No Girls in the Park?

I don't know why but it seems that whenever I'm in the parks I never see any girls. I'm from the Midwest, so maybe that has something to do with it, but why is this? Im a guy so I have no idea.

I can relate to that a small amount in Minnesota. I do see chicks in the park when im there but like 3 at most. They kill it tho. But Midwest has a smaller amount of skiers because of smaller slopes and less interest because they aren't that special to ski on.

I assume a large part of the problem is how badly we treat the girls.

If I heard that, I would be not super motivated to give it a shot. We need to support and encourage the ladies to be rad as fuck, just like they are.

I remember when my friend and I first started skiing park guys would yell from the lift to us to get out of park. We would get cut off all the time. People would ride into us quite frequently too. Not because we were in the way though, like we weren't standing on landings or in the way. A lot of the time it would be near the lift line while my friend would unbind and stuff. It was always the same crew of snowboarders too. It was fucking shitty. It made us hesitant to ride park at first but then we got over it.

I'm not sure if thats why there aren't many girls. I feel like that was more of a local problem for my friend and I haha. Female participation in action sports is always less than male participation so it makes sense. I would love to see more girls in park though, just wish I knew how to get more girls into it.

Same goes for anyone shredding really, but I haven't really seen too many guys shitting on a girl who slays. I could imagine, however, that a girl who is just starting out and trying to get better could get a lot of shit. I mean anyone who is in the park and just starting out will have a hard time getting used to the flow and etiquette of the trail, and will probably be the target of some angry comments ("That gaper just cut me off! What a fuckhead!"), but I could see how being a beginner girl would be extra difficult because of the concept that girl's skiing is behind guy's skiing. Honestly I think the solution is to just be more accepting to ANYONE who is just beginning to ski park. If we stop getting angry at the "gapers" and "scrubs" in the park, and instead just approach them and explain what they are doing wrong then not only will the female community grow, but the community as a whole will as well.

Well, if you approached them politely and tried to ask them to do something basic like not standing on a landing or not cutting across an inrun without checking to see if someone is dropping and they didn't listen, then feel free to get mad at them. These are the people that we don't want in the community anyway. It's the people that are trying their best to have fun while staying out of the way of other people that deserve to be treated with kindness. If you try to help and someone is a dick to you, then by all means, be a dick back and try to make sure that that person either

a) Stops being a dick and realizes you are trying to help

b) Leaves the park and never comes back

Yeah this is really true. I'm not from a ski town or anything. Fuck, some people around here still think parks are for snowboarders only. In fact there's a sign that says snowboard park at one of the hills here. So I think some girls don't even know that it's possible to get into this stuff.

When I moved to college I had 3 roommates and 4 friends across the hall. Turns out 4 of them snowboard, 1 skis, and my roommate skied once and wanted to learn this season. I mentioned that I ski park and stuff and they were all shocked and didn't even know that girls actually did that. So I think that's a possible factor.

I definitely get more stoked/inspired to see a girl throw down than a guy(sorry guys). It's like if I see a guy do something, I'm like shit that was dope. But if I see a girl do something similar, in my head Im thinking that I really wanna do that too and sometimes seeing another girl do something it makes it seem more doable for me. I don't know how to explain it. The same might be true for other girls but I can't speak for all.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is if there was more content/exposure from girls and more girls even knew about freeskiing maybe they would give it a shot too. And maybe even find a passion in it. That shit gets me so stoked.

It's also possible, and I think quite likely, actually, that girls tend to lack interest for these action sports due to a societal push for girls to do things typically considered "girly" and guys to do things considered "manly." There's a possibility that a natural, biological difference between average men and women would lead more men to do action sports then women, but I think it is hard to argue that men and women are given an equal societal push to do action sports.

I was having this conversation with a girl friend of mine that shreds and that is also the other park instructor. She told me that she thinks that having another girl to shred with her would motivate her more to learn. I think that girls usually aren't as competitive as guys so they learn by helping each other rather then having that I want to be better than my friend mentality. I also taught this girl in my park class with 6 other guys all about 12 and I notice that she needed more explanation on how to do the trick rather then her trying by her self and learning from her mistake

I'm always trying to teach my younger sister new stuff in the park (she skis too). Anyways one day we were out trying some stuff out in the park at Trollhaugen, which is a pretty male dominant hill. And all of a sudden a border chick showed up in the park, which is pretty rare.. and I don't usually compliment snowboarders, but she was pretty good. Eventually after doing a couple laps she saw my sister shredding. She came over to the top where we were resting and she just started congratulating my sister on being a girl in the park and that girls need to stick together and all that stuff. Anyways than my sister just ditched me and went off, and her and this random girl just stuck together for the rest of the day.

I guess my point here is that if other girls are so rare in the park that this girl felt the need to go up and start congratulating my sister than there is definitely an issue with the atmosphere in the parks. We need to change some stuff, and no I don't mean start painting all the rails pink, but just be more excepting to the ladies. Cause all these other stories I'm seeing on this thread are showing that we definitely arn't.
