NHL Off-season Thread

The Leafs are hardly an example of a good management. Canucks just picked up Wellwood, I wouldn't mind seeing Tucker in Vancouver at a reasonable price since he fills the gaps... Canucks are in desperate need of size/grit. I'd personally like to see Ryan Malone here too. We've got a new GM so I have no idea what he's capable of. I hope he pulls something off.

Rangers off season is going to be very interesting.

Rangers have talked with Brian Campbell and Mats Sundin. I'd love Campbell but not sure about Sundin.

The only reason McCabe isn't gone is because he has a no movement clause. Tampa is still going nowhere fast unless they get a goalie and some defence. I can really see this being a really boring off season, doesn't seem to be many logical trades lurking around.

Wellwood is a good addition, as Morrison is probably gone. Word is that Pavol Demitra is almost a done deal to sign with Vancouver, and Gillis is actively pursuing Michael Nylander as well. I'd like to see them take a flyer on Jozef Stumpel, who was just put on waivers by the Panthers, but I don't know what his salary is. Imagine these 3 lines:

Naslund Nylander Demitra

Sedin Sedin Stumpel

Wellwood Kesler Pettinger

Definitely a step up from last year, if he can get it done.

I'd love to see

Demitra - Nylander - Hossa

Sedin - Sedin - Malone

but the cap hit would be through the roof. Maybe Cole/Williams instead of Malone, from Carolina

For the prices malone and hossa will fetch on the open market I wouldn't want them. Especially Malone, who is apparently very, very overvalued right now. Getting Cole and losing Morrison (who I think will sign for more money than we can afford to pay him) sounds like losing one semi-injury-risk (former iron man who had a year of mishaps) for a surefire injury risk (Cole's injury was really bad, and may have long-term effects). I like Cole but we take enough chances on players as it is.

Williams is a 3rd liner at best, and we've got plenty of them.

It looks like Nazzy's coming back regardless of what we think. I'd sign him at 2.5-3 mil, but if Gillis pays more than 4, he's making a mistake. Still, 19 is helping him recruit free agents, giving them tours of the city and whatnot, so he has that going for him.

I just want to rant. I hate basketball, period.

This sport gets way too much airtime and news than it should have to deserve. It's only popular because it's cheap and it's an everyday accessible thing, kinda similar to soccer but soccer is actually entertaining. Even soccer in the US is not that huge (I dont blame them though but to actually think basketball is a lot more popular and more widely accepted than soccer is sickening.) Meanwhile amazing sports like hockey get thrown under the rug for some unknown reason. Basketball is heavily diluted now, everything looks the same and dunks are the same now because it's too easy to score due to many whistles for free throws and you're not really allowed to get physical at all. Who can forget my favorite part of the last minute of an important game lasting 2 hours because of timeouts, whistles, and free throws. That's really awesome.

I would be shocked to see Naslund return to Vancouver he said he really doesn't care about the money and he wants to be with people he knows/ likes and with a coach who has a more offensive system. He also sold his house in Vancouver so...

I think Nylander is a bad idea he's way too old to be a first line center.

Apparently Jay Bouwmeester wants out of Florida. Can you blame him? He's played 4 years on a team that has traded away Luongo and Jokinen for grand total of 3 defensemen: Bryan Allen, Ballard, and Boynton. The organization seems to trade away every decent player they get their hands on. Hell, a team could probably get Bouwmeester for a 3rd rounder.

The Panthers have given him little reason to stay in Florida...

FLA also got Shawn Matthias out of the Luongo deal, which means it isn't quite as bad as it looked at first (unless you're a Detroit fan). Bouwmeester would fetch 5 mil / season on the market, and would be worth it, to the right team (say MTL or EDM).

yea im well aware of that but seeing that most of you in here have been canucks so far, you don't really realize how good you got it up there. You have TSN reporting hockey news 24/7. We don't have shit in the states, except for NHL Network but that's not easily accessable. ESPN down here hates hockey, they keep reporting basketball news 24/7.

Jaromir Jagr is believed to have met with Avangard Omsk GM Anatoly Bardin in the Czech Republic over the past day or two, with a sweetened deal now on the table that is probably worth more than the equivalent of 11 million after-tax dollars in the U.S.

If this is true, I don't see any reason why he would even stay for a year or 2 in the NHL. Don't get me wrong, the man's a legend but I'd rather let him go and free up some money for other players. The Jagr era is over and we need to start relying on our drafts and younger players. Rangers future is looking awesome with Staal, Dubinsky, Korpikoski, Anisimov, and then eventually Cherepanov.

stumpel is old now and doesnt produce like a first or second liner needs to anymore. Thats why hes gone. A young team looking for a veteran 3rd liner should pick him up though and they could get him for probably less than a million after being bought out and still being owed money by florida

Oh my. Apparently talks between Brian Rolston and the Wild have stopped short... He's a perfect fit for the sedins, Gillis should press hard for him. He was in Minny last year for 2.5m, I'd be happy paying more seeing as he was good for 31 goals last year...

Scott Niedemeyer is returning the Ducks, meaning they still have Cory Perry to resign, among others, and their cap hit is already at 51m.

There;s so many speculation and talks about different players for free agency this year it's so entertaining to see it unfold actually.

NHL Salary Cap has been set at $56.7 million. Quite a bump from last year. This is good news for all teams with deep pockets. Hoepfuly Francesco gives Gilles the full limit of the Cap.

Bert's been placed on waivers. For 50/60 points, potentially, I'd take him once he gets bought out by the Ducks. Bring Nazzy back for cheap, suddenly we've got less holes to fill.

Sedin - Sedin - Demitra?

Naslund - Nylander? - Bertuzzi

Not many RW's on the FA right now, especially of Bert's caliber at his price. Media would rip him a new one for sure though.

Are you kidding? Isn't Bertuzzi being paid upwards of 4 million? I wouldn't want the guy. He hasn't had one useful season since he came back from the suspension. We traded him already, let's not do this again.

Jozef Stumpel may be old, but he can still dish just as well as he always has. I'd take Rolston at 3, no more, even though poaching Wild players sounds like an excellent plan in general. Corey Perry should fetch 5-6 and get a multi-year, and I don't think we can afford it.

if bertuzzi gets bought out you guys at vancouver could probably have him for $2 milion, maybe less providing naslund comes back.

you guys have 20 million cap space right? i'd take hossa at 8 OR rolston at 3.5, bertuzzi 2, naslund 3, and a center (mo? nylander?) for 3 million, and 5 million should be plenty to finish up the roster, since you guys have sound defence and goalkeeping. wce might take a paycut providing they get to reunite

the canucks management right now is completely different from the one that traded him - you guys have a new GM, a new coach, a bunch of new players. if you guys get bertuzzi back then you guys really fucked florida over in that trade - nonis was a smart man. maybe even get auld back at 600k, you guys need a backup right?

who else is out there on the market? you guys need a big right winger... malone's going to get 5mil, i doubt vancouver will get him. betruzzi was good for 40 points in 68 games or something, guys who got that are going for $4+ mil, if you guys can get him for $2 or 3 mil then its a bargain on your part. you guys shoud give him a chance

Nope. Montreal is the only team with the rights to speak with Sundin. That's a rumor. But NY is surely interested in Sundin.

Is the Lecavalier deal official? They can't make it official before july 1st.

Here are the UFA's I'd be interested in and what I think they're worth. I'd really like to take a shot at Miro Satan, but who knows if he even wants to play on the west coast. Petr Cajanek and Mike York might be steals.

Mike Peca: 34. Last year 1.3, worth 1.

Bobby Holik: 37. Last year 4.25, worth 1.5.

Bret Hedican: 37. Last year 2.4, worth 1.5.

Kristian Huselius: 29. Last year 1.4, worth 2 maybe.

Daymond Langkow: 31. Last year 2.4, worth 2.5 at least.

Jason Williams: 27. Last year 1.6, worth 2.

Forsberg... who knows. If he'd be willing to come to Vantown, maybe he'd take a selanne-kariya deal if we resign Naslund. Or if we somehow land...

Joe Sakic: 38. Last year 6.75 worth... ok nevermind, it'll never happen.

JM liles: 27. Last year 1.4, worth 3.

Ladislav Nagy: 29. Last year 3.7, worth 4.5.

Oleg Tverdovsky: 32. Last year 2.5, worth 2.

Pavol Demitra: 33. Last year 4.5, worth 4.5.

Brian Rolston: 35. Last year 2.5, worth 2.5.

Michael Ryder: 28. Last year 2.9, worth 3.5 - 4.

Miro Satan: 33. Last year 4.5, worth 3.5 - 4.

Paul Mara: 28. Last year 3, worth 3.

Vaclav Prospal: 33. Last year 1.9, worth 1.5.

Mike York: 30. Last year 1, worth 1-1.5.

Petr Cajanek: 32. Last year 2, worth 1.5.

Sergei Fedorov: 38. Last year 6, worth 2.

Matt Cooke: 29. Last year 1.5, worth 1.5.

Brendan Morrison: 32. Last year 3.2, worth 2.5-3.

Markus Naslund: 34. Last year 6, worth 3.

Yes. 9 years, 77 million, he makes 8.5 next season. Great signinig for the bolts if you ask me, he is legitimately one of the top 5 players in the league.

Well, nothing on NHL.com and on Tampabay's official site. I heard rumors of that deal but haven't seen anything on tsn and rds. The deal will probably happen but it still isn't official.

I still think we should at least consider Bertuzzi because we're an offensively starved team. He's a RW power forward, which is exactly what the Canucks need and, as mentioned above, can be signed for cheap once he clears waivers ($2-3M?). However, he's a bad attitude in the changing room and a lot of bad history in Vancouver...

Whichever team gets him is getting both a bargain and a bad attitude.

You're kidding me... you think Ryder is worth up to $4 mil?

I agree, he'll probably bounce back after he leaves Montreal, but I find it hard to believe he would get more than 3(unless it were a 1-year deal... but even then he's being overpaid.)

Dude. It's official. I promise. It was on TSN 2 days ago. They had charts of his earnings and everything. He is signed. It's not a rumor.

Flames just signed Langkow and Conroy, so they're off the market.

If it's a one year he'll get less, maybe 2.5 to 3. I'd lock the guy up though for 3 years or so, he's a solid 2nd liner at 28.

"The annual salary cap hit to the Lightning will be about $8.55 million for the length of the contract, but the final year of the contract is said to be only for about $3 million, which means that if Lecavalier retired after eight seasons, his average salary would be as much as $9.4 million."

Conspiracy theory arises at CDC... I'll just copy and paste it

"Has our owner planned and engaged a grand scheme? Our long time captain possible sidekick?

This has been broken down a bit in pieces, but I'm not sure if anyone has addressed Francesco Aquilini's role in it.

I suggest that this Hossa-Demitra package with Naslund coming in for real cheap may have been a plan brewing in the works for a long time. I suggest Naslund and Aquilini had discussions when Luongo showed up and it became clear the offense was going to be pop gun for a few years.

I think Aqulini identifed Hossa more than 12 months ago as a player that would be available. I suggest Gillis and Naslund and Demitra had spoken about this during the past offseason. I suggest that Gillis, a player agent becoming GM, which is odd, who is the agent of the Captain, which is odd, who is also the agent of Demitra, who everyone knows wants to go where Hossa goes, was simply a pawn put in place by Francesco as the man to get him his top line in time to save Luongo's future in Vancouver.

I suggest that Naslund selling his house was a rumor to offset the Demitra and Naslund checking out Vancouver rumors, which brought unwanted attention to the new front office.

I suggest that Naslund will resign a few days after Hossa and Demitra sign. If these moves happen I think it was Aquilini from the start.

The only problem as I see it is:

Hossa had a dynamite playoff, thus increasing his value on the open market. Thus making it difficult to believe that the Canucks will get him.

The fact that the Salary cap went up is a boon because maybe Gillis can still afford him. I wonder if he would get the max.

What is the consensus as we close in on July 1st. Has Aquilini orchestrated a shady chain of events?"

Just something to think about (Canucks fans). Personally I feel he's given Aquilini too much credit. As much as I'd like to believe that our owner is really a mastermind... well, I just don't.

I read a few pages that said Rangers got permission from Toronto but can't seem to find anything other than blogs.

Does anyone know anything about the Rangers vs. Bettman/NHL now? Bettman is asking court to either fine/remove owners/ and/or remove the Rangers from the league. How can that bumblefuck announce the latter part publicly? NY is one of the original six team and in the biggest media market/fanbase.

Impeach Bettman, it's been a long time int he coming now.

i disagree.

naslund - demitra - hossa

sedin - sedin - ???

canucks have plenty of 3/4th liners, sound defense, good goalie. all they need is a one-two punch top-6 and they are cup contenders again. demitra and hossa are fellow countrymen and good friends, they already have chemistry.

Hossa and Demitra will likely want long term contracts. I don't want to see Vancouver commit, because we have a lot of homegrown talent coming up through the franchise.

You're ignoring the fact that in one or two years time, we could have a homegrown top-6 line. Raymond, Hodgson and Grabner. These guys are all young and fast. An insanely fast playmaker and scorer on the left wing. A future star and franchise centre in the making. A pure goal scoring talent on right wing. These guys need one more season of condition, max, before they're for sure ready to take on the role as one of our top two lines.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be making pitches for high end free agents, because I'd like at least one of Hossa, Campbell and Ryder come here, especially Ryder to play along side the sedins. But if any of the 'conspiracy theory' I posted above is true, we're on the verge right now of signing our entire top six for the next half decade and, while they certainly aren't 100% guaranteed to blow our minds, no one has yet mentioned how they plan on including this homegrown offensive line into our roster.

The Sedins will undoubtedly be offered a raise come July 1st. This locks them up for the next 4/5 years. Hossa wants 5 years and Demitra will want 2 or 3. But I'd much rather sign Ryder, especially if the Sedins are locked in for good. If all this happens, we have a full top-six locked in for the next half-decade. The problem is, our homegrown talent will be ready to step up after a year or two at the most.

Do you really want to lock our offense down with Demitra, Hossa, Malone, etc? We don't actually have 20 million to spend, because come next year we will need cap room to re-sign Edler, who will be commanding 3-4 million, give the Sedins a raise, and space to sign Raymond and Grabner when the time comes. Hodgson is going to be a star on this team and you can't not include him in your plans for this team.

People need to be a lot more considerate about what's happening right now and how it will affect our roster in the next handful of years. Face it, our offense is nowhere near that of a cup contender yet, and a huge UFA splash won't fix that. A big name UFA can make a difference if he's integrated into a team with good chemistry already, but we don't even have that. All we have are the Sedins.

I'd like to see Ryder and Campbell in our lineup... I'm happy waiting for our homegrown talent to take us to the Finals in 2010.

Canucks UFA targets, per TSN

Gillis is very interested in Malone (he's gonna be overpaid)

Demitra's pretty much been a given since his tour around Vancouver... looks like an open net to sign him

Morrison's supposedly done here... Columbus are interested in him

Hossa's kicking the tires, as expected

http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip63387#clip63387

Apparently the Sedins are asking 5.5 each

"Those two can't score for shit"?

You try scoring with Pyatt as your linemate. What the Canucks have yet to find is a linemate for the Sedins... hopefully that won't be the case by the end of this off-season.

"Overpaid by a mile"

That was the first thought that came into my head. Take a look around the NHL. If Danny Briere got 10 million for scoring 72 points then suddenly Henrik and Daniel at 70+ points each for 5.5 mil isn't looking so bad. Again, they need a linemate. If Malone can fetch 5+ million on the open market then imagine the value of the twins.

The way I see it, they're a bargain a 5.5 million each. Alongside the right teammate, they are potential 90 point scorers. I'd be equally happy keeping them as I would trading them, because you could trade for a damn good top line with the Sedins.

It all comes down to who we want to build our team around. Do we want to build around Luongo, Kesler, Edler, and the Sedins? Or trade them and build around a different top line?

On a separate note, Ruutu's testing the free agency. I would be so happy to see Ruutu back with Vancouver. His tremendous work ethic would make him a Vigneault favourite right away so he'd get a lot more icetime than he ever got during Crawford's era. Ruutu seems even more confident than he was when it comes to trash talking. He has pissed off everyone in the Eastern Conference for the past few years so now it's time for the Western Conference to feel his wrath again. Get rid of Cowan or Pettinger. Ruutu's actually got some talent behind that silly grin of his.

This is exactly why they're not worth 5 million. They're worth exactly what we're paying them; 4 at most. Until you do something in the postseason, you aren't an upper-echelon player.

Sundin in Montreal anyone? I don't want him to come, keep the cash for the young peeps (Kostityn, etc.)

At 37 Sundin has still a lot to offer. He had 77 points in a team that was absolute shit so with line mates like tanguay or kovalev he would be an excellent addition for the canadiens. We need big talented centers like him.

Malone signs a 7 year, 31.5 million deal. 7 and 8 million in the first and second year of that contract

crazy ass owners

Malone is seriously over-valued right now. He's going to be greatly missed here in Pittsburgh. But he is definitely not worth 4.5 million (average) per year. I'd personally value him around 3 mil. He's a tough role player that can score goals, but his stats are a little skewed because i think he just had an outstanding year and playoff run. Not to mention he had the hart trophy runner up, and another solid winger as his supporting cast. In Penguins history I would compare Malone to Warren Young and Robert Lang. All 3 players had great seasons in the last year of their contracts and went to other teams that gave them big contracts and they under-produced.

But obviously tampa made a nice deal, by giving him a bunch of money up front. So when the time comes for Stamkos' big contract, they'll be paying malone pennies. Tampa is going to be a force in the southeast. The only problem that have right now, is they are lacking a goalie. And maybe now that theres a little competition, one team won't lock up the #3 playoff spot just for beating up on other shit teams.

I still haven't lost hope of resigning Hossa yet either. 7 million to play on a major stanley cup contending team, and to be the winger of the best playmaker in hockey right now really isn't a bad deal in my opinion. Because lets face it. There really isn't a team out there thats gonna give hossa more than about 8.5 million. And if hossa is looking to play on a good team, there are even fewer organizations that meet those requirements. I can guarantee hossa would have a spot in the hall of fame, finishing crosby plays for the rest of his career.
