THAT IS SO FUCKING AWESOME YEAH RUSS FEINGOLD!!!!!! that guy is the shit. not just because he is from wisconsin, but ive talked to him and several of his aides about the USA PATRIOT ACT last year when i broke a story about it, and the shit he pointed out about it was phenominal. like, did you know that when the original one was signed, there were only 3 copies of it in full in teh senate before/during the voting? he dissented because he just wanted to read it before he signed it.
 
The act, which was passed in 2001 shortly after the incidents of September 11, contains an amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that gives governmental organizations unlimited access to any and all personal records as part of an ongoing investigation. basically, they can get any of your info, tap your phones, whatever all in the name of preventing terrorism. it was a giant bully stick that gave the govt. too much power.
 
wait why does it matter? wouldnt the people that dont want it only be the terrorist people that dont want to be found out about? wasnt the law put in to protect us? what are they jacking credit card numbers here or what? i didnt see a problem with it before.

Now why would you say that? because I am excited that the worst 'law' in the US right now is finally being toned down some? I bet you think that the Patriot Act is needed in this post 9-11 world, don't you?

Cause we don't, at all. And the act was being abused in a few cases as well. So, a law that takes away our freedoms, is being abused by some, and is completely unneeded, is being fought sucsessfully now... something that I've been wanting to see happen since it first came to be. I'm excited.

I say go eat a dick you fear mongering pussy. 3000 people died in america in the last 5 years from terrorism. That is not bad at all, if you look at all the other causes of death out there. Hell, if we could reach taht amount of deaths for MOST other ways people die, it'd be a fucking miracle. There is no need in my mind for any anti terrorism bill that goes against our basic rights in this country.

I think it's rediculous how we try to "spread freedom" throughout the world, but yet we limit ours back here at home.

1,321 people died when hurricane katrina struck New Orleans. Not to mention the entire city was destroyed. Cigarettes kill 440,000 people every year in the US. The following all kill more people than terrorism:

-Heart Diseases - 696,947

-Cancer - 557,271

-Cerebrovascular diseases - 162,672

-Chronic lower respiratory diseases - 124,816

-Accidents (Unintentional injuries) - 106,742

-Diabetes mellitus - 73,249

-Influenza and pneumonia - 65,681

-Alzheimer disease - 58,866

-Nephritis - 40,970

-Septicemia - 33,865

But why is there so much emphasis on terrorism which only 2,982 people were killed in semptember 11th??? Yes it is a terrible thing that happened, don't try to say I think that 9/11 doesn't matter, but the government acts like it is the single biggest threat to the US. Clearly I showed otherwise. Maybe they could pass an act to increase medical research or rebuild the Levy in New Orleans... dare I say ban cirgarettes???
 
freedom is gonna be a lot harder to keep when fuckers start panning on how to blow shit up. if you dont do anything suspicious the government isnt gonna tap your lines. and if they do and find nothing they arent gonna j=like keep listening to your phone conversations. trustme, the government already knows more about you than you think, so a little more info wont really hurt you.
 
Sure it's great that the government is trying to protect us, but it does limit privacy a little too much. That and the patriot act basically just targeted anybody of middle-eastern ancestry, so they may as well walk down the street and take every dark-skinned person to jail for all it did.
 
most of those things are being worked on. As for things like cigarettes and alchohol? People liek killing themselves and they deserve to die theres nothing wrong with that. But yes actually the next terrorist attack wil probably be much worse then the last and those people are innocent. Now how has the patriot act hurt you? My friends and I build Bombs on a regular basis and talk about it on the phone so...........

Wow. That was a brilliant and well thought out comment. The fact that the united states has so many different cultures and peoples is a good thing. If you want to get Klany and keep ranting on, fine, but one of the few things we have going for us is that we have a diverse population.

it did affect regular people. one of my professors took a group of students to mexico to do work for habitat for humanity or one of those organizations. as they were ready to get on their plane back to philly, security randomly grabbed two asian girls from the professors group without saying anything to anyone, and refused to tell my professor why they were detaining them. the two girls had done nothing that would get them detained; they were targeted because they looked out of place in a group of white college kids. the guards were allowed to do this under the patriot act. if that's not encroaching on someone's personal freedom, and you think instances like that are okay, then you've got issues.
 
Guys, the problems with the act is that it changes all the definitions of "terrorism". There is now "domestic terrorism" so that if you interupted a government meeting or procession on the road, you're a terrorist. Government no longer needs "reasonable doubt" to authorize a warrant to tap peoples lines or take your written records from a third party (ie: take your credit card receipts from the stores or credit card company w/o your knowledge) now they can get a warrant any time they want and if they say it has to do with terrorism then FISA courts can't deny them. However it has more often been used against the drug war than the war on terrorism. Also directly after 9/11 about 1200 new citizens or soon to be citizens were detained for minor charges such as a speeding ticket, and they were held, without right to see a lawyer, without right to call their families, they were held indeffinately without even the right to go to court for what they did. So basicly they were imprisoned without ability to be released. about 12 (of 1200) were charged with terrorism, but the rest were "suspected". Anyways you can say that they dont get the same rights as Americans because they arent citizens yet, but in the bill of rights it says all PEOPLE are given the rights, not all "CITIZENS".
 
sounds like you guys are blowing this way out of preportion, did i sense scare tactics in there^ talking about them tapping the phone line in a few seconds!! oh god! i've got nothing to hide, and neither should you. but justo that sucks, i think the patriot act deff. should be tweaked, but i dont think it should have been killed all-together.
 
um, the network is actually in place with the NSA that can tap your phone, cell phone, or computer in just a few seconds. no one's being paranoid, it's just the truth.

i'm still surprised that NO ONE has mentioned Bush breaking the law. this is big. depending on what they find, he might find himself out of a job.

hmmm... this New York Times article sure is interesting... gee, i'm glad i read it a few times. wow, Bush could be in a world of shit and the entire republican party would have a very difficult time recovering from this... i'd say this could be as bad, if not worse than Nixon and Watergate... i'm glad i voted for the other guy, whatever his name was... hot damn, i'm glad i'm not in the White House right now... i bet there will be some serious resignations, firings, and charges pressed on high ranking officials in the NSA and at the White House... i wonder if they'll even target Bush... serious shit.

in all honesty, if you thought the Patriot Act stuff was a big deal, this whole debacle Bush has gotten himself into is on a whole different level. he is in a world of shit.
 
Possibly because we don't have a NYT subscription and have no idea what you're talking about, might want to be more specific, or link to an article on the website or AFP or something. Do you mean the whole "Authorizing Spying" thing? I read a blurb about that, seemed like the Bush we know and love.

turn on CNN if you want to hear about the article- it's all they've been talking about. i couldn't find it on NYT's site.

basically, Bush told the NSA that they could/should tap the phones and read all emails coming into or going out of the US just a short time after 9/11. not only is complying with such orders illegal, even giving an order like that is illegal and could possibly spell the end of his administration. we'll see how it goes, though.
