No helmet rant

helmets hurt style. pros dont wear them. the only cool helmet arnt really helmets at all(aka bern). they make you look gay. racers and old people wear them.

here's a quote from a mountain biking friend:

"if you bike[ski] at a high level for long enough YOU WILL CRASH, this is just a fact, it's unavoidable. everybody will do an endo, hit a tree and fuck up many jumps. YOU WILL CRASH HARD and YOU WILL CRASH MANY TIMES. if you don't, you're probably riding a stationary bike in a gym. so you have to wear a helmet, or you will get really hurt, that simple."

granted DH is alot more dangerous then skiing and all the pros wear full body armor, but the general point applies to skiing.

that said, I really dont care if you wear a helmet or not, just sayin that I do.

im gonna wear one i have hit my head plenty of times even doing summer rails, i really could care less what it looks like and if you care more about looks than being safe it is your decision in the end and you will have to live with whatever the result.

well obviously it wasnt that severe was it.

to the people who are liek, oh why do you care, people will do it anyways. I care because i dont like hearing stories on the news on how people are getting fucked up because of not wearing a helmet.

and wh ever is saying helmets dont do anything is a fuking retard. Like nomesteven said, why do you think they make you wear helmets on motorcycles( well in canada atleast), and seatbelts in cars? well like those helmets have been proving countless times to FUCKING PROTECT YOUR HEAD.

In quebec the rule is no helmet, no park for you. I think its the law now. and thankyou nomensteven your being a hero in this thread.

for park i think everyone needs a helmet, but powder isnt necessary unless youre huckin cliffs, but i wear one all the time

dude u have no idea what ure talking about my DOCTOR said it was the worst kind you can get and when u lose ure memory for an extended period of time (longer than a few hours) its called brain damage and youd have a severe brain injury not a mild one which is a concusion, and just to clear it up cuz u obviously dont fuckin know a concusion is when u hit u head so hard it distrupts the signals in ure brain and a severe one is when u hit it so hard u bruise it, maybe u shud atleast no what it is b4 u start telling ppl when they get a bad concusion their gunna forget who their parents are

it isn't really that they are dumb, it is because people have a subconscience death wish. People want to die, it is the whole point in life.

helmets? malarky! they kill more people than they save...

seriously though, if youre going to do something where you could crack your head. put on a little plastic hat before you continue your head crackin lifestyle...

here's a scenario:

I used to wear my helmet all the time. I believe I SHOULD still wear a helmet everyday. I don't though. I wear my hat. I don't feel safer but I like how i can just stick my hat in my pocket when a hike. i don't care how light the helmet is, they're still way more bulky than a hat. it's hard to quantify...but wearing a hat just feels better. i also think i benefit safety-wise by the lack of confidence wearing a hat inspires, so on days where i just want to take it easy i wear a hat.

that said, i'm going to start wearing a helmet more again just to be sure, but i certainly see why people would want to ski w/o them

riding dh and skiing are on completely different levels. any time that i am on my dh bike going downhill, my helmet is on. on the other hand, i will only wear a helmet skiing if I know i am gonna get into some shit. snow is a lot softer than dirt/rock. i feel ski helmets definitely give you a false sense of security. i made the mistake of wearing a R.E.D. full face dh riding, and leaned better after one good crash. that doesn't mean that helmets are not good for the majority, but they do not provide the protection that most people think they do. I know that a ski designed helmet would not give me the protection i need if i crashed skiing the way i do.

pretty much your brain floats in the fluid like you said a concussion is when you hit your head so hard, it bashes against your skull then bounces back and hits the otherside, bruising your brain, concussions are different for everyone, someone can cget a major concussion are recover in a week, normally younger people, teenagers and children take longer to recover. People under 21 arent supposed to play contact sports for atleast 2 weeks or else they run the risk of second impact i forget the other word, but pretty much if you hit your head, sometimes not ever hard enough to get another concussion, your brain swells and it most cases you die, there are a bunch of insadints like this, some kid a couple towns over from me just died playing lacrosse a couple months ago

yea and when it hit ure head if its hard enouh it disrupts the signals causeing u to get knocked out, u dont all of a sudden loose all ure memory and make ure parents cry, makin ppl wear helmets is like trying to make everyone wear condoms its just not guna happen

yeah i agree. THe other day i was night skiing and i was just doin groomers ,no jumps. It was really heavy crud and i went to go switch(goin pretty fast)caught slammed really really hard. like instantly on to my head and i was soo dazzed.if i wasent wereing a helmet i think i would have got a really bad concusion(sp).you just never know when your goin to fall ,even on the easiest things.

HA, i dont wear a helmet because they are
1. too expencive
2. less comfortable than my hats
3. pain in the ass to cary around
4. gets in the way when trying to smoke in your jacket on the lift
5. i have been falling by accident and on purpose while having fun since i was 4 and i have learned to not hit my head
6. im not goofy as fuck and i can fall IN CONTROL
7. i never go OUT OF CONTROL
8. i saw a kid on NS make a gay thread about it and it made me think wearing them is GAY

the only day i didnt wear one i had a head trauma.

you know it s just a matter of probabilty of injury.

no one said helmets make you indestructible;

they just reduce the probabilty of a severe trauma.

just do what you want, but i think it s dumb to ski rails without a helmet.

i dont see the point of risking severe damage for... wait for it... nothing.

there are many helmets that looks just fine, and are very confortable.

watch jon olsson, he has a helmet and doesnt look gay cause he skis good.

what makes you look gay is not your helmet or your hat, it s the fact that you are a rider or a poser.

ps : in most skateparks helmets are mandatory. so the "we cant force people, it si a free country" argument is just bullshit.

I don't think they can/should require it.

What they will do guaranteed is add it to their liability clause. Next time you go for your lift ticket or season pass you will have to sign the same waiver, only now the waiver includes a helmet clause that says something like "we strongly recommend a helmet, by not wearing one you assume all risks for yourself and others etc...

It will be here for 08/09 I am almost sure of it.

oh yea and im not saying that helmets will protect you from everything, im just saying its worth wearing one and they will do alot more than not wearing one. Im not trying to be all like" WEAR A HELMET OR ELSE" just saying i recommened it.

I have had multiple concussions in my lifetime(only 1 from skiing), some were more serious than others. The one that I did have from skiing, I was knocked out briefly and ended up on an oxygen tank at the ski patrol base. After talking to a doctor I found out I most likely would have died if I was not wearing a helmet. Took me 2 days to feel back to normal and find out that I had also broken my wrist. That was almost 8 years ago and I still ride with a helmet. Although, I do leave it off if I am planning on just cruising and definitely not in the park.

If peoples heads are too big to wear a helmet, let them be. When they get injured, less idiots will be on the hills.

I took a pretty cool crash on a rail today, my head hurts like hell, but Im am still ok, I cant image what ill look like if I didnt have one

Anyway, helmets are really cool now!

that's just stupid.

anyway I dont care if people dont wanna wear em, but i HATE the rollerblading industry and how sponsors wont give you shit for your footy if you are wearing a helmet. seriously fuck that. whoever is in charge of that decision should crack their head open to see how fun it is. i'm never buying a rollerblading movie in my life unless that changes.

I hate my helmet. It makes me look like a Fucking Natzi idk why i bought it ( bad lt.) anywho i wear it but i hate it so sometimes i dont wear it. even though its saved my life like 5 times

yea after today im always wearing a helmet, i always do but heres my story.

at a local rail jam the liftie goes "Do a 3 on the last jump," i had a good shot at winning so i said fuck it. its a nice lil 20 ft step down. i prematurely carved and got to 270, whipped back and slammed my head, luckily the only thing i got was a bruise and possibly a broken finger. if i wasntt wearing a helmet i would not be here writing this story. btw, i snowboard if that makes any difference.

Yeah in my city it's mandatory to wear helmets while skateboarding/rollerblading/biking/scootering or whatever else you're doing. It is such a good idea to wear a helmet.

My principal's son, was snowboarding at my ski club (not a member, a guest) and was in the terrain park. He decided to go off one of the big kickers with no helmet or no spotters. So he did, and just as he went off, he saw that there were a few people in the landing area getting up after a minor fall. He tried to swerve his body and his board so he would miss them, but he couldn't, and he fell head first. He had to be airlifted to Sick Kids hospital in Toronto.. He was put into a coma for a long time (can't remember how long exactly) and forgot EVERYTHING. My mom and her friend went to go see him, and for the first time, he opened his eyes. It was only for a brief second though. He was fed through a tube, and he was basically in this coma, not moving, for a long time. Once he was out, he was still in the hospital, and they had to teach him how to walk again and partially talk. It was so hard for the principal, he had someone fill in for him for about a year. Then he went to rehab, and it took very long for him to recover. He basically fucked up a side of his brain or something and forgot basically everything. I don't think he had to retake classes because it was one side of the brain where it didn't include skills like that, I think.

Everyone in his family was going through so much pain and couldn't bear it. I remember the principal saying to my mom that he would never be the same again. That he would never be the same Sacha he knew him to be. You seriously don't know how horrible this was, for the kids, the families, the parents and just his friends and relatives who knew him. The whole school was in shock, for this was heartbreaking.

Moral of the story: ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a helmet doesnt make you invinsable, full face and motorcycle helmets are in a different league than the normal skiing/biking helmet, but at that point you are hitting your head so hard, the only thing the helmet does is keep your head from getting cut up and split open, you will most likely wind up concussed

Most kids on NS only care about their style and for them wearing an helmet isnt COOL. That mostly the reason of why alot of kis arent wearing one. But whatever... I agree 100% with nomensteven.
