I was gonna try out no poles next time I go up skiing, I was just wondering, do the poles really help your balance that much?

but seriously, it depends, i've done no poles a little and it had it advantages and it's dissadvantages

I just think it looks too much like those aerials guys in the air. I think they help balance too, but it's also really good training to ski with out them every once and a while. For sure there are too many kids trying to imitate pros they've seen skiing with no poles who just want to be different and "get noticed" good luck cool guys

i think its okay to not use poles when your just dickin around.. but not something that freeride skiing should start doing for style..

i will always use poles. i just wouldnt know what to do with my hands if i didnt have them

Me and my firends dropped them for the first weekend of skiing. There was nothing open. Our whopping 500 feet of vert. We were just screwing around, it it can be very fun without them.

For dicking around, it's bvetter without. For legit skiing, it's better with.

skiing with no poles is hot, the only thing that is tough is not having poles in the liftline.

its fun to go fast and pick up snow and hurl snow at random people.

and chances are your poles are short and useless anyways, so why have em?

no poles makes ur style look wack in the park..

and once u go outside the park, ur a fucking jackass...

its retarted to not use poles outside the park or inside the park to.... just use poles

use poles

looking for cult!!!

like nomensteven put it once :skiing without poles is like haveing a man give you a blowjob. it feels good but once you look down, you realize your gay.

or something along those lines

seriously one of the fucking lamest things i've ever heard. all people do in skiing is hate hate hate on shit that they don't do. it's just like tight pants, people hate on that shit sooo hard. i don't personally do it, but seriously, it's personal preference. some people find no poles more fun that riding with poles...who is anyone to call them "gay" for it? ignorant ass mother fuckers.

Learning to ski smoothly with no poles means you actually have enough strength and balance in your legs to not rely on your arms.

so I support no poles, cause if you can pole it off smoothly (pun! tee hee) then you will be smoother than a silky sloth when you're skiing WITH poles.

all stupid if you think that 2 sticks that weigh a lot less than a pound each help you balance. skiing with and without is no different. with just looks better in most cases. without is fun too though. give it a shot.

um are you kidding me? Poles make all the difference esp when actually skiing. Its more about the movement and body position they put you in.....you think pole planting is just for fun?

I LOVE riding no poles sometimes...its not like i always do it but its fun to drop them for a few park laps

lets all be happy and settle this once and for all

one pole

left coasters use there left hand

right coasters use there right hand

then itd be like the crips 'n the bloods

so snowbladers that use poles are the same as skiers? seriously you people are so fucking retarded. i bet in the future when you all try not using poles for yourself, you'll probably find it at least a little fun and feel foolish about being such closed minded asses.

Quoted for truth.

I ahted on it until I gave it a try. It's pretty fun. It changes the way the skiing feels.

Better question....

Who really cares, seriously at the end of the day if your buddy was rocking no poles. And still put all he had into the day; he deserves more respect than punk ass little shits who will run their mouth and call him fag or queer.

poles in the park are useless.

Unless you use a plant to set your spin.

pole plants arn't needed while park skiing. Drop them and give it a run or to, just for fun.... that's the whole point of skiing right?

It may infact help your skiing and balance, if your not a fan and feel wierd, pick the poles back up.

In the steeps and setting turns and timing your movements in the pow they are key, but that doesn't happen so much when your throwing a switch up on that box, or in the air.

owned. but really its tough, and people will call you out if you're not like perfect without them, they'll be like "wtf you think you're cool" i dunno it gets old both ways

Someone made a good point, it should be alright to not rock poles if you're just messing around (training). It will can certainly make you a better skier. But seeing andy marhe skiing lines with no poles just looks silly. Poles equal more contact points to the snow and if you're on some hairy pitch with exposure you'd be stupid to think you're better off in any regard.....style, safety, or function
