way... i mean look at the hybrid civic... it starts at like 30 something thousand... for a fucking civic... and i wasnt trying to get into a debate about evolution, but evolution IS a FACT... but we are still very far from understanding the mechanisms by which evolution occurred.. thus, in some peoples minds (skeptics), its still a theory.

so you realize how much of the earth's population lives in coastal areas? about 3 billion poeple, half the world's population. by 2025 that number is suppose to double. thats a lot of fucking poeple

err.... i think the debate is about whether it is human caused or not: the ice caps are melting, weather is getting more severe, the planet is indeed warming. Not that you care to be right, just heard.

there will still be snow for the foreseeable future just not in its usual places and not in its usual quantities.

If climate change continues Britain will get far more snow, polar icecaps will begin to melt at an exponential rate, which will eventually block the gulf-stream, making Britain a much colder place.

You americans don't see a reason to be worried cuz you have a shitload of snow. We in Estonia aren't so lucky.

Local mountain, webcam shots of the season

Don't worry, if there is alot of increased freshwater dumped into the atlantic due to warming, it won't be long before the Gulf stream will no longer keep you warm. You guys are going to freeeze!
