Nike to make skis?

I was at the SIA trade show about two weeks ago and I stopped by the nike booth. They had sketches for prototype skis that they are planning to release in the 08'-09' season. they looked so sick. They had sidewall construction and some sort of experimental non-crackable metal for the edges. i am of course 100% for the production of a product like this. What are your thoughts on the issue.

damn nike...they want to make everything - is there a sport they are not involved in??

1. Thats bullshit, nike making skis? Jesus you've got to be kidding, how stupid do you think we are?

2. Uncrackable edges? Sorry bro thats fucking impossible.

Good try, some might believe you, seeing how 75% of this site is shit heads.

its obviously a extremely flexible yet rigid metal that you dont know anything about. I saw the stuff with my own to eyes and they looked amazing. there are all sorts of amazing scientific breakthroughs everyday.

that's pretty not true...however, world industries is making twin tips. I thought that was worth a chuckle.

Dude, metal breaks. Unless the edges are an inch thick, they will still crack. And got pics? I won't believe it until i see it, period.

yo im new to this site, but i have heard of this from some nike execs. i think this will be happening in the near future...

well if nike did make skis, i think it would be good for the ski community, put more money in the sport, then mayby we could start seeing more comps on tv, and/or more recent news in our magizines(which cover news from last year)!

Ha ok, lets use some malleable metals and charge 1000 bucks for some park skis. And also, ignorance is bliss.

They do make lacrosse specific cleats though so I think that counts but I don't see them too involved in the polo scene.

Nike's been making ski gear for years and supplied it in Europe / South America. I'm honestly surprised they haven't made boots / skis yet...seems like a logical step for em.

fuck nike, keep your money with the companies that were started by skiers for skiers. nike are clearly just looking for another way to control yet another sport. i dont know bout the rest of you but i enjoy the fact that skiing isnt overly commercial, if nike come into the sport, eventually sponsor contracts will be pushed so hard that people will be skiing solely for the money.

skiing has its own sub-culture and i hope it stays that way

Diamond would just shatter when impacted by Ti. Diamond is hard which means you can't scratch it but it is very brittle so it shatters. Hardness is not the quality you look for when trying to prevent cracks. You need something that is flexible and malleable to prevent it from cracking.

nike cant make skis then skiing will become some thing that tools do and everyone whos a poser will be rockin nikes

Nike can go two ways with this. They can go the golf way and make really nice equipment or go the hockey way and make shitty stuff. (At least all my friends tell my their hockey stuff is shitty. I've never played hockey) If they can match the quality of their golf balls and clubs I would consider buying them for sure.

EVERYONE WHO IS SEEN WEARING NIKES WILL BE QUICKLY WRITTEN OFF AS A FUCKING POSER. whatever sport nike gets into, i dont care who you are or HOW GOOD YOU ARE. If you are rocking nike shit, you arent welcome in any sect or community that respects its roots and fundamental values.

Fuck that, i hope they dont bother.

If they do they will try to monopolise the market by selling quality skis for cheaper prices undercutting all the smaller makes pushing them out of skiing and stopping other brands from cracking the market, once nike, adidas and all the other massive comanies enter the ski market skiing will come like any other sport, we like it being a 'minority sport' dont we.

I think that it will be the single biggest shame for the sport if they do go ahead in a serious way, anyway will people want to ski on nike skis, i dont think so, i definately wont.

Nike skis....CRAP/SHIT/CONGLOMERATE CRAP

Anyone into Nike skis shoes tennis rackets lax cleats etc etc etc etc is a poseur and should be shot. Nike sucks and anyone who says different sucks too. I'm sick n tired of corporations running what was once a peaceful live and let live show. There was a thread awhile back about some ski patrollers yelling at a skier b/c he was skiing down the slope switch....WHAT THE F***N IS THAT ALL ABOUT??????? I'll tell you-they're worried their stupid insurance premium will rise sending their stocks to the tank and having their stupid shareholders upset! I say fuck Nike, fuck Vail Resorts, Fuck Intrawest and any other congammer bastards who prefer cash to a quality lifestyle....so there.

booth at SIA = trying to sell the idea, so obviously they're going to talk up their product (IE unbreakable edges). They may very well have the idea they want to make, but in now way does that mean they can or will use that design for skis.

As for non breakable edges, it's completely possible to make a better edge then what we have today. In fact, I'm somewhat surprised that given our sect of the sport and how often edges crack that no companies have gone out of their way to do much in the way of changing edges to be what we need to to be, which is less brittle, yet still hard.

why would nike make skis??? they already make enough money in all their other departments. they should just let ski companies do their thing and nike do their's. no reason for them to get into the ski making industry.

i would never give my money to a company like nike... would my skis be massed produced in sweatshops too like everything else they make? its a joke that they even started making skateboard shoes... gimmie a break, nike has no place in alternative sports... kinda contradicts the whole idea and lifestyle that surrounds such activities...

i agree. the point of freestyle skiing is to be creative and whatever you do you do it for the love of the sport not makin another 20 million dollars just so you can say that you now have another department of nike.

I doubt Sammy would drop Salomon for Nike Skis...

But of course Nike has a lot of money behind them... but I still doubt it.
