no smoking

starting tommorow, in new york state, it will be against the law to smoke tobacco in bars and resturants. If the law is violated, the bartender working and the establishment will both be fined. The law was created to bennefit the employees of bars and resturants. However, it is questionable as to whether the law is legal and whether the bar owners should have the right to decide if they will be smoking or non. Im torn two ways on the issue because being a non smoker working in a bar, im glad that i wont have to breath smoke during the 50 hours i work a week. But on the other hand i think bar owners should be the ones to decide. Do you know if there is any similar law in your state and what do you think about it?

Ottawa went no smoking inside and its the best thing since sliced bread.

You go to bars and come home NOT smelly like smoke. You feel 'clean' in comparison. Food is more enjoyable, and the atmosphere is much better.

Going to other cities, it's like a slap in the face...oh yea, they can smoke...and you want to leave...

So YAY.

I don't smoke tobacco products, never have never will. but cogg smoke does do a good job of coverign up the sweet sweet scent of Jane.

sure its good for the non smokers like myself (i live in new york by the way) but it also will bring down the business in every bar. when smokers go to a bar they enjoy drinking AND smoking. nicotine addicts get crazy when they dont have it in their body, and when it is in their bodies they feel relaxed (my dad is a smoker, so trust me i know). most people go to a bar to relax. smokers who arent allowed to smoke in a bar will not feel relaxed there and therefore will not go there to have a drink. this hurts the bars because a majority of the people who visit them are probably smokers. it should be up to the owner of the bar or restaraunt.

Ottawa has been smoke free for over a year now and 'studies' have said that most bars haven't lost any business.

hmm well if it has been proven that the smoking ban will not harm business they i say go forth. and i just thought of another thing. non-smokers will be more likely to visit a bar now because most non-smokers hate cigarette smoke. so it balances out in the end. sweet.

if smoking a cigarette is harmful (and you're smoking it through a filter), then how can breathing in the smoke of 4 other people sitting at your table not be harmful? Many elderly people that don't smoke have emphasema (forgot how to spell there) because they live with someone that smokes, and living with someone that smokes does much less harm than working 8 hours a day in a smoke filled bar. You'll get an increase of familys in places, and the smokers won't leave.. because they've got nowhere else to go if they want to go out somewhere.

yeah, i cant stand going into smokey places. it really sucks having to breathe it and smell like it. but at the same time i am pro business, so i think it should be optional for the businesses. maybe there could be incentives for having smoke free places.

I live in Australia, and we have no smoking where food is served. Soon (hopefully) there will be no smoking in bars and clubs. It is so much nicer going out for dinner and not having smoke near you. I can't wait to go out to a club and coming home not smelling of smoke!

Don't try to fix me- I'm not broken

every place here is smoke free except the bars but only till 2004,and here is kapuskasing

yeah you put on some clean clothes to go out for the night and you get back and they smell like shit.

im not old enough to go into bars nor have i ever smoked a ciggarette. But, it seems to me...that ciggerettes should be allowed in bars. i mean, i know a couple people who only smoke cigs when their at a bar having a beer. And if they can't do that, maybe they will go home and drink beer and have their one cig a week. But maybe if they get used to smoking at home...they'll smoke more cigs.

i dunno what im saying...just seems like smoking should be allowed.

Me: Yeah, all the hicks and stuff in are school make in the hallway its gross.

Sisters bf: Well, they don't care. Their not leaving town, their just like 'Fuck it.'

Sister: Yeah, thats how i feel about law school right now, 'Fuck it, make out in the hallway.'

Collingwood is smoke free already :D. thats good too. i hate eating at smoky restaurants.

Montgomery County, Maryland has passed a public smoking ban which will go into effect 09-Oct-03. I don't smoke and as an asthmatic, smoke has deliterious affects on my health - however, instead of banning smoking in PUBLIC areas, it would be just as simple for people like me to refrain from spending time around smoke.

Who says smokers have to go to bars? Its a right for me to have an evening out without becoming polluted.

I've been to the bars when smoking was permitted, at the time, I didn't care. BUT now, that i've experienced the smoke free environment, I HATE going to bars with smokers.

And for those who do smoke...for the kids out there thinking of smoking...guess what, its not cool anymore. You don't become cool by smoking and you don't look 'tough' either.

Get the msg across and we shouldn't even be having a discussion on smoke-free bars or not.

AND, there is a woman in Ottawa who has never smoked in her life, but was a waitress for 40 yrs that now has lung cancer. Many doctors have determined it was 2nd hand smoke for all those years. So don't give me any bullshit on not proven to be harmful.

Take the nasty 'habit' to your private home

there are similar laws in and around Boston too. These laws do suck to smokers, and people will say just quit, but honestly, its not that easy. Also, second smoke might be somewhat dangerous, but the figures have been all blown out of proportion, and basically it was determined to be no more detrimental than breathing the air on a busy street, but I agree it can be an annoyance to non-smokers. Another problem though is that these laws force smokers outside, which can block sidewalks, breate road hazards, and also facilitates theft (by people just walking off).

I don't think that these laws are wrong (per se) but, I think people were over-zealous about getting rid of smokers. Instead of taking it one step at a time, they decided to force them out, creating many problems that could have been avoided.

we can all say thanks to big brother now!

i will be damned if someone wants to have a smoking bar then let them or if they wan tit to be non-smoking great but when the government comes down and says no you cant do that, umm i dont think so. our government started with a 'laissez-faire' (hands off) approach to business and guess what thats the way it should be. this is NOT the governments place. and there have been several places in NYC that have put up a big fuss and some that just ignore it. and for all the whiny little babies that say well i like being in a bar and not smelling the smoke, there are plenty out there that are non smoking and it is up to YOU to choose. stop bitchin

Boulder/Denver Colorado have rules like that. I like going to dinner or bars and not having to smell second hand smoke. I like how my clothes don't reek when I leave the place. They did studies here right after the law went into effect, and it didn't change business at all here.

First, I agree with Freezy on this one, if you dont like smelling like smoke, don't eat there. There are plenty other restaurants and places where you can get food, if you dont like the atmosphere you dont have to enter.. Second, because it is a state-wide thing, i dont think that it will cause less people to go to bars. Sure, a lot of the people that like to go to bars also love to smoke, but i doubt they will never go to a bar again just because they cant smoke. Because it is statewide, people wont just walk downstreet and go to another bar where they can smoke. It's either, dont smoke in the bar, or never go to a bar in this state again. i think most people will choose not to smoke.

i personally think that the owner of the bar should decide. as far as family restraunts, its great that they ate now smole free, and it wil probably improve business. but as far as bars go, your drinking alcohol, so why shouldnt you be allowed to smoke?

freezy, are you talking about that bouncer who asked a man to stop smoking and got stabbed? that was my mom's friend's good friend. i guess the guy was really nice, just asked the guy to leave, and then he got stabbed in the leg and punctured at artery and bled to death.

calgary did something like that but they just banned it at restaurants where kids or familys go. i think it is a really good move, because kids dont really have a choice to go to a restaurant or not. i hat esecond hand smoke though it makes me cough and sneeze, and i get a really sore throat.

How does a smoker have any more rights then a non-smoker. They want to be able to go to a bar and smoke, the rest of us want a clean atmosphere. Everyone keeps saying..'if you dotn like it dont go to a place where people can smoke' well there were very few smoke free places untill the law was passed so that wasnt really an option. All we're asking smokers to do is walk the 10ft and go outside for your habit (most places around here have patios and alot ore even heated in the winter) We have been going to bars since before the law was passed here and except for the first few weeks there really wasnt a change, everyone got used to it and noone whines anymore. Smoke is bad for you and this fact is finally being accepted by the general public. fewer people are smoking now and whats wrong with the government trying to help with that?

actually more people are smoking now, they just do not consider themselves 'full-time' smokers. in a recent survey the category of 'social smoker' has gone through the roof

Gotta Love The Midwest

I think the point is getting lost, it is not about who has more rights than who, but it is that it does not seem proper to have this legally mandated. It should be up to the owners of the establishments. The reason there are so few bars in particular that are non-smoking is because the majority of peolpe in bars typically smoke, whether on a regular basis or socially. Therefore the establishments cater to their clientel.

One town by me has taken it even farther by saying you cannot smoke in public at all. The only legal places to smoke in the town are in your vehicle, with the windows up(cannot let the smoke outside) and in your house. You cannot even smoke outside in your property in this town.

There have been some loophole put in the laws to allow 'private' (requiring membership) clubs/bars to allow smoking, but I know locally there is a bill that would only allow the VFW and Elks Club (and stuff like that allow smoking). Again, this seems to be going a little too far.

maine has the same laws i think its nice in restauraunts to have no smoking but i dont know about bars

me: what the hell is that?

sister:its a boat u dumbass

me:well what the fuck do they nedd it for? the shitheads
