Nikon D50

Just looking to purchase my first DSLR and this seemed like a good choice. All i am asking for is some opinions on this camera, or a better camera in the same price range.

Also, i read somewhere that you cannot use the LCD instead of the viewfinder, i dont know if this is true or false so i thought i would ask.

i have heard about the rebel XT but i wasnt sure if it was just a fad that everyone had that camera or if it really was an amazing camera, ya know...and for the person above, the D60 does not exist

D50 is a very solid camera

I suggest it highly over the rebel mostly because of build. The rebel is very small and is hard to grip comfortably. I tried both these cameras out and decided on the D50. The extra megapixels that the rebel has does not make a difference unless you plan on making posters out of your pictures.

D50+50mm 1.8+18-70mm dx=awesome

thank you so much, i was looking at other cameras becasue ive been reading a lot of feedback on the camera coming from photo freaks and i needed this comment to bring me back to earth. Thanks and i will most likely be picking one up

I also have a D50 and really like it as well. I think its a great all around entry level DSLR. I was coming from a N80 (which is a higher end film camera) and, although I lost a few features, I was pleased with my decision.

Check out dpreview.com You can do side by side comparisons of quite a few cameras and they should have pretty extensive reviews for both cameras.

i have the D70s, from what i heard the D50 is an amazing beginner DSLR camera, i say go for it. i started up on the D70s and i think all the extra settings and modes were a bit overwhelming, sometimes i get to use my dads D200 and well im completely lost with that one.

but i say go for it, checked it out at best buy. seems like a good deal. just dont get the new D40 because the lenses arent compatible with autofocus ;)

are you just saying taht because you have a lenses that you want to sell, or becasue it really is a better lenses? The lenses in this package has a zoom, does yours?

sorry about the confusion guys. the reason i thought d60, was because the new version of the d70s is the d80, so i thought the new version of the d50 was the d60. But its the d40. Which is available. And i do not think it is a downgrade from the d50, from what i can tell, but i honestly have not looked into it all that much, i am too happy with my current set up to look at other cameras.

heres a link with a legit place to buy the new D40 at. I would probably buy the body and then buy a 18-70 for your lens. But actually the 18-55 kit lens is supposed to be as sharp as the 18-70 or sharper for a hell of a lot less money, so i dont know.

nevermind with all this d40 bullshit, talk I have been spewing. Just read that the D40 does not have its own auto-focus build into the camera, so you cant stick any f mount lens on there. and its built to be light, not strong. So if weight is not an issue get a D50. Not that the D50 is heavy or anything, my D200 doesnt bug me and that is a ton heavier than the cameras we are talking about.

thanks for the input, i read that about the D40 a while back and that is y i changed my mind to a D50. I plan on getting better lenses, obviously this will not be my only lenses forever. But would this lense that is packaged with the camera suffice until i could "upgrade" to a "still" lense? And when i do upgrade what specific lense should i get?...a 50mm? sorry for all the questions i am just very new to this and thanks to you guys im learning quite a bit, so thaank you

i was just looking and the body of the camera is 450 so the package that i was looking at the lense is only $50. Is this lense so bad that i should just save the $50 for a better lense?

depends on how long you will have to wait to get a better lens. If you have to wait a few months, just get the cheap lens and it will allow you to shoot and learn, then when you get better lenses you can still use your cheap one when you dont want to be caring super expensive glass around. I would by the 18-55 Nikkor tho, because it is super sharp for a hundred bucks, I think it is a lot better lens then the 28-80 (?) that you were looking at. Plus at 18 you have a lot more options with shooting then if you have a lens that only goes as wide as 28mm. Also, good idea with getting a cheaper body and better lenses. Way to many people get that backwards. The lenses are what are important.

it's always worth it to get the good glass versus a bad store brand glass. i shoot d200 with a macro 18-70 nikkor and it's gooood glass.

Just checked on amazon and they have the D50 paired with the 18-55 for just 610, seems pretty good, no tax or shipping either. Tax and shipping on the other site is a bit ridiculous, like $50 for both.

so i ordered it tonight for 626 from amazon with the 18-55 nikkor lense....im so excited for next week to come. Thanks everyone for all the help!

remember as you progress and build up an arsenal of equipment that it is important to get high quality glass, especially with digital bodies. and if you go telephoto, make the step and buy them with image stabalization. good luck and have fun with your cam.

fuck, i just checked amazon.com (where i ordered it from) and i dont fucking get it till the 4-10

meh, meh, that is so gay...i want it now

god damnit, i just got my D50 for 630 or whatever, then im on cnet today and see that some sister site has the fucking D80 with the same lenses for the exact same price......GOD DAMNIT, I needed an outlet for my frustration

I paid 400 or so refurb from nikon for my d50. Its coming tomorow so I'll see how it looks. I also got a cheap lens on ebay just so I can start to get to know the cam.

ok, so im not mad anymore because the site that had it for that price had it for one day as an after christmas blowout thing, so if they offer it next year ill just trade D50 for D80, but right now i am more than content with my cam. And sure it may be a bit to slow for sequences, but im ok with that considering the amazing "still" pictures it can take, if anyone has any doubts go on flickr.com and enter the Nikon D50 group.

Here it is finally
