No poles = better style

off topic butttt.

if i turn on any edit, and i mean any edit, and the skiers don't have poles i immediately close the window and watch something else.

I feel the op is the right direction.. Sorta, using no poles to learn keeping your arms down and grabbing during spins dosnt sound like a bad idea

man you are missing out on some good skiing. have you watched tom wallisch's superunknown edit? it's pretty good...

I ski just park. My hill is tiny. But I guess some people can pull off no poles pretty well, but it would seem like a hassle for me. I need to push to get speed for a lot of things at my hill.

I know Alan Lam doesn't always use poles, probably because he does a lot of inline. he can pull it off though.

Tried to it today on some mini rails, learned 3 new tricks and had much better style.

Now obviously if I'm in the powder or on groomers I'm going to have poles, but for dynamically park use, its not a bad idea to try. I plan on giving it a go next time I go skiing.

i find either way to be the same.... all how im feeling on a particular day.... no pole days are fun but i try to keep the poles for all tricks

I broke my thumb, and was forced not to use poles. I think it's easier to add style, and there is less risk of injuring yourself if you fall.

here's where you are wrong, i understand that he has perfect landings with crazy tech, but henrik and phil have the best style.

I disagree, to each their own.

Tom has a more technical, precise, up right style. He lands basically standing straight up, and performs all his rail tricks the same way.

Henrik and b-dog have a much lower center of gravity (maybe due to their height), they stay confined, occasionally letting their arms wave when they nollie/press or something like that. They also appear to not even jump onto stuff, they stay super compact when they ride. And obviously they wear different outerwear sizes which I think compliments their riding style.

Well then. Apologies to you my friend, I haven't ran into many people that do. I'm wrong. But more importantly, wrong on the internet.

I do have one pair of rental poles that stays in my work locker that I use when I'm teaching. I'll give those back at the end of the season. The rental shop gave them to me to use when I'm working though.

Just talking about this today.. Every now and then, I'll lose the poles and run few laps with my hands in my pockets. It definitely makes a difference when I pick the poles up again. I flail half as much on booters and it seems like my hands are really still when I am hitting rails. People make a big deal with skiers that don't use poles but in all honesty, there are skiers out there that make it look just as steezy as if they had their sticks.

Haha, yeah right and maybe sagged baggy pants improve your technique - if you moved your legs your pants would fall down so you have to throw your shoulders really hard...

You pole plant when you're on a rail?

If you read up top I said that this only applies to park skiing, obviously in powders or on groomers you need poles to ski properly and with the correct technique, but in primarily park, no poles cant hurt.

Wait do you ride in MN? If so I ride Hyland! And I understand the need to push for speed thing at like afton or buck but at hyland if you need a little bit of speed you can just take a few skates. And the first day i rode no poles it was weird for me too but after that I got used to it

stepp almost never uses poles so not a good example and yea you're logic is dumb, tom wallish isn't the only skiier with style, and poles should not really be affecting your balance that much - if they are you're just not very good.

the only reason i ever ski without poles is if i break mine an dont feel like paying any money for useless park poles. i personally perfer poles just because im so used to having something in my hand

Poles definitely help with powder and big mountain type stuff where keeping your balance and initiating turns is tougher, but let's be real. Riding no poles is sooo much smoother feeling and there's way more freedom. Groomed=no poles. Anything else=poles

Disagree 100%. If I wanna really get into it on groomers it helps a lot to have poles. Also when I see video of myself I find that my overall stance and form is much better when I'm holding poles.

Alright I'll give you that. Poles are definitely a balance plus, but when you're just cruising, chillin, or whatever, no poles just sets you free. Or it sets me free, anyway.

completely agree.... learn to ski with no poles that way when you start using them you hardly ever rely on them and you look better.

i agree with you but your logic is fucking retarded.

the only reason skiing without poles helps you is this:

skiing without poles, you move your arms a certain amount to keep yourself balanced etc.when you get poles, you are not going to have to move your arms as much to achieve the same amount of balance change, because you have more weight in your hands.

if you ski without poles for a long time, and end up barely moving your arms while pole-less, your arms wont move with the extra weight (and balance) poles give you.

I changed my mind. After breaking my thumb and having to get it surgically corrected, I'm done using poles in the park. Too much of a hazard. Never giving them up on the rest of the mountain though.
