I have a school report to do on newschool skiing as a grassroots movement. If anyone has any good info on how it all got started tell me or give me a link to a site thanks.

the NCAF were the first people to get media coverage with 'newschool' so got credit for 'creating' it.

it started with the young canadian mogul skiers like jp auclair, jf cusson and others that would go into the park during their free time and try to mimick the snowboarders and adapt their tricks to skiing

There is a fairly decent article pertaining to the origin of the 1080's in like the 3rd issue of Freeskier that might help you out.

 
you guys have no clue... for one its not 'newschool skiing' maybe for some of you it is... but for me its just skiing.

people have been grabbing for alot longer than you think... just because most of you saw Freeze and decided it was cool doesnt mean that that was the start of anything.

and it wasnt just JP JF and the crew to start things first.... although if you all want to buy into magazines then thats fine with me.

yea well dont read into it to much i was just saying that the NCAF was the first to get alot of attentino like mikehunt said and really got things started you cant argue against that they really set it off. And i know people were grabbing and doing stuff way before them

 
If you check out the royalty DVD it has a secert video call Free Bob that the phils made back in 1997. Belanger does rodeo 7's way back then. That is the same year State of Mind came out, where we meet the canadian airforce for the first time, and like other people are saying, they pretty much grabed the spot light. Right around that time, the midwest had it orriginal posse taking shape, Applegate and Schmies were at the front of that group, Applegate was doing d-spins before anyone knew what they were. He called it a honkey flip. See if you can track down a copy of Homegrown or Declaration, the Midwest All Stars two home made videos.

For a couple reasons,

First being that the first couple of US opens didn't alow inverted tricks. Second, I'm pretty sure he didn't even enter it. They didn't come into the light till a little later. 1999 I think.

 
It is pointless to argue who started a movement,just like skateboarding, Tony Alvaz was credited with the first air off a vertical ramp. There are so many unknowns that are out there doing things before everyone else, only a few people are lucky enough to get the attention and to become famous! It sucks it has to be that way, but that is life.

Jp won the first open with a 3 because inverts were not allowed. John Mercon threw a misty flip and got the big DQ.

Read the NCAF story in FREEZE. Read JPs Q&A in FREEZE. Check out RAP films - Carving the White - where Greg Tuffelmire (in Andrew Sheppard's segment, incidentaly) throws a 360 mute. That was filmed in 1996, I believe, at Breckenridge.

There is not a lot of good info on the whole topic, so the magazines are probably your only legit source.

I remember back in the day when Vinne Dorion was on the canadian development team, and people would talk about how he would do this amazing

720 UFO. that was the name for it back in like 96 all it was a 720 tucked up with a cross, done off a tabletop but at the time it was progressive as hell.

When i was like 10 i walked up to VInne cauze people told me he would be the next Jean Luc Brassard, so i was going to ask for his autograph

but when he stode up and i saw i was taller than him, I laughed and didn't ask for his signature, like a year or so later all the 'newSchool' shit blew up,

P.S. A lot of it started at the Ericision big are in tremblant in 98' that's where the Phil's were descovered, and when the shit got rollin.

although i'm sure there were many other groups all at the same time who were into the same things... most of you kids who talk shit on here to everyone are just new additions to skiing... so just sit back and learn rather than talk too much smack...

well he asked for how it got started.... and maybe applegate or whatever did it first but the NCAF really started it becaue they got all the popularity and everyone knew them so they were the ones that got it going not applegate is all im saying

 
i dont try to be rude or cocky... but when everyone treats me like an idiot i get a little defensive.... i have been around this sport for a long time... i dont like hearing a bunch of kids trying to tell me stuff they barely know about...

if you treat me with respect then i'll treat you with respect plain and simple... i dont start shit unless its called for.

so please keep it chill...I'm just saying that theres alot of things to learn about skiing that people dont know yet... and i dont want to hear people who have been skiing for two years contradict others all the time.

what up yo, don't be hating on the revolution. Just because you haven't heard about something doesn't mean it didn't influsnce where we are now. be in the mwas, ncaf or what about those slow guys out in cali. They were vital to the movement. Any of you have first volume of Freeze? who else but MWAS is in there, pushing the sport from the getgo. Rad photo of al inthe trunk of a car if i remember right.

 
Two words, one name. The Dragon, Ostness.

The first 'Stunt of the Month' was the mute grab. And there was an inset picture of a screamer grab. Also in the first issue - Kent Krietler grabbing off a cliff, Brad Holmes in the pipe, and McConkey doing a backey (not to mention Derek Heidt and the infamous Burton ad.)

The second issue ever had Dean Cummings on the cover, spinning a 3.

So don't say that no one got that kind of coverage before the NCAF. Also in that second issue of FREEZE were Loubek - 360 mute - and, once again, Ostness - nightime halfpipe on what are some early twin tips.

Oh, now we get to the third issue of FREEZE. Ostness, again, as a conmtender on k2 poachers. Andrew Shepard grabbing on the cover. And the first trick sequence in FREEZE! That would be Bryce Raney...on fruitboots.

And, appearing in the last issue that year, once again we have - drum roll, please - Kris Ostness.

 
Ironic that the company that produced the first mass marketed twin tip (salomon) now really cares so little about the sport they were so crucial in creating.

 
hmmm... maybe thats cause the 'revolutionary' company was actually just looking for a marketing gimmick... a trend to make money off of.... such as the kids of newschoolers.com, people with such names as 'PocketRocket' are simply free marketing for a company like this...

ok i hate to bud into this fun loving conversation but based on my information and for being a skier for 12 years in michigan this is whats up:

first person to ever do a d spin was alex applegate from wisconsin (mwas)...and schmies and his boys were right with him...they were the first to go to highnorth ski camp and continue to dominate it. they were throwing back 3s in the pipe back in 97...

Also for the people who try and name the person to do the first 3 grab......its impossible to track down the person who did it first and why waste the time. all that matters is cusson, douglas, auclair, dorion, and szocs were the first to make it big and invent many of the tricks people throw today.

Back in 93 I remember brad holmes, chris manders, and jimbo morgan coming to Nubs Nob, Michigan and were throwing 7s, 3 crosses and all that good stuff. Oh and wait, the first grab by a skier was definitely the rocket....shit..i was throwing that when i was 8 years old . In the midwest and canada was going off..during the whole 90s...that was the newschool scene!

Dude for sure. Pinstrip it was volume 2, I just checked it out. Salomon has been pissing me off lately, they never support the athletes aside from the high pros, don't show at events ever, reps are full of shit. Only thing salomon has going for them is Epps cause she is just sick (go huge flair first hit!! but be careful with that knee of yours). Everyone just realize that the NCAF didn't do much more then get with johnny and a few photographers. Smart move on there part, but there were guys at that same time going just as big or bigger then those boys. Might see them coming back into the scene someday.

Who ever called the 'its impossible to track down the first 360 mute grab ever' line was right on. To elaborate on that, and to drop a hint of insight to everyone arguing against it... here ya go: There could have been 2 people or 20,000 people who did mute 3's around relatively the same time period, but who the fuck cares ? where are they now ? Cusson claims to have done it first, and where is he now ? Slamming beers, fixing his ribs and still dropping the sickest segments every year.

Please step lightly around the NCAF subject, yeah yeah they're lucky to have hopped on with the right photogs and all that shit, but I know for a fact that they've each got more natural talent than dogs in heat (alot). Furthermore, they come out every year and drop progressively better segments. Kids are way too concerned about who is winning comps, granted there are some sick comp riders out there, and there is an even sicker new wave of skiers boiling to the top, but don't forget why the NCAF are where they are. They're fucking good.

for sure they are but in general everyone gives all the credit of the movement to them. They deserive alot of it but don't forget that there were boys our east, midwest, and west that were doing stuff at the same time.

 
if you haven't seen it already, track down a copy of State of Mind (deCesare's video realease the year before Degenerates), JF kills it pretty damn hard in that video, a couple of the shots would still hold their own today. Notably his Mute 3 at hood in front a ton of snowboard camper kids that all chear for him. what might be even more amazing is the fact that they bust out half pipes that most people wouldn't even waste their time with these days. Plus he talks some mad shit later in the show.

The other reason you should watch that video is to see the incredible progression of skiing in the short span of the five or six years its been happening.

 
yea, state of mind is such a good video to have in your collection. mine broke a few years ago though, i was so pissed off, i gotta buy it again sometime.

I remember the first time i saw that movie.. back in the spring of the year it came out... me and the posse watched it like 4 times in a row.. just to take it all in... we didnt know that anyone else grabbed their skis.

the hood section at the end is so epic.. everyone needs a copy of State of Mind in there collection

Not that I know anything about this topic..But I've seen videos of guys on wooden skis and leather bindings hucking 3's back in the 60's. Not sure if there were any grabs...but im sure they were doing at least safety's.

There was also midwest representation coming from the Mercon Brothers, Greg Tufflemeyer, Collin Otte etc. Those guys were all from the midwest and then moved to Summit County. Those guys have been around just as long as anyone else. You should look for a copy of John Mercon's movie 'One more stupid ass movie' its pretty funny and that was from way back in the day. They were doing mistys rodeos etc.

Couple of words from Europe...(I'm new on this forum but have been 'lurking' for a while)

I have a snowboarder friend (a really really good one, e.g. 2nd on verbier Xtreme 2001)who told about guys doing pretty progressive stuff on skis on the early 90's.

I guess great things just often happen to be 'invented' at the same time, in many places and by many people. It is the same with snowboarding, no one can say exactly who invented the idea, because there were many people who have the similar idea at the same time. This is very comparable to the 'new school' skiing also.

This boarder friend of mine tells that he had 'ordinary ski bum friends' in Chamonix that were doing rail slides on frozen logs, grabs (mostly rockets and mutes), and taking off fakie from cat tracks back in 1993-96. I myself heard one of these guys talkin about doing a swirch 540 off cat track back in -96..(I'm not sure if he ever did it though..:)

I know that those same guys (I'm talkin about) are nowadays more oriented to big mountain skiing, even mountaineering and (real) extreme skiing (hate the word, but you know really scary stuff like Aguille du Midi Nort Faces and such..) But still, the point is, I'm pretty sure that no one alone 'invented' anything but this all started by several individuals around the ski world that just started to play with new stuff and got fresh ideas from snowboarding..

OK, just my 2cents...really interesting discussion by the way!Keep it up!
