No Poles in Powder.

balance. is stability not almost a synonym for this word? aren't poles for balance, isn't it easier to balance with more surface area?

If you have a decent pack you carry with you then its not much of an issue. Find powery trees, then strap your poles to your backpack, vertically on either side, then ski. If you like it, then fine. If not then take them off and ski with them.

I have to agree it is a liberating feeling, but I don't like the possibility of cratering and then spending the next 20 mins fishing all my gear up. Thats why I just strap them to my backpack.

hell yeah snapped 3 pairs of poles early this season and just started rocking no poles everywhere. Shit is fun as hell so long as your skis are wide enough

today i was skiing park w/o poles and decided to take a run in some trees without the poles and had fun i was actually grabding trees as i was skiing

ive heard that it's bad form to rely on your poles for balance, so maybe dropping them and skiing powder would actually help your technique and make you a better skier

but chop and trees are really difficult without poles, you feel like a cat without whiskers

but yeah for wide open turns in deep snow you wouldnt really need them at all, so i guess it depends on conditions

telescoping poles are the future!

inagine skiing no poles on something mellow, you are relaxed and calm, when suddenly you find your self in a gnar chute with no escape! thinking quicly you whip out your telescoping poles (KACHINK!!!) like goddam lightsabers and commence to shred the aformentioned gnar

because if you ride a narrow ski on the pow, your deeper in the powder and more likley to use your poles when riding around.

but with fat skis your on top of the pow

you need poles only for ballance and for moving yourself around

well i got the ballance part down, and my skis are so fat that i'm just able to skate around in the flat pow pow spots.

Poles were used when skis were skinny and straight, to push yourself up over the pow and turn. When your skis are fat you can just surf the snow no need to push out of anything.

It's funny how people are saying they NEED poles in powder while 99% of you probably don't have baskets wide enough to support anything in powder. What's the point of a pole plant when your pole doesnt plant but sinks in 2 feet and has no grip... it's all in your head.
