Nintendo's new console sounds crazy

It's about as official as official gets: Nintendo's next console will have a six-inch touchscreen and be a portable console by itself.

In addition to those details, Nikkei (subscription required) also reports that the controller will have a camera that players can use to import images to create characters in-game with. The publication speculates that the console could come out in mid-2012 at the earliest.

Nintendo's E3 press conference will be streaming live here at gameinformer.com as soon as it gets rolling on Tuesday morning. Expect the official word then.
 
It does sound insane, but we don't know what the next gen Sony or Microsoft console holds in store, so there is nothing relative that it can be compared to. But compared to anything that commercially exists today, sure.
 
true, but its going to be ridiculous to see what they can put into something that mobile and still be an awesome at home console, wii usually seems to experiment with new game idea's and alot follow suit usually.
 
Also, this also leaves me wondering why Nintendo would confirm speculation on a product that is likely to be more than a year away. Assuming the article is true (I'm not going to speculate on that), Nintendo is not only confirming a product that may or may not run into problems between now and release, but also revealing information to competitors, who can now cook up an equally good or better product. Perhaps Nintendo is just trying to bump up it's share price, at a time when Sony is being hammered?
 
Yeah, I agree. Although, can't you already create characters using a webcam-type thing on the Playstation or Xbox? Like just the face, but still. Nintendo could just mean importing facial features, and if that was the case it's basically just a case of slimming down current hardware (which is happening as time progresses anyway).

What I would like to see from Nintendo is improved graphics though. I don't think they can carry on competing with Sony/Microsoft with their current graphics, although the Wii seems to have managed.
 
yea agreed. they need to reach out to more of the "hardcore" gamer that wants to play games with graphics and noth the same old titles over and over again.

And the price shouldnt be to bad Nintendo has always been good with pricing their stuff right. but they might step out of that who knows.
 
Repost, but yah, i can see the touch controller being canned. Just the cost of replacements would be waay to crazy. They tend to change tons of shit at e3 too.
 
my thoughts exactly. it has a 6 inch touch screen and its portable? whoop-de-doo that doesnt sound very exciting at all. its like a fancy new game boy
 
Thats what this system is aimed at, they kinda slammed out the Wii and then have been working on the new system since.

The reason they've confirmed it is because the console is finished, it is supposed to be playable at E3 in like a week. Which is also why they would confirm shit, E3 is the most important gaming thing each year so it make sense they would try and hype it up.

Personally I'm stoked to see some sick Nintendo Titles brought back in form.
 
Uhhh, are you fucking crazy? Mario Kart/64/Tennis are still unreal. Even better when you turn them into drinking games.
