Growing up and living in Louisville, Kentucky
my entire life has limited my exposure to many things. In fact, I am at least
an eighth generation Kentucky
boy, raised the same way my dad, granddad, and his father were raised. While my
family history seems to be contained in the state of Kentucky, my mother’s family is completely
different. After being born in the state of Ohio,
she grew up in Sydney, Australia then went on to school in California, eventually finishing in New York. Her extensive travels across the
globe have given me the desire to be exposed to new and different things.
Although I do not have much to offer to the University of Colorado
in terms of diversity, I have a strong desire to learn as a member of a diverse
community. For the next four years of my life I want to fulfill the craving that
my mother has given me. I want to discover the numerous backgrounds that
students at CU have to offer. After being exposed to this new diversity, I will
expect myself to grow as a person. I promise to give back to the community with
everything I have to offer.
Although my past may not be unique,
I come from a very inclusive community that tries its hardest to reach out and
grasp as many elements as possible to then give back to the people that are a
part of it. The school that I have attended for the past thirteen years of my
life encourages each student and teacher to be open about their lives and
ambitions. I have enjoyed this action of sharing myself with others and
listening as well. Not only do I plan on bringing this attribute to Colorado, I also plan to
expand it and celebrate with others how easy it is to spread not only your own
personal experiences but also experiences shared to you by others. My interests
in life stretch widely across the spectrum from sports to puzzles and from complex
math problems to backpacking, yet there seems to be one simple action that provides
me with the most pleasure; giving.
There is no better feeling than
giving something that I earned to another human being. This is what I have to
offer to my new friends at the University
of Colorado. In exchange,
I will learn greatly from them. I look forward to the interesting things that I
will take in from others that shall stimulate my interests in and outside of
class. It is definitely time for me to broaden my horizons outside Kentucky and I know that
my decision to attend CU will provide this opportunity.
Although I may only be a simple
boy from Kentucky,
I want to attend college with the confidence of knowing that the next four
years of my life will broaden my horizons and give me the maturity and
intellect to carry me on for the rest of my life.
