Thrashers are going to be top 5 eastern Conference and will win the SE division

The lineup of kovalchuk, hossa, Rucchin, kozlov, slater, Alex Bourret, Vitaly Vishnevski,Havelid,Devries, and Kari lehtonen is unstoppable

Anaheim will win the West, Detroit wont make the playoffs, St.Louis will

let me get this straight. the best team in the nhl last year wont make the playoffs, while the worst team will?

saying detroit wont make the playoffs next year is like saying the sun wont set tonight.

shanahan is gone, yzerman retired, datsyuk and zetterberg arent good enough to carry the team alone, the rest of the team is so old that they will be injury prone and they have no proven youngsters, hasek is too old to be good, legacy is gone, they are a mediocre team

Are you kidding me? Shanahan hasn't done shit for about 5 years. Yzerman is just there for his name, they have so many young, fast players.

Oh by the way, nobody is better than Ovechkin right now.

agreed. Ovechkin is just so fast and he kills it so much! He's a great guy that loves to play the game too.

Ovechkin...

Goals- 52

Assists- 54

Ranked 3rd in the NHL his rookie year...

Kovalchuck

Goals- 52

Assists- 46

Ranked 8th in his best of four seasons...

ovechkin has those higher stats because he plays so much more than kovalchuk, the capitals just have him for their scoring, the thrashers dont have to rely on kovalchuk to carry the whole team, and can count on hossa, kozlov etc to score as well..

dude...you can't say that Ovechkin isn't a great player, he's had one of the craziest rookie years ever!

Dude, watch Ovechkin play and watch Kovalchuck play. Kovalchuck needs other people to score goals, Ovechkin does it himself.

Kovalchuk is one of maybe 3 absolutely deadly players in this league. Not just scorers, guys who, every time they touch the puck, it looks like a goal is about to happen. Him, Jagr, and Sakic when he's healthy. Ovechkin could easily make that group soon.

Saying the Red Wings won't make the playoffs pretty much establishes you as a know-nothing fan from Georgia who likes to root for the home team and act like he knows about the game. You are so wrong I don't even know what to do with myself here. Detroit will win the central again barring some sort of miracle, and they will place, at worst, 6th, if Hasek gets hurt. Hell, they could make 6th spot with Osgood as a starter all year.

Atlanta will probably hit 7th or 8th spot. They aren't really any better than last year. Of course, Toronto absolutely won't allow their team to miss the playoffs twice in a row (and I hate the fucking leafs but if they have any degree of competence they can fix their team and git er done now that they have a goalie). So it won't be quite as easy to sneak in.

Teams that will make the playoffs this year that didn't last year: Vancouver (yay! Finally a goalie, too bad no first line to speak of though; but whatever, it's good enough for 7th or 8th), Toronto, Atlanta/Florida (race between those 2). Teams that did but won't: Edmonton (Barely made it last year, and now no Pronger... can they play playoff-level hockey for 82 games? Doubtful), Montreal (perennial on-the-brink team), Tampa(on a big downhill slide unless they fix serious holes).

yeah hockey

you know your sport sucks when it gets replaced for an entire year by POKER

hahahh hockey sucks!

Two things. One...make no mistake, Ovechkin IS among the elite of the elite. I don't know how he has yet to prove anything more...I'm a believer after his rookie campaign.

Two...Toronto still doesn't have goaltending.

i'm counting on florida and st louis to be significantly better than they were last season.

p.s, atlanta lost marc savard. that was a huuuuge loss. don't matter how much talent your wingers have if you gots nobody to centre them.

Yeah, agreed.

JD I am an AV's fan to the death and have followed them every step of the way, but Sakic is just getting too old. He's still a great player and a great leader, but he's not what he used to be.

Jagr definately had an insane season this year. He was one of the best players, then he sucked, now he's back to downright nasty.

I think you're leaving out Forsberg. Forsberg (when he's healthy) is basically one of the best players the game has/will see for a while. He has had a lot of injuries though, so he hasn't been able to prove much lately.

my uncle used to be pro and recently was gm of the bruins but now he works for LA kings. other than that i dont follow hockey too much thats all i can contribute

There's a difference between "best players" and "deadly players". Thornton is better than anyone on that list, but he's not the same kind of player. It's not that he or anyone else isn't GOOD enough, Ovechkin doesn't have anything else to prove. It's a player type. Datsuk has the same potential but isn't there yet.

you're right, Sakic is getting old, he might not have it anymore. A couple years ago, though, every time he took a wrist shot I thought it was going in. Naslund had it too, but last year he lost it completely.

Joel, at least Raycroft is a hell of a lot better than Tellqvist. He's not top 5 or probably even 10 but he's at least a middling starter.

it's hard to judge someone before they get rolling with a certain team aswell. thornton just wasn't gettin'r done with boston, and look what happened when he went to san jose. raycroft was an outstanding rookie if i remember correctly, but had a dreadful year. who knows what could happen in the future..

That's a misperception... Thornton was at about 1.5 ppg with Boston last year up until his trade. He upped it to ~2 after the trade, but he was by far Boston's best player before being traded in terms of production. I believe he was top 10 in scoring at that point in the season. So I wouldn't say he wasn't getting things done as a Bruin... he just got even better.

the only reason savard put up the points he did was because he was centering either Kovalchuk ,Hossa, Kozlov or Bondra at all times, the majority of his points came on the powerplay where he just set up ilya with assistsn and then cleaned up the garbage in front of the net...look at his stats pre Kovalchuk and post kovalchuk...next year in boston without anyone of the same caliber as kovalchuk or Hossa he will be back in the 50-60 pt range...Steve Rucchin who is alot more of a complete player and doesnt take stupid penalties will be more sufficient...and with vishnevski on the roster and lehtonen and hedberg minding the nets the thrashers are probably one of the top 10 defensive teams in the league

How many complete seasons has Rucchin played in his career?

... I'm actually going to check.

Answer: 2. 2 out of 11.

He's played 688 games. He's missed 214.

Steve Rucchin is a good player and a good 2nd line center. But he is not someone to pin your hopes on. That's like relying on a first line of Nolan, Lindros and Allison to carry your team.

if rucchin cant step up jimmy slater will do a great job, hes a faster skater than savard with all of savard's grit, savard was good for getting garbage goals , passing to kovalchuk or hossa, and getting dumb penalties

The thrashers are on par with carolina

See, saying things like that just makes it really obvious that you're just raving and don't really have any idea what's going on. Not even close. Hell, Staal is simply a better player than Kovalchuk, and they have plenty more besides him.

Yeah but... you're... wrong. About Staal anyway. Cole was a ppg player last season, which is what Hossa is, but I don't know if that was a fluke or what. Either way, though, Carolina is simply a better team. The Thrashers have a fair amount of talent but aren't built very well.

whatever the Thrashers will still make the playoffs and get to atleast the 2nd round, i think Stever Mccarthy is going to kill it and have a 40 pt season...which is entirely feasible, Lehtonen will be a candidate for the venzina and Steve Rucchin will have hte best season of his career, so will nico kapanen

The Cnaucks will be good. Theyre a fast small team and now that they have a goalie who is a top rated one they will win. Last season they had a good start until their goalie blew it.

There are reasons I can't get into certain sports, unless it's the playoffs.

The reason I can't get into basketball is that the points don't matter enough. "Oh, another layup. I guess they'll have to go the other way and respond then." March Madness is a different story, that shit's intense.

The reason I can't get into baseball is that it's too slow and there's very little real action. There's a lot of strategy and skill, but that's not really "sports" entertainment. Kind of like watching golf.

The reason I can't get into football... well, I can, a lot of football games are good, though it's sort of hit and miss... but the stoppages are too frequent. It's ten seconds of action and 60 seconds of talk.

Hockey, meanwhile... well, it's got the speed of basketball, the athleticism of soccer, the skill of baseball, the strength of football, and we play on a slippery surface. So you have to respect us.
