No Skiing More Skiing In Ontario

Doug Ford did not permit ski hill to remain open during the recently announced lockdown, Effectively destroying a good chunk of the smaller hills season. How is skiing allowed but ice rinks are allowed to remain open but ski hill is not? Here is a list of outdoor recreation activities that will remain open

Parks and recreational areas

Baseball diamonds

Batting cages

Soccer, football and sports fields

Tennis, platform tennis, table tennis, and pickleball courts

Basketball courts

BMX parks

Skate parks

Golf courses and driving ranges

Frisbee golf locations

Cycling tracks and bike trails

Horse riding facilities

Shooting ranges, including those operated by rod and gun clubs

Ice rinks

Snowmobile, cross country, dogsledding, ice-skating and snow-shoe trails

Playgrounds

Portions of parks or recreational areas containing outdoor fitness equipment

Tobogganing hills and skating trails

**Update
: If you are looking to send an Email to your local MPP this website really simplifies it.

For real thats some bs

woah fuck that, you should overthrow the government..

With the necessary precautions, what makes skiing any different than any of the listed activities

It's the big hills like Blue mountain because people from Toronto go to them. They should just not let people leave the region's.

I 100% agree. If rinks are allowed to stay open Resorts should be allowed to stay open. A Rink is an enclosed space.

Exactly and at least my resort was pretty distanced and everyone wore masks

Send this to the mayor, governor, the king, idk whatever they got in Canada just send this list to them

If the hills have a plan in place to enforce distancing, keep things clean and masked inside, and limit guests as needed within reason the government should leave them alone. If I lived an Ontario I would finding when and where the next lockdown protest is. Can't help but know this is what is coming for the states as well.

Might be a futile effort, but below is the first official online petition I've seen crop up to challenge the closure of ski hills. Not hanging on hope that this will affect any real change, but takes 2 seconds sign and you never know

If anyone from Ontario wants to discuss making some fucking noise, hit me up, I'm beyond pissed that this has happened. Canadians are too damn reluctant to rock the boat, would be nice to change that. Also, for those of us in Ontario, email your fucking MPP. Seriously. Every voice counts.

Doug Ford rly out here running the fun for everyone

I just hope we are actually back by the end of the January. It can always get worse.

hmu if your near mslm or horseshoe im setting up a rail or two

Headed to dagmar Wednesday to get at least one day in before stuff shuts down, apparently they have a park of some sort set up. I was at jay closing day in the spring and i have a feeling the vibes gonna be similar, just a resigned sadness at the loss of some stoke filled days

Not only does this ruin my season, but also my employment. I can deal with the loss since it’s more of a side gig but I’m gutted for my boss

Is 'beer league' hockey still allowed at ice rinks in Ontario? If so, I find that interesting because here in BC our ski hills are currently allowed to remain open, but ice rinks are closed to all recreational activities. The ice is in and higher level organized teams are allowed, but rec hockey is out.

You can isolate southern Ontario from northern, but the logistics of keeping the GTA from going up to Collingwood for a Saturday is impossible.

Dagmars park is pretty good for opening weekend

Dougies just mad he's too fat to ski.

Seriously though, the blow-up indoor soccer fields are allowed to stay open but not ski resorts that were already limiting chair rides to people from the same household + mandating masks + all indoor areas closed except for washroom? That's insane and makes no sense at all. The risk is practically zero. Yet I can still go stand in line with 50 people buying Christmas lights at Walmart (but can't go buy them at a small locally owned store that does a far better job at managing covid risk).

I wouldn't be mad if the rules weren't so completely nonsensical and ridiculous.

Someone mentioned it above, but the real reason ski hills got closed isn’t because the activity is inherently dangerous. Its since rich fucks from Toronto will go to wherever they want to ski, primarily collingwood, and spread covid to places where covid is still at low levels. If there ever was a time where a “locals only” mentality was deserved, its right now. Unfortunately, there realistically isnt a way to confirm if someone is a local, and even if there was, what is included in that definition. My “local” hill is brimacombe, but i know that plenty of lakeshore people are as close or closer. Plus there are places like sir sams, where there are very few true locals, but plenty of cottagers would consider themselves locals, despite splitting time between the gta and that cottage. A similar situation to blue, but blue has a larger true local population. Realistically Ontarios big problem is movement from large urban centres to smaller urban centers and rural areas, but since the shots are called by said urban areas, a full lockdown of Toronto/Hamilton/ottawa will never happen, and shutting ski hills is a way to limit some of that travel. We can all call mps and try to make a difference, but until some of dougies big donors start making a fuss about not being able to go ski when they go to the cottage, we’re gonna be stuck hiking rails.

Side tangent, i know several if my friends families are renting chalets in Quebec for Christmas break, since Quebec isn’t including ski hills in their lockdown. Kinda spoils the point of trying to prevent travel.

You won't have much more fun in Quebec.

Ticket sales are restricted, lift lines are insanely long cause of the restrictions.

For Ontario's skiing, I don't see why they don't look at what have been done here so far in our "redzone"

Yup, this is probably part of it. From what I’ve heard at work today, Blue has been a shitshow the past couple of days, and they weren’t regulating guests/guest numbers as much as they should, so thats probably what prompted this. I know the hills are all brewing up a big shitstorm for Ford, so best case, we can ski in 2 weeks instead of 4.

Sounds like a massive gyp.

But remember, free to ski tour as much as you like.

wya in quebec?

Southern, orford is where i have a szn pass this year. But sutton, brome, owls head are all options too, plus this season probably doing some light touring stuff near the border

Yeah really. Like theres a few spots up near Huntsville, or the soo if you're lucky and live up that way. What, am I just supposed to skin up the staggering 75' of slope on my local dam? Guess its backyard setup season, unless the government decides to change its stance.

"starting January 23rd, we are pleased to announce the reopening of schools across Ontario, alongside the closing of any and all backyard ski setups, in an effort to continue our war on rational decision making"

Only outdoor rinks are open, no organized hockey. And let me tell you, as someone who lives next to an outdoor rink, you're going to catch some shit there if anywhere. Fucking packed harder than wally world, bunch of snotty nosed kids and no masks because it's okay if you are outside.

For those who live in Ottawa their local is a 5-10 minute drive into Quebec, so of course people are still going to go there. Funny that some people feel the lockdown was put in place so people from Quebec won't come to Ontario and now the opposite will be happening.

I feel for ya OP. Already that Ontario doesnt get much snow and the seasons are short. I hope it snows and the Urban will be good

Oh of course, no one expects ottawa people to drive to pakenham instead of just skiing fortune, im talking central Ontario going to tremb/les sommets

Never thought it was that flat in Ontario. But to be fair, Quebec isn’t that much better. Every ski hill thats open is flooded with people, so snow conditions are always shitty anyway. In the laurentians, everything was still open about 2 weeks ago because there was very few covid cases, but with the tourists coming in since the season started, everything had to close... hope ski hills aren’t next!

Theres a couple ok touring spots around Collingwood. probably about 3 days a season with enough snow for it though. My buddy that works in a ski shop near blue told me that they've been selling tons of touring gear to people who have no clue what they're buying though. Apparently multiple people in the last week have bought full setups with tech boots/bindings and then not known that they needed skins.

Many touring bindings/skins/boots have been B/O for a while now... really took everybody by surprise
