Nikon D4

Looks like an amazing camera. Uncompressed output through the hdmi port is clutch, hoping it's a sign of things to come in their lower end models
 
I also like that they didn't go crazy with the megapixels. I keep seeing rumors about a 36mp sensor on the D700 replacement...so dumb
 
i don't see how having a super high res image is "dumb", but if you want 35+ mpx then just go digital MF
 
Digital MF generally costs thousands more than what the D800 is projected to cost. Some people think it's "dumb" because of poor high ISO performance and really large files that result in a slow burst speed, but as of now a camera with 30+ mp will be aimed mainly at studio and landscape photogs who don't need either. If you want speed and ISO performance, buy a body oriented at PJ/action
 
I understand where you're coming from but it is a complete change from the 12.1mp D700. I can guarantee you the majority of D700 owners would gain nothing with 3 TIMES more megapixels. They would only get much larger file sizes, worse iso performance, less dynamic range, and all the other problems that come up with ridiculously high megapixel cameras. Yeah sure go ahead and make a large MP camera for the studio photographers, but don't completely change a camera that fits the needs of the majority of photographers who chose to shoot full frame. It's a replacement, not a new model
 
The D4 is beautiful, no other words to describe it imo, i can't wait until we get them at my store so i can really check it out and see the features first hand.

i'm super excited about the 85mm 1.8G lens as well, i think i'll definitely have to purchase that one!

Holy mother. I want this so bad. Price is supposed to be $6000 right? That's actually not that bad. Maybe if I save up for a few more months...

Maybe I'll wait for the D800 and save some money. I don't know. It still looks like an awesome camera. Expandable to 204,000 ISO, what the fuck is it night vision!? That's still awesome though. Video specs look great too. Looks like an all around awesome camera. I don't even know what to think about the new QXD cards or whatever they're called. It sounds good with the faster writing speeds though.
 
The D800 is probably coming in February, not too long to wait. But I don't think it's going to be very fast or good in low light.
 
yea, but it's starting to seem like it's more a new camera than a replacement for the D700.

It's like a repro camera. 36MP is crazy.
 
god damn it, NR posted a test shot at 12,800 iso but I can't get to the page, someone check it out and say how it is.
 
opinions on the uncompressed video? that means you can pipe video out of it like other cameras (F3, FS100, AF100) through a monitor and into an external camcorder to not bother with the H.264 right?
 
everyone else is saying it doesn't work for them either. the link was on nikon rumors' facebook page.
 
Agreed, this feature alone is one of the highlights to me, I would love to be able to switch between FF and cropped without using a different camera.
 
I believe that Nikon thought they had too much market overlap. The new D800 isn't aimed a D700 users, it's aimed at D3X users. Nikon was losing sales on the D3 because the D700 had the same sensor. I think they hope to make people who want something with a lower MP count buy the D4. Another possibility is that they release 2 new FF models, one with high mp and one with low mp. Or they keep the ISO performance of the D700 along with it's burst rate and just use updated technology to allow 36mp with no loss in ISO performance or speed.
 
Looks awesome for photo; don't know who would by it solely for video though, considering it's $1000 more than an fs100 body
 
Yeah that makes sense. I'd like to see them release 2 new full frames

Yeah this definitely isn't something someone would buy solely for video.

I know a few professional photographers who have started doing video on the side for weddings and other events since the introduction of the 5d mark II. So a camera like this or new canon 1dx works perfectly for them as they only have to deal with one camera to get the job done. I'm just hoping these new video advances in the D4 are eventually incorporated into lower end bodies.
 
Haha well yes definitely! I've been really happy with my little D7000. Sometimes I have some backfocusing issues but those can be fine tuned.
 
That 12800 is fuckin' AMAZING. I want to see some samples from the Canon 1DX to see how they compare. The difference between a crop and FF body with about the same mp count in terms of noise performance is really interesting. Bigger pixels in the D4 compared to your D7000 probably make most of the difference.

Also, how has nobody mentioned the AF at f8 yet? I think that's going to be a selling point for a lot of people.
 
The video quality on the D4 is astounding... wow.

That was all shot on a D4. Hopefully we will see Nikon incorporate video into some lower end cameras too; even though the image in that video is solid, an FS100 for $1k less would still outperform a D4
