stupid question. i've got a d5000 and i'm looking at getting a good lense for shooting skiing. it will be my first lense purchase outside of what came wiht it (AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR)

i'm basically looking for the cheapest lens i can get thats good for shooting skiing. and yes, i know that i should get a quality lense and it will last me a lifetime, but i dont have that kind of loot. i was looking at the high-powered zoom AF-S DX Zoom 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED. anyone used this or have any advice for me?

the 55-200 is basically the same quality as the lens you have already. it will open up what you can do at a cheap price also one of the easiest lenses to sell later so you can upgrade again later.you could almost sell your 18-55 for about $130 and get the 18-200 for 600$ and have a way better quality lens and more focal length to play around with, still somewhat more expensive lens.
Just a thought, Good luck!

are you talking about the IF-ED or the ED VR II? I like your thinking. I'm planning on getting something for general photography eventually too so I wouldnt really need my 18-55 if i had an 18-200 and a nice wide angle. do you know if either of those are compatible with the d5000?

the IF-ED version is the one to go with the other version basically just adds the VR II and no one really needs it, it will work on your d5000 because it has teh AF-S motor and internal focus stuff.
idk what wide angles that would work that are cheap, i use the nikon 17-35mm and used to use the Sigma 17-35mm which was pretty sick but is discontinued now

If your talking about the 18-200, the VR and VR-II are actually really similar... The VR system is the same in both. The only difference is that the VR-II version has a focus lock switch. I'd try to get a used VR version (not VR II unless you need the focus lock...). That will cover wide angle and telephoto. I have the lens and use it for days i just wanna walk around and not switch lenses. It does lack quality though. Not super sharp and only f/5.6 @ 200, but for your budget it is definitely a good candidate. If you wanna go wider, the tokina 11-16 and tokina 12-24 are pretty nice lenses.
