Nikon D80

Hey all,
I'm not super up to date on DSLR's, but basically I'm looking for a middle of the road DSLR to take with me on my 3 month trip to Greece in the spring, and I'm hoping to spend around 1000-1300 total. I don't really have any particular convictions of Nikon vs Canon. I've read through a bunch of the DSLR threads lately, and I'm thinking about buying a D80 with a Nikkor f/2.8-4 24-85mm lens. I chose this for a few reasons, first of all, I liked the D90 a lot, but don't really need the video mode as I have tons of video equipment already, so this seemed to be a logical and cheaper alternative. I also like that it has 2 separate wheels, one for shutter speed, and one for aperture which I think is a big advantage over the D60 for example.
For those who know more than me about the topic, will this be a good choice/ are there other similar cameras I should look at?
Thanks, +K

You could score a canon 40d kit for around that price range and IMO the 40d is better than a d80.

Thanks for the post. I've read that the d40 is more of a beginner camera than the d80, whatever that means, also i have some decent lenses from a nikon film slr that would work with AF on the d80 and not the d40 or d40x.

The 40D is slightly slightly better than the D80 but...than you're shooting with a canon and yeeaaah haha

The 40d looks great, but with the D80 I can afford a faster lens. What are your thoughts? Should I splurge for the 40d and upgrade lenses later? or should I go for the nikon with a dec lens now?
Seems silly to shoot a 900 dollar camera with a stock lens.

I have the 20-135 kid and i fucking love it. I feel like a lens is a lens unless you want a huge tele or wide angle.

Hmm, after reading up, you guys may have me sold on the canon. All the cameras I've owned are canon, so I'm a bit biased. Hv20, XHA1, I briefly had an XT, and I now have a G9... Why not add a 40d?
+Karma guys, I think i'm going to go for it.

The D80 is a prime camera if you have the money to spend. I, myself own a Nikon D50 and have used it for about 2 years now, all my lens's and flashes are also Nikon. Everything is so durable, for instance, i have dropped my nikkor 18-55 lens in the snow about 3 times now, however my good friend who shoots cannon took his camera out to shoot in heavy snow and it was ruined the next day.
Hope this helps and happy shopping!
