no really: requiem for a dream

raggae, elaborate on that concept - the title. i'd like to talk more about that.

i shall proceed and continue to rock the mic

P-JO: 'where do you come up with this shit? I mean its not shit, but is there some book I need to read?'

I actually didnt know what requiem meant when i first watched the movie so i looked it up and it means

A hymn, composition, or service for the dead

So how that ties in with 'for a dream' im not too sure. Anybody who knows share it cos id like to.

if you have been into that scene or know people who are its a very depressing movie, but i guess thats how it is in real life, i think trainspotting is a little cheasy because well all addicts have epiphanys for like a day, maybe even a week, then eventually start doing it again, i had a hard time believeing the end of that movie.

ive got another version of the pole dangle, its pretty funny too, gets cold when i do it on the lift tho.

Has anyone else on here read the book it's based on, by Hubert Selby Jr.??? I agree with all of you in how fucking amazing this movie is, and I watch it all the time, but please anyone if you're interested in it- definitely read the book. It's a fucking trip and a half, Selby Jr. is amazing with his writing skills... and d-loc, it def. is a crazy movie on boomers, not such an enjoyable time though... Anyways, here is a short exerpt from the foreword he wrote at the beginning of the book....

"To pursue the great American Dream is not only futile but self-destructive, because ultimately it destroys everything and everyone involved in it. It nurtures everything except those things that are important: integrity, ethics, truth, our very heart and soul...

It seems that we all have a dream of our own, our own personal vision, our own individual way of giving, but for many reasons we are afraid to pursue it, or to even recognize and accept its existence. But to deny our vision is to sell our soul. Getting is living a lie, turning our back on the truth, and visions are glimpses of the truth. Nothing external can truly nurture my inner life, my vision.

But what happens when I turn my back on my vision and spend my time & energy accomplishing the American Dream? I become agitated, uncomfortable in my own skin, because the guilt of abandoning my inner life, of deserting my vision, forces me to apologize for my existence, to need to prove myself by approaching life as if it’s a competition. I have to keep getting stuff in an attempt to appease and satisfy that vague sense of discontent that worms its way through me.

Most people will not experience this torment, but enough do and have no idea what is wrong. There’s no term to apply to this free-floating anxiety, but the cause is what’s destroying us, not the classification.

Eventually we all have to accept full and total responsibility for our actions, everything we have done, and have not done. It is sad to see so many people who don’t know the difference between the vision in their hearts and the illusion of happiness in the American Dream. In pursuing the lie of illusion, they make it impossible to experience the truth of their vision, and as a result, everything of value is lost."

-Hubert Selby Jr.

its a simply only a fucked up movie if you just look at it as you watch it as.. rather than thinking about it and seeing into it more, which is what the point of the story is, or at least the original novel. and yes.. many different things iwthin it. its pretty intense. such a good movie, though.

one love.

read the book and it's filled with talk about herion, it's the main drug in the movie...

its heroin.

contrary to popular belief you can snort heroin. thats how many start out, then start shooting to get higher faster and better.

if you are going to counter with pulpfiction, uma's character did entirely too much.

is a movie that bashes drugs i didn't quite get the description

i think the big thing about the movie is that the director and the rest of the production team, totally nail the feeling of being on drugs. which so many people desperately try to do but so rarely can actually pull it off. i didn't find anything in this movie to be cliche or played out.

my only complaint about the film is that the characters (other than the mother) are pretty unidimensional - hardly developed at all. but i suppose to some extent the emotional depth is there, the seriousness of their situation. and i suppose to extend that idea further, the film uses all four of them in synthesis to produce a feeling about drugs, so to some extent they are symbiotic or complementary, not just single characters - and thats crucial to the climax which is seriously interwoven. if that makes any sense.

i would disagree in saying that they are underdeveloped. infact, i would go to say that they are well developed, but in a different way. it seems as though they are portrayed as very plain; there isnt a whole lot going on in their lives, but with all of the addictions, it makes even nothing into a tragedy. i doubt that made any sense, eh whatever

the last 30 minutes or so are so well done. the shift in music from person to person and then how it all meshes was intense and dramatic, and all the while super effective.

the movie has a great soundtrack. the first time i watched it, i liked how the original score shifted its sound. like in the beginning it had that wierd beat thing, and it gradually shifted to that more somber violen or whatever it was.

aside from my babble, requiem is a great movie - both artistically and meaning

No offense to anyone who liked it, but this movie, as AWESOME as it was,...welll I hated it. I felt physically ill afterwards. I guess that was probably the objecitve...to prove the power of addiction. Well, it worked. I recommend it to anyone, but I no interest in watching it again.

yeah. no movie has ever come even remotely close to making me as depressed as i was the only time i've seen this movie. i give the filmmakers the utmost respect for the complete conveyance of this emotion, but i really haven't had the desire to watch the movie again. and that's coming from someone who really doesn't get affected by any movies ever.

It's an intensely powerful film, I felt huge relief in the closing scene, the game show you know..

I showed it to my friend and he means it, he will never try drugs after seeing this (hard drugs, don't count MJ) because as it has been said and seen, the portrayal of addiction is unbelievable, you just know nothing good is gonna happen to people, they even lie that "No, no , I don't do it anymore" and get themselves killed......

I'd have to say to whoever said that Trainspotting's ending was "cheesy", dude, Rents didn't STOP using, he just chose to live his life, stole the money to get a new start, which in no way means he would be clean.

But Requiem, Ellen Burstyn should have won the Oscar instead of Halle Berry..

yeah you got that right about the characters not so developed in the film, but the book it's based on by Selby Jr. has a lot more plot and character development, there's a lot more depth to the story and he portrays being smacked up and addicted so well in his descriptions, just as well as aronofsky does in the film. Both book and movie are fucking awesome, and I wish more people would read Hubert's book, but to those above who said they couldn't handle the depressive feelings after watching the movie once- This book has that, but much stronger and for a much longer time, it's messed up, so be ready... for those who are that interested though, definitely buy it because it's my favorite book without question.

Is it just the same title for the book? I assume it is.

As far as character development I think that it developed more internally then it did externally, because the dream of each person was seperate yet was decaying slowly as characters winded down into despair or failure without realizing their own destruction, it's all just semi-dramatic irony. It's great.

And for whoever said you can shoot up Coke, I wouldn't know, has anyone heard of someone trying that?

read the book. character development is so good and so much deeper due to time limitations in movies. read book if you want a full vibe on the movie.

that was a real good movie. it was the first movie that i was actually moved by. the ending really got to me and i don't even have anybody that has had an addiction problem. real good movie.

fuck yes, everyone who remotely liked the movie should go pick up this book and read it, even if you don't like reading do it anyways, it's so tight.

Not sure, because I don't do it, but when you "freebase" coke, I'm pretty sure that means that you are doing something to it to make it into a form that you can shoot.

negatory. freebasing coke just means you're laying it down on some tinfoil, adding a pinch of baking soda and some water, smearing it around 'til the foil is covered with it, lighting it from the bottom then inhaling the smoke that rises through a straw or tube or what-not. just making it smoke-able...
