Night Photography Question

Im new to this photography thing so....I want to take some pictures of the stars and moon while over looking the lake at night and there is just moon light. I tried it last night with a shutter speed of 15 sec and my appiture at 5.6, but got just basically darkness. What settings would be ideal for this situation.I dont know if it matters at all, but im shooting with film, not digital.

best way to learn is really trial and error.

most night shots I try to do a couple different shutter speed to see if anything else different comes up in the print.

I usually would rather overexpose a shot then underexpose as at least you can see and guage better.

A lot of times with Moon type shots the exposures can be like 15 minutes or so. 15 seconds wouldn't capture to much unless it was a full moon or something.

I threw in some photos to give you an idea of the shutter speed.

They look blue because I'm retarded and scanned them in as color, not B&W. So just pertend they don't look like shit....

Seriously, though, the best way is to just take more and more pictures. Lots of film. Some camera will take picutres slightly different and that will change depending on what film you used as well.

Have fun!

That last picture is a Self Portrait. Probably one of my favorate pics. It looks sicker not scanned, on photo paper, and bigger. I believe it is about 14x11 in real life.

Camera set on a tripod. The lights are actually headlights from my car.

The ground was snowy, which give it all the texture, and it was snowing while the shot was taken, so I knew it would give the light texture as well.

Just mark a spot for me to stand.

I wanted the lights to merge together and not be two seperate headlights, so I exposed it for a little longer than I though I needed.

All I had to do was then hit the shutter and walk over and stand until the shot was done.

It was filter in the darkroom, probably with a 3-3.5 filter.

sweet, I was just wondering how you got the car lights to shine through you and howcome your legs were transparent. I get the headlights, but im still a little baffeled by the transparent legs.

the light wasn't as direct at the camera at the level of my legs and head.

The headlight were directly at the camera level, so the parts higher and lower didn't get as much light

Definatley all trial and error. Just get a feel for it more. Don't worry about wasting film.

what you really have to do is try to create multiple images in the darkroom.

That is always fun.

This one sucks ass, but it is the only one I have currently scanned.

there is 4 different negatives used in this photo.....

another thing about the photo above - moving snow usually creates really cool textures. Just make sure to protect your camera. Best way to you just get a plastic bag, like a zip lock, and rip open a hole for the lens and do everything inside the bag.

That last picture is cool. The rocks look all smooth yet the snow or whatever makes it kinda noisey. I dont know haha...It's cool
