Im just getting into "Real" photography. Before i was using cheap cameras just to catch fast pics on the go. Now i want to start getting into the more artistic parts of photography. Ive been doing research on the Nikon D40 10.2 megapixle version. and it looks like a good choice.

Do you guys think this would be a good camera for the novice looking to improve. Will it have all of the adiquite features for taking "money shots?"

and if you guys have this camera could you recomend a good lens for it. Would auto focus be better than manual focus?

I have a d50 (d40 is the new d50) and I love it. I had been using an old 35mm and a cheap digi. If you buy a new lens for it it will most likely have autofocus. There is a switch on my cam to make it manual which I find myself using more than the auto. Also saves on battery life.

D40/D80 is a bad choice. It only uses lenses with motors in it,which are no lower then $300.D50/D70 don't use a lens with a motor in them, and lenses are a lot more cheaper then,so then you can buy more lenses, flashes, pocket wizards, light stands, ect.
