No helmet culture

Helmets do not stop injuries or death, they reduce the severity of injuries.

This sentence makes no sense. Maybe learn to write.

OP i think you just had a skewed sample there. a bunch of super into-it riders hitting pre-season rails isn't going to accurately reflect the general ubiquity of helmets these days

i'll be the first to admit that riding without a helmet looks and feels dope. but...

I'd say that the vast majority of recreational skiers wear helmets, when you ski around resorts like Breck, PC, Mammoth, etc most if not all people you see are wearing helmets.

Anecdotes really aren't enough proof. Especially in a discussion about someones health and safety.

It is widely known that helmets do not prevent concussions, do you know what happens when you get a concussion?

Concussions aren't the only form of head trauma?

You're trying to argue agains't facts that helmets in fact do reduce blunt force trauma to the head, as well as help even out the area of impact, which can be very small if you hit your head on a rail, ski, or anything along those lines.

This is just a fucking stupid position by you to take..

I clearly said that wearing a helmet is more safe.

I clearly said that helmets are protective against hard objects and slightly absorb the blow.

Neither of these things stop your brain from slamming into the inside of your skull.

Bro did you hit your head on a few rails or something? You're not being coherent.

Can you guys really not read that sentence because I forgot a comma? Jesus christ.

I edited my statement because everyone clearly wants to turn it into something its not, this is what I meant.

The comma completely changes the outcome of the comment? Are you serious?

I can see why it reads weird, but every other comment I made is about how helmets are more safe so why don't you use your brain to critically think?

Read an interesting article recently.

"A neck that is stronger, thicker or aligned in a forward posture -- with the ears ahead of rather than aligned with the shoulders -- may reduce the amount of energy transferred to the brain during an impact, thus reducing the risk and severity of injury," said Carrie Esopenko, an assistant professor at the School of Health Professions and the report's senior author.

Basically some people are more prone to brain injuries during a crash than other people.

I think that is also the reason why f1 racers always work out their neck to prevent injuries on crashes

For those of you that do not wear a helmet, I encourage all of you to get on a chairlift with jerries that really enjoy putting down the bar first.

Before you edited your comment like a little bitch, you practically said

"here are two instances where helmets don't help, and also, don't even try to argue that helmets are safe".

So in this case you would be that retard.

But we clearly all agree so just let this thread die.

LOL you're personally attacking me now? Don't even get me fucking started dude, there are NO posts saying helmets are worthless, you made that up in your mind.

Evan can you just delete this thread. To many obstinate folks not interested in anything of substance just straw man contrarian arguments. my curiosity has been answered.

F1 has HANS devices, but they work out their neck a ton, just to be able to corner with a helmet, would need it without helmet as well though ;)

Just moved down to SLC from Washington. Have been up to “Alta park” and the bonezone and I was the only one wearing a helmet at either spot. I completely understand that not wearing a helmet feels good and looks better, yet for me that doesn’t out weight the risk of getting a head injury. Maybe I slam more than normal or maybe I’m a pussy? idk helmets just seem more common in WA. Any folks that have been here longer got any ideas?

i live up here and i usually wear a helmet if im doing something uncomfortable or skiing the resort. usually not wearing one if im hiking a pvc tube setup

Wearing a helmet saved my life. Also, have too many concussions not to be wearing one. Not that it prevents everything, but it definitely helps.

some of you are getting your wires crossed. TBI's happen no matter what even with helmets. That doesn't make it ultimately safer, sure, But helmets do help. Drop the bro science bullshit and stop spreading ignorance. Helmets can be the difference between eating out of a feeding tube the rest of your life or not.

Well Micheal Schumacher, 7x F1 World Champion, WAS wearing a helmet when he suffered a TBI skiing in France. He's been in a veg state ever since eating out of a tube. To me, that is a fate far worse than death, even if you have millions of dollars like Schmachaer and have the best care in the world available to you. Sometimes you get so worried about not dying you forget how to live.

I'm in SLC as well and once you get up to the resort parks during the season most people are wearing helmets. To each their own though.

Phil Casabon once said " If I wear a helmet I'm planning to hit my head, and if I don't put it on Im not planning on doing so"

Wise words I was going to bring this up glad you did !

I've been at the "alta park" almost everyday and I honestly feel bad for not wearing a helmet cause of the influence it gives off. I've been skiing a long time and feel 100% comfortable hucking my meat so when I'm at a PVC sesh I'm pretty much never wearing a helmet. I don't want to sound cocky, but at those sessions there are a lot of tricks that I do that most people aren't attempting and I hate when I influence others to try gnarly stuff that they aren't comfortable with. Any day I'm riding the lifts or in the street you will always find me wearing a helmet. I'm pretty sure this is what a lot of people at the alta park are doing. You see a lot of people not wearing helmets during preseason because of the low consequence, but will see them wearing them when they are lapping the park.

A helmet will indeed decrease the force in which your brain slams inside your skull. This is helmet 101 my guy

How is this even a discussion, its like crashing in F1 would be better without HANS and helmet and safety devices... like they "did back then"

Do whatever you want, but the whole "it's pre-season so I'm not going to wear a helmet" thing always seemed a little backwards to me. A helmet has a lot of uses, one of which is stopping your head from cracking open on hard shit, like rails and boxes. My helmet saved my bacon in a similar scenario. It was pre-season, I was rusty, and I slid out on a box and smacked my head on the corner. It left a nice dent in my helmet that would have been my skull. More often than not skiing is the most dangerous when you are the most comfortable.

I got a pretty bad concussion a couple of years ago (wearing a helmet). ended up going to a concussion specialist that had a lot of interesting info. helmets do basically nothing for a concussion. helmets' purpose is to stop your skull from cracking.

I treat people as they treat me, I'm completely nice, and I would argue helpful, with people who aren't negative to me first.

Also, that dude is a troll, again im a completely reasonable and companionate person towards normal members, huge difference here.
