No poles good for balance?

if you're not used to riding with no poles it is harder, if you are used to it then i suppose it would be easier. personally i find it hard to anything without poles, but that's because i've been using poled for 14 years now and it just feels unnatural not to have poles in my hand while i'm skiing.

in mw alot of people ski without poles. it just takes some getting used to.....but we dont really need them for much here, they just get in the way

This cant be judged sceintifically yes it will give you better balance and they also support in shitty situations but its really just a matter of preference.

I dont know if it gives you better balance but i know when im learning stuff, no poles is good cause the poles wont get in your way, also like when i fall hard and i have poles my fingers get crushed sometimes so thats why i sometimes drop the poles too.

i completely disagree also. if he learned with no poles than sure it probably is easier for him to not use poles. but i learned with poles and i feel naked without my poles i feel goofy

basically, at face value, skiing WITH poles will give you better balance- picture a tight rope walker with a long pole. however, if you ski for a while without poles, your overall sense of balance will improve

its like asking an old dude that has worn glasses for the last 50 years if contacts are better, truth is that the people saying no have never tried it. and the people saying yes probably dont ride with poles. I plan on giving no poles a shot in the park this year, like a good 2 or 3 days and imma see whats up and write a blog

I think riding without poles is incredible valuable to becoming a better skier. Im sure the majority of people that think this is completely untrue have not ridin without poles since they were a kid. Backcountry riding 99% of the time requires poles unless you have a sled like andy, pep, and Pollard. Park riding does not require poles ever. Yes it is different, but why are people switching to shorter poles while riding urban and park? Because they get in the way and can also increase injury in certain scenarios. I Personally have recieved 2 blackeyes from riding with poles landing switch. The future of style will be derived from the no pole movement. Lets Face it! Unless you think the Hunting Yeti crew has bad style?

skiing with no poles is like gettin head from a dude... it might feel kinda good until you look down and realize your gay....

it helps me on rails, but i think its more of a psychological thing, i'm not afraid to fall because i can catch myself, whereas with poles falling sucked because i was afraid of stabbing myself, so i would just tense up and fall and die

im goin no poles this year, but when i didnt use em in summer jams, i felt smoother and steezier, also i was more balanced, but in terms of style, probably all in my head

reason i would do it is because you can do some serious damage to yourself with poles in the park, plus if theres no powder they aren't really needed, you can just skate it.

do you realize how many times that has been said?

fuck off with your no pole hate, shit's done and over with,

word.

i had soo much fun last year going no poles. it made everything easy, and made just straight up riding and goofing around much more fun. plus grabs are a piece of cake.

Until last year i had only used 'properly' (pole upside down grab under basket 90 degree angle with the elbow bla bla bla) sized poles in all of my skiing, park and otherwise. However last year i finally decided to see what skiing no poles in the park was really all about, i skied much of the last 2 months of my season without poles and decided that i liked several things about it: not awkward feeling on rails, less getting in the way of my grabs and i guess it felt a bit stylier in general too. But i also disliked a few things, i really use my poles in my general skiing and normally when i go skiing i dont just sit in the park the entire day (squaws just too tempting), i really use my poles alot getting speed for rails and boxs, i have a tendency to stop when im skiing with friends and watch what they do and found that alot of the time i really wished i had poles to get just a little more speed for the feature in fron of me, and lastly i felt like a complete idiot in the lift line, lets face it, no poles and steep lift lines dont mix. Then for the about the last 2 weeks of the season and all but one of the days so far this season i used my old poles from about ages 5-7. I personally found these poles perfect, short enough they arent in the way, and long enough that i can use them to get speed on flat ground and keep myself in place in steep mazes. I tried to use my long poles for park one day earlier this season and got so frustrated that i switched to no poleing it, which made me almost equally as frustrated. I will probably never use a different lenght of poles for park skiing ever again.

Me and my short poles, son.

in short: No pole haters, atleast try it, it can be fun. No polers, you probably dont ski all mountain that much. And short polers, were simply fucking B.A.

well i dont ski with poles and i have no idea how to grab with out poles pm if you know

i sort of have a idea but my mountain nobody has poles

I tried no pole for a while, and realized I can roll a pretty good joint while skiing, but they're pretty usefull.

Having no poles is pretty chill for deep, steep, super carvy lines, because you drag your hand in the snow and pretend your a surfer.

But I pretty much always use them.

how can you possibly roll a joint while skiing? like i mean without the weed getting blown around everywhere? take me under your wing good sir and enlighten me with your ways

when i ski without poles i fell like Will Ferral in Talladega nights, I dont know wat to do with my hands and they just do their own thing

No poles is good for grabs (duh, no poles to block you) but on the rails I find it easier with poles, personal preferance I guess

No poles = Best for jumps.

Short poles = Best for rails/boxes.

Regular poles = Best for BC/All-Mountain.

Pretty simple stuff people.

it definately helps with balance IMO. i was hitting a rail one day then i was like ayyy ima ditch these poles. it was so weird at first and i had trouble balancing, but then i could clean it all the time. went back to poles and i was greasin err.

I feel weird with out poles, I kind of have a ritual where i do like two pole pushes before i hit a box/rail/jump

When i ride no poles, i feel like i never have enough speed

i used to ski without poles all the time and i loved it.. jumps or on rails, it just went really well. i personally think that with poles u have more balance because there away from your body (comes from the idea of ppl walking on ropes with that loong pole) so im pretty sure u have more balance, but its what ever you like best. i know ppl who cant ski without poles and some who hate skiing with poles...

I hated on people skiing with no poles until I busted my wrist last season (hit with a fucking hockey puck while reffing a game >.< )

I rode without poles/filmed for 2 weeks and thought it was hella fun on groomers/rollers/rails but absolutely hated it in the deep stuff/bumps. Fernie isn't really a no pole hill.

i rarely use polls i like skiing with and without i dont find much of a difference unless skiing pow.

i use them simply because i spend too much time outside the park, when i find i really need them. in the park they basically just get in the way, but out on the real mountain i need em

I ski on and off with poles. I just keep my poles at my crotch anyways most of the time unless I'm in the trees or moguls. I didn't start skiing with poles till last year either. It's really preference. The problem I see with skiing is that people depend on poles too much to the point where they won't even ski without them sometimes. Honestly, drop the poles sometime. It's nice.

PS: People who say skiing without poles is gay. Please go watch IDEA.

yah it took me thirteen years to finally switch to no poles and i have to say it doesnt help really with balance although in my opinion it makes it a lot easier to spin on and stuff and its so much easier to throw tricks and do grabs on jumps...but thats just my opinion...

also i went thirteen years with poles and it also felt extremely unnatural for me when i first started doing no poles but after a couple of weeks with no poles its just like skiing normal. It probably actually helps your balance with just normal skiing but not on rail i dont think. it makes it so you cant get unbalanced cuz if you do then youre screwed and youll just fall.

i rode all of last year without poles.

ive rode this season with poles and soo far ive been nailing 270 on/off cleaner and swtch ups cleaner. poles definally make a difefrence. i do find it easier to grab without poles tho. thats it tho!
