douglas helped create the first marketed twin tip for Salomon in the early 90's but people have been freestyle tricks and doing 360's even from the 1960's. not sure about the first switch landing though.

vinnie did the first 900 and i read somewhere that JF was the first skier to try a rail. i'm pretty sure vinnie also did the first switch 360. other than that, i have no idea.

pete proos was the first to do all the rail tricks, like 270 on, blindside switch up, switch up, all that shit.

i wonder who was the first person(ski or snowboard) to try grinding a rail. Cuz if u think about it thats really kinda stupid. Just to have random rails setup in the middle of the hill, let alone to try to ride over one.

I ski at the crappiest hill ever...

 
I believe it was around 91 at Snowsummit. Snowboarder of course. They had some old scrap and junk on the hill for whatever reason and some snowboarders jibbed it. SnowSummit would soon after put rails on the hill and other hills followed suit.

First rail ever done in any sport was on rollerblades back in the very old x-games, back to when there where only two sports and a 360 was the trick to do.

 
townseys so wrong. skateboarders where doing rails. then some guy on rollerblades made some adjustments to his skates so he could grind too.

 
^ Believe what you want but I've seen the video. He didn't make his first attempts at sliding the rail, because well, the rail wasn't there to be slid. The announcers where going crazy.

 
townsey, not to doubt you, but how the hell did he grind a rail without grind plates? unless his wheels were really far apart i don't think you could do it, and im sure they werent ready for royales and cess slides back then. also, skateboarders have been grinding pool curbs for a wicked long time, so id imagine they were the first to do rails, as a natural extension of that

check out the old bones brigade videos from the 80's with like cabalero, hawk, lance mountain, mike mcgill (invented the mctwist) those guys were sliding shit back in the mid eightys on their skateboards, it was def not started in the x games...that was prolly the first time an in-line skater did it

I first of all agree with Ace of spades. All these are unanswerable. However, I am willing to bet, that out of all the sports mentioned above, that a skier was the first to do a rail do to the fact that skiing has been around for that much longer. I'm sure that at some time, perhaps in 1927, some guy thought it might be fun to hit a piece of metal or even wood, that was made "hitable" due to an exceptional snow year.

Also, everything you said, minus the urban rail, and 360, cause that has always been done, I had done before I seen any pro do. May possibly have heard about it, but not seen it.
