No sleep 'til Switzerland

My buddies and I decided to start saving up for a big '22-'23 season trip. We're east coasters but have done Colorado and Utah before. I've heard Switzerland is cool as hell, but we haven't fully committed to a destination yet so I wonder what other places people feel strongly about and would try to convince me on. Basically I'm asking what the best skiing in your life was.

Been to zermatt and that’s sick, huge area with ability to go over into an italian area as well. The zermatt park that you see in edits isn’t in the same area as the majority of the skiing so you would have to decide if your aight with that.

Verbier, whilst stupidly expensive, has some of the best terrain i’ve ever seen or skied, with really impressively managed itineraries and off piste sections. The parks pretty good too.

Other than that, have heard good things about engelberg for its amount of snow.

Laax has the biggest Park in Switzerland but its also super expensive. The Park in Adelboden is also nice. If you want to get on the cheaper side go to Austria. Its way cheaper and they also have nice terrain. I highly recommend the Arlberg Region. Its right around the corner of the Swiss/Austrian Border. PM me for super secret Resort with nice Terrain in Austria...

Fuck it everyone on NS should know about the super secret Place: Its the Sonnenkopf Resort. They don't make artificial Snow, so the Groomers are always nice but the best part about it is the Freeriding. You will see when you get there. Even catched Tortein Horgmo once filming for a Project.

Yea we like the park and all but for a trip like this we almost don't care about the park situation. It would all be about open terrain/backside type skiing for sure. Thanks for the recs, certainly gonna look into them.

Not sure how much park riding you do but zermatt looks like a sick place.

Zermatt is one of the most fun parks I've been to. Definitely recommend it!

What about Whistler? I've heard from a lot of people that you can spend a lot of time there and still not hit all the terrain. My wallet can make a strong argument for staying on this continent, but it's not a deal breaker. I'm just curious if Switzerland/Austria is really that much better?

I’m guessing you haven’t skied in europe?

I would consider Austria. You can fly in to Munich and drive to a place like Ischgl with the bonus that it straddles the border with Switzerland, and you can literally ski in to Switzerland. If you're in to Apres it's pretty legendary. The terrain is pretty amazing as well.

I spent a week there and had the time of my life.

I’m in NH and grew up in Switzerland!! Love seeing some Suisse homies on here. It depends on what you guys want to ski! I’ve had some of the best park/shoot days of my life on the glacier at Zermatt in the summer, but some of the best pow days of my life in smaller areas like Engelberg. If I had to give you a list of Swiss resorts totally disregarding price it’d be this:

Zermatt. The sheer exposure and endless lines you can take here are just insane. You can take a TBar all the way up and go to Italy as well which has really different terrain from the Swiss side so it’s almost like 2 in 1. The park is always on point and the crew there is super cool. I went on a trip there 2 years ago with some homies from college and they got posted on the parks Instagram page, they were super stoked to see people from out of region shredding! This is an area I think everyone who can should experience at least once.

Verbier. Really doesn’t need too much of an introduction. The place is huge, the hits are even huger, and if you hit it right, you’ll have one of the best days of your life. Park is firing too and although not as progressive as Zermatt, still massive and the features get fucking huge. The varied terrain here is super sick. Trees, faces, rollers, it’s all there.

Engelberg. This is a smaller one in the grand scheme of things but from what I understand is starting to gather more attention. This is the truest, most authentic Swiss skiing experience. Raw, natural terrain that will eat your ass for breakfast if you’re not on top of it. Insane views, insane exposure, very good snowfall usually. Food is top notch too which is very important (at least to my fat ass it is).

If you are flying to Geneva, consider taking a bus to France as well. Most of the skiing is within an hour of the airport.

La Clusaz. This is where I learned to ski and it’s where Candide learned to ski. I am not Candide but the place is criminally underrated from a tourism standpoint. 3 entirely different zones ranging from La Balme (which is where the majority of Candides videos come from), with huge rollers and unlimited natural air potential, to really good tree skiing. Park is eh but personally I’d be spending my time out on the mountain.

Chamonix/Courmayeur. Chamonix Grand Montets is cheap skiing and some of the gnarliest terrain going. The base is scree (boulders) so there’s a ton of natural cliffs and airtime potential. Courmayeur is on the backside and the terrain is just as sick, either one of these is highly recommend to a serious skier who wants to ski hard and drop some huge cliffs.

Hope this helps, if you want feel free to PM me OP. I skied all of the major resorts and a lot of the smaller ones so I’d be happy to give you more advice!

[tag=241854]@animator[/tag] good looks dude, thanks for all this info. I'm definitely gonna hit you up in the future when we start narrowing our search.

Livigno is duty free and was cheaper than going to Mammoth for a week from Massachusetts. Val Thorens was sick and the skiable area is absolutely massive. Skiing in Norway is a lot of fun and there's lots of really good touring if you're into that.

I would not go to switzerland its sooo expensive five guys for me and my brother was 35 bucks

That’s because everything that’s “American” is taxed to hell. Dunkin’ Donuts and KFC are the same, why would you eat Five Guys in a country that has some of the best and most diverse food cultures in the world? ??

Its way smaller (only has about five Lifts) and you can ski all slopes in a day. The main difference is the amount of people and price. A day pass costs about 40 Euros. There are mostly Families and local shredders. Make sure to get there early on a pow day because the locals are fast too. If you take the chairlift all the way to the top you can take a pretty epic ride down to the valley on the other side of the mountain and catch the bus that brings you back to the resort

East/central Canadian rockies. Resorts are Castle, Fernie, Revelstoke, Kicking Horse, Whitewater, lake Louise, Marmot Basin, Sunshine Village and more. Shames Mountain is one further north. Countless touring options. in there too.
