tonight was the match in london miami vs new york

I had never seen a match on tv before, so this was the first. i watched the whole thing and cannot understand why it is so popular in north america.

i understand that it is really tactical and some of the hits can be pretty big. BUT it is the slowest moving game ever, it has no flow, each play lasts ten seconds and then they meander about waiting for the next one. Also why the fuck are there so many people involved in it, ok there is a defensive team and an attacking team, but there were about 40 people who came out, people were being substituted after 1 minute having never touched the ball or done anything significant.

is it a game that is entirely tactical and you marvel at the coaches inguinuity, or am i completely missing a trick.

the main problem for me is it is so different to european sport and football and rugby is what i have grown up playing and loving.

any help???

Alright. Once you start watching more football and understanding the game, you will see why we love it so much in America. Football is the best sport in the world in my opinion, because it is the hardest hitting sport there is (rugby has no pads, because they don't hit head to head every play, however football is head to head each play) and the strongest, fastest, toughest, most agile people in the world play professional football. So basically, you have all these men with superhuman strength (Lineman benchpress on average 700 pounds) and speed going full force at eachother each play. Also, since it is not a flow game, the actual flow of the play is much more straight forward. I honestly would like to see rugby players put in pads on the gridiron and see how they do, and then put the best football players out on the rugby pitch and see how successful they are. I think that the football players would fare better because they hit harder, and they are faster. I would love to see Jonah Lomu come face to face with Brian Urlacher. Come out to America and strap up and play some football. That's the only way you will truly see what football is about and how much different and faster it is than rugby.

Also, the best offensive players for Miami were out (Trent Green, and Ronnie Brown) due to injury.

i kinda get your point, and i realise that miami really arent great

you cant compare rugby players to nfl players as nfl players have no endurance at all, their fitness, which i am sure is amazing is channelled into short bursts whereas rugby is more endurance based.

but do you guys love nfl becasue of the hits or the tactics, or the fact that they wear pads and aim for each others heads? bit sinical but that is where i am left now

The reason why i like football is that it evolves strategy. It's like a game of chess but you tackle people and run for touchdowns. They sub players sometimes because the player has the play and he tells the defense/offense the play or the player fits the role for the play better. Like if you were going to have a passing play would you rather have a 5 9 halfback help block or a 6'4 fullback? Thats part of the strategy.

Its true you can't really compare football to rugby, they are both geared to different aspects. Football is a mix of tactics, brute strength and finesse. Try to watch a touchdown pass between Tom Brady and Randy Moss. Watch kick returned for a TD from 90 yards out. Football maybe slow in some aspects but when you see one of those plays it really brings you right in to watch more. It's much more stop and go because of the fact that every single play your getting hit and it's tiring. I played for a little while and you REALLY need to be in great shape. While it seems that football players only work on short bursts of energy they really arn't. Watch a receiver run a route every play, if they arn't there blocking for a run. You have to watch it a few times until you pick up on the things you don't see when your new to a sport. For instance, I wouldn't really have a clue what is going on in a rugby game. All I would really see is some running, throwing, and hitting. I wouldn't be able to see what you would see because you know much more about the sport. I would see the bare minimum while you would see the exact science.

football is kind of like a battle with coaches being the generals. The offense tries to advance with a play and the defense tries to pick a play that will best defend against what they think the other team is doing.

The reason you see people leaving the field without even touching the ball is because very few players even touch the ball. Most of the players on the field are there to protect other players on the field like the quarterback, runningback, recievers. Its really hard to understand the game if you haven't grown up around it. Probably the best way to understand why we like it is to rent a football video game like Madden.
